What an amazing weekend! I had the pleasure of sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas for a 3 Night Bahamas Cruise. The Freedom of the Seas was built in 2006 and first debuted as the World’s Largest Cruise ship. It was the first in the Freedom class of ships. Since then Royal Caribbean has launched, the Oasis and Quantum class ships, and coming in 2024 another class with the Icon of the Seas.
If you’re looking for a quick cruise getaway, the Freedom of the Seas is a perfect option.
Here are My Top 5 Things I loved about the Freedom of the Seas.
#5 – THE NEWLY RENOVATED POOL DECK (Deck 11 & Deck 12)
In early 2020, the Freedom of the Seas underwent a $116 million dollar amplification that features a lineup of new thrills from bow to stern. The amplification wasn’t just a paint job and cosmetics but in my opinion, was more like a redo from HGTV.
Also new is the addition of new pool furniture and casitas and clam-shaped day beds that are located on the top level that overlooks the pool. Guests can make reservations for one of the casitas at the Lime & Coconut bar.
The pool area features a resort-style Caribbean pool deck, The colors really popped against the blue sky and white clouds, which made for a festive atmosphere. For the kids, there’s the Splashaway Bay aqua park.
No pool is complete without a signature poolside bar, The Lime & Coconut bar is one of the best addition again, in my opinion. The bar has adult-sized swings and features specialty drinks.
On the middle deck of the Lime & Coconut Bar is a second bar with additional seating. Past guests would remember this as the SkyBar. This is a great place to catch the sun and a breeze while sipping on your favorite beverage or watching a movie on the big screen. This would make an excellent location to watch the “Sail-a-way” party.
The Lime & Coconut bar completes the area with a rooftop deck. The rooftop area does not have a bar, but it offers great views, and a nice breeze, and is a cool spot for a group of friends to chill and relax, especially at night under the stars.
#4 – PLAYMAKERS SPORTS BAR AND ARCADE (Deck 4)
If you’re a sports fan, Playmaker’s Sports Bar and Arcade is a great place to hang out. Fans, family, and friends of all ages can have a seat at the table to catch live games on more than 100 TVs, then play a game of foosball and pool at one of the game tables.
Guests can also enjoy playing classic arcade games like Pac-man and Donkey Kong while consuming traditional bar food and ice-cold beers.
Located behind the bar in Playmakers is a private Owners Box area that is available for a private group with reservations to watch the games. It also features large-screen TVs, sofas, and chairs.

#3 – THE ICE SKATING SHOWS (Deck 3)
Royal Caribbean is known for its entertainment at sea and has won awards for the best entertainment for 2021 – 2022 by Travel Weekly Readers’ Choice Awards starting with their Ice Skating Shows.
Imagine sitting on a moving ship while watching some of the most talented ice skaters perform high-level flips, jumps, triple axles, and acrobatics with ease and little to no incidents.
The shows are absolutely amazing and the stellar production would easily rival anything you would find on land starting with the customs, choreography, music, lighting, and special effects.
During the day, the venue is open for the guest to “hit” the ice so be sure to bring long pants and long sleeves. It is also used for laser tag and movies.
All this is included with your cruise, so be sure to make time to see one of the outstanding ice shows while you’re onboard the Freedom of the Seas.
#2 – GIOVANNI’S ITALIAN KITCHEN (Deck 11)
Located on Deck 11 just outside of the Windjammer marketplace and opposite Chops Grille, is Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen. The menu features authentic Italian dishes and made-to-order pizzas that are baked in the in-house pizza oven, if you have 2 or more people within your party, I highly recommend Giovanni’sSM assorted meat and cheese platter and gigantic veal meatball all of which are shareable sizes.
I hadn’t enjoyed lasagne since I was a kid in school and even it was delicious. Just be sure not to fill up on bread, you’ll definitely want to try Mamma’s Tiramisu or the Chocolate Ravioli or for something lighter the Go Bananas for dessert.
The decor is what I would describe as modern Italian chic, with family-style dining in the front of the restaurant and smaller seating near the back. Both have amazing views of the ocean from the large floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
Typically, I’m not a fan of Italian cuisine, however, Giovanni’s was a game-changer. I’ve since visited Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen onboard the Odyssey of the Seas.
Although Giovanni’s is a specialty restaurant it is not included in your cruise fare, I highly recommend you try it for lunch or dinner during your cruise.
#1 – THE SCHOONER BAR (Deck 4)
The #1 place that I absolutely loved onboard the Freedom of the Seas and full disclosure I love this place on all Royal Caribbean ships is the Schooner Bar.
The bar is located on Deck 4 next to the casino. It has a nautical theme, with a warm woodsy interior. There’s a faux ship mast with ropes and canvas sails that resemble a wooden boat.
It’s a great place to relax and chill with a great cocktail while listening to piano music. If you’re looking for a spot to meet up with friends before dinner…The Schooner Bar is your go-to spot.
The bar is often the main place for trivia and games. When not in use it’s also a great place to read and/or people-watch.
The best time to visit the Schooner bar is late in the evening when the crowds start to gather, the drinks are pouring from the bar, the waiters are working the room making sure everyone has a drink in the hand, and the pianist is leading the crowds in sing-a-long songs.

KNOW YOUR TRAVEL NEEDS
What types of transportation will you be using? Airplane? Motor Coach? Train? Ship? Vans for ground transfers?
What do you use or wish you had when shopping, sightseeing, dining out or going to movies and concerts?
Can you hear and see clearly without special auditory equipment and/or visual aides?
How far can you walk without a rest break?
Are stairs difficult?
Can you get in and out of the bathtub or shower without hand grips or other assistance?
Are you renting a car? Some car rental companies have vehicles that are modified for drivers or passengers with mobility limitations.
PLAN AHEAD
If you own your own scooter or portable oxygen, Does your transportation have a way to store your scooter or wheelchair?
Is oxygen allowed on board your flight or cruise ship? Most cruise lines require oxygen to be delivered to the ship, and that you have enough for the entire voyage. Oxygen may NEVER be brought aboard in your luggage. While some airlines require at least a 48 hours notice to make special arrangements.
Confirm that an accessible hotel, resort or cruise ship stateroom is available for your travel dates. The earlier you book, the better your chances of securing fully accessible accommodations.
Are there TDD phone devices? Are there flashing lights to accommodate hearing?
Knowing in advance the scope of your needs gives you time to arrange advance rentals of any necessary equipment, scheduled to arrive when you do.
When traveling with a limitation or disability, Travel Insurance for medical coverage abroad and trip cancellation insurance are even more important and strongly recommended.
In simple terms, don’t take anything for granted. It’s easy to arrange for almost every situation, and the world is wonderfully accessible, once you know what’s needed, what’s available and how to find the necessary equipment.

I’m keeping my fingers, toes and eyes crossed in hopes of the cruise ships restarting in the U.S. soon. The CDC issued a “No Sail Order” on March 14th, 2020 at the start of the pandemic. The date has been adjusted a few times but is currently set to expire on September 30th just a few days away.
If the “No Sail Order” is lifted, cruising can began as soon as November. Whooo Hooo!
Last week we received promising news from an expert panel set up by Royal Caribban and Norwegian Cruise Lines who developed protocols for a safe and healthy return to cruising. The panel consisted of Scientists, Medical Experts, Health Authorities, key CLIA cruise members and other cruise giants like, Carnival Corporation and MSC’s Blue Ribbon Group.
The panel and cruise operators submitted a detailed 74 page report to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention on enhanced sanitation practices, controlled shore excursions and better protection for their crew and guests.
If approved, the ships can be up and running with the new protocols set in place within 30 days, which would be the end of October. By November they’ll be ready to raise anchors and sailing. The report focuses on six (6) pillars:
1. Testing , Screening and Exposure Reduction 2. Mandatory Face Mask in Public Spaces and designated areas* 3. Socical Distancing 4. Enhanced Sanitation and Ventilation 5. Response, Contingency Planning and Execution 6. Controlled Destination & Excursion Planning
The American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) and the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) are also calling for the restart of cruising in the U.S. Cruising has already resumed in parts of Europe with great success.
Since the shut down of the cruise ships, Florida has lost $3.2 billion in economic activity and 49,500 local jobs paying approxiamtely $2.3 billion in wages as a result of the suspension.
I am highly satisfied with the protocols the panel and cruise lines have submitted to the CDC. My bags and Face Mask are half packed and I’m ready to set sail.

*FYI…If you don’t like wearing a face mask, because you feel it takes away from your personal freedom. For the time being in order to restart cruising and travel, wearing a face mask will be neccessary.
Cruising is discretionary and not mandatory. Perhaps it would be best for you to travel in 2022 or 2023 as hopefully conditions will be much better.
I think most of you are like me. You’ve been watching the news and your Facebook feed and afterwhile you start to think “Is this how we all become zombies?” Too much negative information eventually starts to feed into the fears of traveling and especially cruising. Yes, your concerns are valid as I see the news with guests not being allowed disembarkation from the cruise ships as well.
I think as of yesterday, there were 300 cases of the coronavirus throughout the US with so far less than 20 deaths. While the news tends to focus on the 15-20 people who have unfortunately died there are 280-285 people who have survived after contracting the virus.
If you look at those numbers, the virus has a 90-95% survival rate and perhaps would be an even higher rate if there were no underlying health conditions.
As a travel professional, I would be remiss in not providing a different perspective that will hopefully ease your concerns. Being in the travel industry, I understand the heightened sensitivity regarding the coronavirus and my hope is that you will find this information beneficial as you plan your trip.
Before you step foot out your door there are things you can start doing now whether you’re going on vacation, going to work or out into the general public.
PREPARATION PRIOR TO AND DURING YOUR CRUISE*:
Drink lots of water! Water flushes toxins out your body and assists your immune system by staying hydrated!
Take the “Sunshine Vitamin” – Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps your immune system
Zincis another immune booster to treat the common cold and preventing and treating pneumonia.
Other great vitamins to take to boost your immune system are Vitamin C, Vitamin B6& Vitamin E
Exercise regularly. Physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways. This may reduce your chance of getting a cold, flu, or other illness.
Reduce your alcohol intake and smoking. Smoking & drinking can weaken your immune system. Enjoy your libations in moderation YOU ARE ON A CRUISE TO HAVE FUN! 😀
Carry a travel packet of Clorox wipes and a travel-size bottle of Lysol for your cabin and while in port. Clean counter surfaces, and seats prior to touching. Keep one for the room and in your purse or carrier when you’re visiting the islands.
Carry hand sanitizer and make sure it has an alcohol content of 60% or higher.
Follow CDC guidelines for additional everyday preventative measures:
Avoiding close contact with people who are sick.
Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. The CDC recommends 20 seconds.
*SPECIAL NOTE: Please check with your doctor to make sure vitamins do not interfere with any of your medications. And to make sure it is safe for you to travel if you have a compromised immune system or underlying health issues.
WHILE ONBOARD – SANITIZING YOUR CABIN:
Although your cabin steward will do a wonderful job of cleaning your stateroom. As an added precaution & for extra peace of mind take some Clorox wipes along with you:
Wipe down the doors and doorknobs in your cabin
Remote controls
TV power on/off buttons
Phones in the rooms
Bathroom countertops
The desk & chair and any area where you’ll lie your phones and other stuff on.
Light switch(s)
Closet doors
If you have a balcony cabin, the balcony doors, table, and chairs.
Spray Lysol or any disinfectant on your sofa and soft goods in your cabin.
THINGS ROYAL CARIBBEAN IS DOING TO KEEP YOU HEALTHY:
A temperature screening will be administered to ALL guests prior to boarding on embarkation day.
All terminal and ship access points are being thoroughly sanitized before and after all sailings.
In addition, high traffic areas onboard, including restrooms and public areas, are undergoing extensive cleaning each evening, over and above the normal procedures.
Daily announcements are being made to remind guests to wash their hands often, use recommended coughing etiquette, and report any illness symptoms immediately.
Likewise, additional medical staff has been added and are providing complimentary medical consultations during each sailing.
WHAT ABOUT ME…I’M NOT GOING ON A CRUISE I’M ONLY TAKING A FLIGHT:
Delta started using a fogging technique in February which is a highly effective EPA registered disinfectant on planes arriving in the US from Asia.
“Even if there is a virus in the inanimate environment, it’s not going to jump off the seat and bite you in the ankle,” says Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University’s division of infectious diseases.
“You’ve got to touch it, and then touch your nose or your mouth. So it’s those hands we have that are the important intermediary. And that’s where I would put the emphasis,” he said.
