Cruise family, today’s boarding call has everything: a cruise ship drifting away from the pier, Royal Caribbean passengers wondering where their carefully selected cabins went, Carnival bringing back a little old-school cruise nostalgia, and SpongeBob SquarePants heading to sea.
Yes. SpongeBob. On a cruise ship.
Welcome aboard another edition of Your Daily Boarding Call, where we unpack the latest cruise and travel headlines without charging you an overweight baggage fee—or asking why you packed a full-size microwave for a five-night cruise.
This is a safe space. We don’t judge. 😂

Scarlet Lady Breaks Free From the Dock in Rhodes

Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady had quite the overnight adventure while docked at the Port of Rhodes in Greece.
According to the episode, the ship stayed overnight in Rhodes because of bad weather and high winds near Mykonos, but strong waves and heavy swells caused several of Scarlet Lady’s mooring lines to snap.
Once those lines failed, the ship began moving away from the pier.
The gangway fell into the water, and Scarlet Lady drifted across the harbor, where it struck a catamaran and two other smaller boats.
Fortunately, the episode reported:
- No guest injuries
- No crew injuries
- No reported marine pollution
Scarlet Lady’s captain maneuvered the ship back into position under its own power. Tugboats were placed on standby but apparently were not needed.
The ship later continued its revised itinerary.
It’s one of those cruise stories that reminds us just how powerful wind and sea conditions can become—even when a massive cruise ship is tied securely to a pier.
Royal Caribbean Guests Lose the Cabins They Specifically Selected
Now let’s talk about the kind of email that can make a cruiser double-check their reservation.
Some guests booked on Ovation of the Seas were notified that the specific cabins they selected would no longer be their assigned staterooms.
The affected passengers mentioned in the episode were booked on an October 12 four-night sailing to Catalina Island and Ensenada.
Royal Caribbean reportedly said the changes were necessary because the original staterooms’ assigned occupancies needed adjustment. While the cruise line worked on new accommodations, it temporarily changed some reservations to guaranteed status.
And that distinction matters.
Many travelers pay extra to select a specific cabin because they want:
- A particular deck
- A specific location
- Easy access to elevators
- Distance from elevators
- Cabins close to family or friends
- A preferred section of the ship
One passenger referenced in the episode said they paid approximately $300 or more for the privilege of selecting their exact stateroom.
Royal Caribbean said replacement cabins would be in the same category or possibly an upgraded category, but passengers reported mixed experiences with compensation. Some said they received upgrades or onboard credit, while others said nothing had been guaranteed.
Operational changes happen.
Occupancy requirements happen.
Safety requirements happen.

But if I paid extra to specifically choose Cabin 9274, and my reservation suddenly says:
SURPRISE!
Honey…
We need to talk.
Now, if that surprise ends with a suite upgrade?
Then suddenly it becomes:
SURPRISE!!! 😂
Carnival Brings Back the Full Old-School Muster Drill—But Only on Select Sailings
Longtime cruisers, you remember this one.
Everybody gathers at the muster station.
Attendance is checked.
Life jackets are demonstrated.
You hear:
Seven short blasts and one long blast.
And somebody inevitably shows up late while everybody else waits.
The full traditional muster drill is returning on six Carnival sailings, but before anyone starts panicking, the episode makes an important distinction:
Carnival is not permanently eliminating the e-muster system.
These are periodic full in-person safety drills required under maritime regulations.
The episode identified the affected ships as:
Carnival Spirit, Carnival Luminosa, Carnival Legend, Carnival Radiance, Carnival Forenze, and Carnival Miracle.
During the traditional drill:
- Guests report to their assigned muster stations
- Crew members check attendance
- Life jackets are demonstrated
- The emergency signal is played
- Food and beverage service pauses temporarily
Each Carnival ship conducts this type of full drill twice a year to meet safety standards, according to the episode.
So no, this doesn’t mean the entire cruise industry is going back to standing shoulder-to-shoulder at muster stations every embarkation day.
Most sailings will continue using the regular self-muster format.
But if you happen to be on one of those sailings?
Stretch.
Hydrate.
And when they make the announcement…
GO TO YOUR STATION.
Please don’t be the passenger everybody is waiting on. 😂

SpongeBob SquarePants Is Coming to Hero of the Seas

Cruise friends…
I have four words for you:
WHO LIVES IN A PINEAPPLE? 🍍
Royal Caribbean announced that a SpongeBob SquarePants musical will be featured aboard Hero of the Seas.
The production is expected to debut when the ship begins sailing from Miami in August 2027.
The show will be inspired by the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical and will be performed inside the ship’s Royal Theater.
The story follows SpongeBob and his friends as they try to save Bikini Bottom from a volcanic disaster.
And Royal Caribbean appears to be going all-in on the production.
Auditions were already underway for:
- Singers
- Dancers
- Tap performers
- Roller skaters
- Aerial performers
So this is not simply somebody putting on a SpongeBob costume and waving to the kids.
This is being planned as a full theatrical production.

And we already know what’s going to happen.
The kids will be excited.
The adults will say:
“Oh, we’re just going because of the children.”
Then somebody asks:
“Are you ready, kids?”
And half the adults in the theater suddenly remember every word. 😂
Don’t act brand new.
We know the song.

GFree’s Travel Tip of the Day: Save Your Cruise Cabin Receipts
The Ovation of the Seas story gives us today’s perfect Cruise Therapy travel tip:
If you paid extra to select a specific cabin, save everything.
Keep copies of:
- Your original booking confirmation
- Your cabin number
- The amount you paid for cabin selection
- Screenshots from the cruise planner
- Emails showing your original stateroom assignment
If the cruise line later moves you, ask:
Why was my cabin changed?
What category am I being moved to?
Is the new location comparable to the one I selected?
Is compensation or onboard credit available?
Sometimes cabin changes are unavoidable.
But if you paid for a particular service or selection, documentation gives you something concrete to reference when speaking with the cruise line or your travel advisor.
Because memory is one thing.
A booking confirmation?
Baby, those are receipts. 🧾😂

Key Takeaways
🚢 Virgin Voyages: Scarlet Lady broke free from its berth in Rhodes after several mooring lines snapped during rough weather. No guests or crew were injured.
🛏️ Royal Caribbean: Some Ovation of the Seas guests are being reassigned from cabins they specifically selected because of occupancy adjustments.
🦺 Carnival Cruise Line: Traditional full muster drills will appear on selected sailings as part of periodic safety requirements, but e-muster remains the standard for most cruises.
🍍 Hero of the Seas: A full SpongeBob SquarePants-inspired musical is planned for the ship’s Royal Theater beginning with Miami sailings in August 2027.
🧾 Travel Tip: Save documentation whenever you pay extra to select a specific cruise cabin.

Cruise Family, What Would You Do?
Let’s talk.
If your cruise ship suddenly broke free from the dock while you were onboard, which passenger would you be?
A. Calm because the crew handled it.
B. Immediately headed to Guest Services.
C. “Bring me another drink—I don’t need updates.” 🍹😂
Royal Caribbean cruisers: If you paid around $300 extra to select a particular stateroom and were moved to guaranteed status, would you expect:
A refund?
Onboard credit?
An upgrade?
All three?
Carnival cruisers: Which do you prefer—e-muster or the traditional full muster drill?
And finally…
Are you going to see the SpongeBob musical aboard Hero of the Seas?
Because somebody reading this already yelled:
“ARE YOU READY, KIDS?” 😂🍍🚢
The episode invited listeners to weigh in on all four stories.
