Cruise News Roundup: Gulf Storm Watch, Disney’s Historic Captain and Rising Travel Costs

Cruise and travel news is making waves this week—from a developing Gulf storm and a history-making Disney captain to Celebration Key’s busy first year and higher food prices at Disneyland.

In this edition of Your Daily Boarding Call, we are unpacking the biggest headlines without charging an overweight baggage fee or making you fight for the last overhead bin.

Grab your coffee or cocktail, your passport and your emotional-support luggage. Let’s get caught up.

Developing Gulf Storm Could Affect Cruise Itineraries

Tropical Depression Two became better organized over the northeastern Gulf and was expected to strengthen into a tropical storm. The National Hurricane Center warned that tropical-storm conditions could affect portions of the Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle to southeastern Louisiana.

Travelers sailing from Gulf Coast ports should closely monitor:

  • Cruise-line apps and emails
  • Official weather reports
  • Airline and hotel reservations
  • Port transportation updates
  • Embarkation times

Depending on a storm’s path, cruise ships may change routes, skip ports, delay departures or add more time at sea.

Mother Nature does not care that you already purchased a nonrefundable beach cabana. She looked at your itinerary and said, “Oh, that’s cute.”

What Cruisers Should Do

Do not rely on social-media rumors from someone whose source is their cousin’s neighbor who works near the port. Check the National Hurricane Center and contact your cruise line directly.

Cruise Therapy Takeaway: During hurricane season, flexibility is just as important as sunscreen.

Disney Cruise Line Names Its First Female Captain

Disney Cruise Line has reached an important milestone by naming Captain Maria Gotor its first female ship captain.

Captain Maria now commands the Disney Wish after building a maritime career that began when a ferry ride inspired her to leave the legal profession and pursue life at sea.

Her appointment is especially meaningful in an industry where senior shipboard leadership positions have traditionally been held by men.

The glass ceiling has officially been replaced by a glass-bottom boat.

Captain Maria is steering the ship, commanding the bridge, and probably still hearing someone ask, “But who is really driving?”

Congratulations, Captain Maria!

Celebration Key Marks a Busy First Year

Carnival Cruise Line’s Celebration Key opened on Grand Bahama on July 19, 2025. The private destination includes freshwater lagoons, a large swim-up bar, beaches, dining venues and entertainment areas.

As Celebration Key approached its first anniversary, reports estimated that it had welcomed approximately 2.5 million guests. A newly completed pier extension now allows the destination to accommodate as many as four ships at once.

That represents millions of guests enjoying the pools, beaches, food and music—and at least one person in every group refusing to leave their lounge chair until someone brings another drink.

It also represents millions of opportunities for somebody to leave their sunglasses back on the ship.

Carnival Expands Its Surplus-Meal Donation Program

Carnival Corporation is continuing to expand a program that donates prepared but unserved food from its cruise ships to organizations in port communities.

By the end of 2025, the program had provided more than 320,000 meal portions and expanded to 19 ports, with additional destinations planned.

The program helps reduce food waste while supporting organizations that serve people experiencing food insecurity.

Finally, leftovers are doing something more productive than sitting in the refrigerator until we become emotionally prepared to throw them away.

It is a positive example of cruise tourism making an impact beyond the pier.

You May Already Qualify for TSA PreCheck Benefits

Before paying to enroll in TSA PreCheck, check whether the benefit is already available through your employer, military status, trusted traveler membership, or credit card.

Active-duty military members and other eligible uniformed-service members can use TSA PreCheck benefits without paying the standard enrollment fee. Certain Department of Defense civilian employees may also participate after completing the required opt-in process.

Travelers enrolled in Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI generally receive TSA PreCheck access as part of those programs.

Children 17 and younger may accompany an eligible adult through the TSA PreCheck lane when the required indicator appears on their boarding pass. Travelers 18 and older need their own Known Traveler Number.

Some travel credit cards may also reimburse the application fee.

In other words, check your wallet before paying. You may already own the benefit and not know it—like the gym membership you have been generously funding since January.

Important Reminder

TSA PreCheck may help you move through security faster, but it does not mean you should arrive at the airport 15 minutes before departure.

It speeds up screening. It does not give you the ability to teleport.

Disneyland Raises Food and Beverage Prices

Disneyland Resort has increased prices on hundreds of food and beverage items across Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure and resort dining locations.

Reports indicate that approximately 800 menu items were affected, with the average price rising by about 8%. Items including churros, coffee and Mickey-shaped beignets were among the foods that increased in price.

The churro went up. The coffee went up. The beignets went up.

Apparently, the only thing not going up is the amount of money remaining in your bank account.

Ways to Control Theme-Park Food Costs

Families can reduce spending by:

  • Reviewing menus and prices before arriving
  • Setting a daily food budget
  • Sharing larger portions
  • Bringing permitted snacks
  • Ordering complimentary cups of water
  • Limiting souvenir drinks and specialty beverages

Disneyland may be the Happiest Place on Earth, but your credit-card statement is going to need a quiet place to process its feelings.

Travel Tip of the Day: Prepare for Hurricane-Season Changes

Never depend only on the original itinerary printed in your cruise documents during hurricane season.

Before leaving for the port:

  • Download the cruise line’s app.
  • Turn on notifications.
  • Check your email for schedule changes.
  • Confirm your flight and hotel arrangements.
  • Verify port parking and transportation.
  • Review your travel-insurance coverage.

Keep essential medications, identification, chargers, and at least one change of clothes in your carry-on—not in checked luggage.

A cruise line can reroute a ship around bad weather. Unfortunately, it cannot reroute your medication from a suitcase sitting in another terminal.

Key Takeaways

  • Tropical systems may cause cruise lines to change routes, ports and departure times.
  • Travelers should follow official cruise-line and National Hurricane Center updates.
  • Captain Maria Gotor has become Disney Cruise Line’s first female captain.
  • Celebration Key welcomed millions of guests during its first year.
  • Carnival’s surplus-meal program is reducing food waste while helping port communities.
  • Some travelers may already qualify for TSA PreCheck or receive reimbursement through a credit card.
  • Disneyland food and beverage prices have increased across hundreds of menu items.
  • Essential medication and travel documents should always remain in your carry-on.

Cruise News Roundup: Breakfast in Bed, Astronauts at Sea and Quiet Skies

Cruise news is serving breakfast in bed, astronauts at sea, luxury yachts, live music in Nassau, and one airline proposal that may finally bring passengers together.

In this edition of Your Daily Boarding Call, we are unpacking the latest cruise and travel headlines without charging an extra baggage fee—or making you sit through a two-hour safety demonstration.

Grab your coffee or cocktail, passport, and emotional-support luggage. Let’s get caught up.

Carnival Clears Up Its Room Service Breakfast Policy

Carnival Cruise Line says complimentary continental room service breakfast is still available aboard its U.S.-based ships.

Passengers can order select breakfast items between 6:00 and 10:00 a.m. without an additional food charge. However, hot sandwiches, expanded selections, and most room service orders placed outside the breakfast window may come with a fee.

That means you can still enjoy coffee and a light breakfast in bed or on your balcony. Just read the menu carefully before ordering enough food to feed the entire hallway.

One minute, you are enjoying a peaceful croissant with an ocean view. The next minute, the bill arrives—and suddenly that croissant has a mortgage.

Before Placing Your Order

  • Review the current room service menu.
  • Check which items are complimentary.
  • Look for delivery or service charges.
  • Confirm whether gratuities are included.
  • Take a screenshot of the menu before ordering.

Cruise Therapy Takeaway: Complimentary is a beautiful word until a service charge arrives wearing a tiny bathrobe.

Virgin Voyages Is Bringing Astronauts Aboard Its Eclipse Cruises

Virgin Voyages is taking its solar eclipse cruises to another galaxy by bringing astronauts, astrophysicists, spaceflight experts, and science communicators aboard.

Special sailings aboard Valiant Lady and Scarlet Lady will include designated eclipse-viewing areas, astronaut question-and-answer sessions, expert commentary and photography guidance.

Guests may be able to experience the eclipse:

  • In silence
  • With live music
  • With scientific narration
  • With guidance from space and photography experts

Because nothing says Virgin Voyages like watching the sun disappear while a DJ drops the beat.

The voyages will also offer special shore experiences, including observatory visits, caves and geothermal swimming.

Apparently, a regular sea day was no longer dramatic enough.

Luxury Hotel Brands Are Taking Their Service to Sea

Luxury hotel companies are increasingly moving their brands onto the water—and attracting travelers who once said they would never take a cruise.

Brands such as Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, Aman and Orient Express are offering smaller, hotel-inspired yacht experiences with:

  • Spacious accommodations
  • High-end dining
  • Personalized service
  • Fewer passengers
  • Luxury resort-style amenities
  • Carefully planned destination experiences

Some bookings are reportedly averaging around $40,000.

That is not a cruise fare. That is a down payment with a bathrobe.

Many of these guests are loyal hotel customers following a familiar luxury brand onto the water. They may not consider themselves traditional cruisers. Instead, they see the experience as staying at a floating five-star resort that happens to move.

However, if there is a muster drill and someone is making towel animals, you are cruising.

Margaritaville at Sea Plans a Three-Ship Celebration in Nassau

Margaritaville at Sea is planning a major fleet celebration in Nassau on January 28, 2027.

Paradise, Islander and the new Beachcomber are expected to gather in the same destination for the first time. Guests aboard all three ships will receive access to a private Zac Brown Band concert at the Nassau Cruise Port Amphitheater.

The celebration will also include themed sail-away events and a captain’s toast.

Three ships, one concert and thousands of people searching for that lost shaker of salt.

That is not just a port call. It is a floating family reunion with a drink package.

Congress Wants to Keep Phone Calls Off Airplanes

Now, let’s taxi over to the airline news.

Members of Congress are renewing efforts to ban voice and video calls aboard U.S. flights.

Airlines currently prohibit calls through their own policies, but faster satellite Wi-Fi could make onboard calling much easier. The proposed Quiet Skies Act would establish a permanent federal rule.

Finally, a political issue many travelers may be able to agree on.

We already know too much about strangers at the airport. We do not need to hear someone’s entire breakup while trapped in Row 23.

Imagine sitting next to a passenger who says, “No, I can talk. I’m just on the plane.”

No, you cannot.

You may text, scroll, sleep, and silently judge the boarding process like the rest of us.

Supporters believe in-flight calls could:

  • Disturb nearby passengers
  • Create arguments or conflicts
  • Make cabin-crew duties more difficult
  • Add unnecessary noise to an enclosed space

At 35,000 feet, the only conversation I want to hear is, “Would you like another beverage?”

A New Chase Sapphire Lounge Opens at Dallas–Fort Worth

Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport has opened a new Chase Sapphire Lounge near Gate D25 in Terminal D.

The two-level lounge includes:

  • Nap pods
  • Spa treatments
  • Showers
  • Family areas
  • Nursing facilities
  • Texas-inspired food

Access is primarily available to eligible Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders and qualifying guests.

The lounge may sound luxurious, but remember: no airport lounge is relaxing enough to make you forget that your gate is in another terminal.

Travel Tip of the Day: Screenshot Menus and Package Benefits

Before ordering room service or using a cruise-package benefit, take a picture or screenshot of the current menu and included items in the cruise line’s app.

Cruise prices, menus, and package benefits can change. A screenshot helps you remember exactly what was listed when you placed your order or purchased the package.

Always check for:

  • Delivery charges
  • Service fees
  • Automatic gratuities
  • Premium-item charges
  • Time restrictions
  • Daily limits
  • Items excluded from a package

Keeping a copy can also help if you need to ask Guest Services about an unexpected charge.

  • Travelers should check menus carefully for premium items and service charges.
  • Virgin Voyages is adding astronauts and science experts to its solar eclipse sailings.
  • Luxury hotel brands are attracting new travelers through smaller yacht-style cruises.

What’s New in Cruise Travel This June: Food, Fun, New Ships & Fresh Itineraries

Cruise lovers, this one is for you. June is bringing plenty of exciting updates across the cruise industry, and if you have been thinking about booking your next sailing, these announcements may give you a little extra inspiration.

From new dining experiences and refreshed private islands to expanded South Pacific itineraries, family-friendly entertainment, and brand-new ships, cruise lines are continuing to raise the bar. Here is what travelers should know now.

Carnival Is Turning Up the Flavor

Carnival Cruise Line is making a major culinary move with the launch of “The Next Course,” a new dining initiative designed to bring more variety, flavor, and convenience to guests at sea.

Some of the new dining concepts include Emeril’s Coastal Seafood, featuring coastal-inspired cuisine from Chef Emeril Lagasse, and Uku Lei Lei, which will bring Hawaiian flavors and Asian classics onboard. Carnival is also introducing Fetaccine, a restaurant blending Italian favorites with Greek-inspired dishes, along with Le Bistro Musicale, a French dining experience exclusive to Carnival Festivale.

Carnival is also refreshing dining across the fleet. Guests can look forward to updated main dining room menus, Lido Marketplace improvements, a new Lido Family Menu, Bagels @ Sea, revamped Chef’s Table dinners, mobile coffee ordering, and faster Express Dining options.

For cruisers who plan their vacation around the food, Carnival is giving you even more reasons to come hungry.

RelaxAway at Half Moon Cay Gets a Fresh New Look

Carnival is also expanding its private destination experience at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay. The refreshed south-side beach area now includes more reservable cabanas and daybeds, upgraded food and beverage options, a scenic Papaya Pathway, and tram service to help guests get around more easily.

One of the biggest upgrades is the addition of a pier that allows newer ships to dock. That means smoother arrivals and more time for guests to enjoy the island.

Private destinations are becoming a major part of the cruise experience, and this update makes Half Moon Cay even more appealing for beach lovers.

Carnival Magic and Carnival Glory Receive Fresh Enhancements

Carnival Magic has returned to Miami after an extensive dry dock with several upgrades. Guests will notice a refreshed casino and arcade, a redesigned Lido restaurant, an updated WaterWorks splash zone, a new mini-golf course, renovated Cloud 9 Spa areas, refreshed retail spaces, and a new bow crest.

Carnival Glory also received enhancements before returning to short Bahamian cruises from Port Canaveral. Updates include a new non-smoking casino and a Club O2 lounge for teens.

These improvements show that Carnival is not only focused on new ships but also on investing in guest experiences across existing ships.

  • Carnival Glory adds a new non-smoking casino

Royal Caribbean Welcomes Legend of the Seas

Royal Caribbean has officially taken delivery of Legend of the Seas, the third ship in its Icon Class. This massive 250,000-gross-ton ship was delivered by Meyer Turku shipyard after a two-year build.

Legend of the Seas will begin with Mediterranean voyages in summer 2026 before repositioning to Fort Lauderdale in November.

For travelers who love Royal Caribbean’s big-ship energy, this is one to watch. Icon-class ships are known for over-the-top attractions, family-friendly neighborhoods, entertainment, dining, and resort-style experiences at sea.

A New Cruise Terminal Opens in Seward, Alaska

Photo by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line

Royal Caribbean, the Alaska Railroad, the City of Seward, and Turnagain Marine have opened the new Dale R. & Carol Ann Lindsey Alaska Railroad Cruise Terminal in Seward, Alaska.

This new terminal replaces older 1960s-era facilities and features 41,500 square feet of enclosed space, shore-power capability, and convenient access near the railroad depot. That location makes it easier for guests to connect between Seward and Anchorage.

For Alaska cruisers, this is great news. The embarkation and debarkation experience can make a big difference, especially when travelers are connecting to land tours, trains, or flights.

Royal Caribbean Adds La Romana to Rhapsody of the Seas

Photo by Royal Caribbean Crusie Line

Royal Caribbean has also added La Romana, Dominican Republic, to the July 4, 2026 sailing of Rhapsody of the Seas. The new port replaces a sea day and joins an itinerary that also includes Tortola, St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Kitts, and St. Croix.

For guests booked on this sailing, this means one more destination to explore and one less day at sea. For port lovers, that is a welcome change.

Norwegian Spirit Extends South Pacific Sailings

Norwegian Cruise Line is extending Norwegian Spirit’s South Pacific program through December 2026 and into 2027. The ship will sail from Lautoka, Fiji; Sydney, Australia; and Papeete, Tahiti, offering 8- to 13-day itineraries.

Ports will include destinations in Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and the Cook Islands.

This is exciting for travelers who want something beyond the usual Caribbean or Bahamas cruise. The South Pacific offers dreamy beaches, rich culture, and once-in-a-lifetime island-hopping opportunities.

Disney Cruise Line Brings More Magic to Sea

Disney Cruise Line continues to lean into immersive entertainment for families and Disney fans.

On Disney Fantasy, Pixar Day at Sea gives guests a themed experience with character encounters, interactive shows, pool parties, crafts, and Pixar-inspired dining. Guests may meet favorites like Woody, Buzz, Sulley, and Forky while enjoying a full day of Pixar fun.

Disney is also adding special summer 2026 entertainment, including Frozen Day in Alaska, Broadway Stars at Sea, new deck parties, and an updated pirate-themed show.

And looking ahead, Disney has revealed its next Wish-class ship, Disney Believe, scheduled for delivery in late 2027. The ship’s theme will focus on promise and possibilities, blending storytelling from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars.

For families, Disney continues to make cruising feel like a floating theme park with heart.

MSC Cruises Launches Oceans Day for Families

MSC Cruises and the MSC Foundation have launched Oceans Day powered by MSC Foundation, a new onboard educational program for children and families.

The program uses games, creative workshops, and a pledge passport to help young cruisers learn how to become ocean ambassadors. It encourages families to take positive actions both on board and at home.

This is a meaningful addition for families who want their vacation to include fun and purpose. It also supports the growing trend of travelers wanting more sustainable and educational experiences.

MSC World Asia Promises Big Attractions

MSC World Asia, expected to launch in late 2026, is already getting attention for its onboard attractions.

Highlights include the Cliffhanger over-water swing ride, The Spiral @ Tree of Life dry slide, Twin Racer and U Drop waterslides, Adventure Trail ropes course, MSC Formula Racer simulator, and MSC Luna Park Arena with immersive technology.

The ship will also feature more than 40 bars, lounges, and restaurants, plus expanded MSC Yacht Club suite options.

For travelers who enjoy large ships with plenty to do, MSC World Asia sounds like it will deliver a full resort-style experience at sea.

Celebrity’s 2026 President’s Cruise Sails the Mediterranean

Celebrity Cruises’ 2026 President’s Cruise will take place September 13–21, 2026, aboard the new Celebrity Xcel.

This eight-night sailing departs from Athens and visits Mykonos, Rhodes, Santorini, Ephesus, and Malta before ending in Barcelona. The cruise will also include exclusive events hosted by Celebrity’s president and senior executives.

For travelers who love elevated cruising, Mediterranean ports, and special onboard events, this sailing could be a standout.

What This Means for Cruise Travelers

The cruise industry is clearly focused on giving travelers more choices. Cruise lines are investing in better food, larger ships, private island upgrades, immersive entertainment, family programming, and more unique itineraries.

For travelers, that means your next cruise can be more personalized than ever. Whether you want foodie experiences, island relaxation, family fun, Alaska adventure, South Pacific beauty, or Mediterranean elegance, there is something new waiting at sea.

Cruise vacations are changing fast, and the best experiences often start with choosing the right ship, itinerary, and timing.

If one of these updates caught your attention, now is a great time to start planning. Whether you are dreaming about Carnival’s new dining experiences, Royal Caribbean’s newest Icon-class ship, Disney’s family magic, MSC’s bold attractions, or a South Pacific sailing with Norwegian, Cruise Therapy can help you match the right cruise to your travel style.

Carnival Cruise 2025: Key Policy Updates You Should Know

Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned Carnival fan, it’s important to know that Carnival Cruise Line has recently updated several onboard policies that could impact your next vacation at sea. These changes are part of the company’s ongoing “Have Fun. Be Safe.” initiative, designed to improve the guest experience, safety, and onboard etiquette.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s new and how to cruise smart in 2025:

🔞 Updated Age & Curfew Policy

One of the most notable changes affects solo and youth travelers:

  • Guests must be at least 21 years old to cruise alone.
  • Travelers aged 18–20 must be booked in a cabin with someone 25 or older.
  • Minors (17 and under) are required to return to their cabins or be with a guardian by 1:00 AM unless participating in a supervised youth activity.

👉 What it means: If you’re planning a spring break trip or graduation celebration, make sure your booking aligns with these new-age requirements to avoid surprises at embarkation.

🚫 No-Tolerance Drug Policy

Carnival is reinforcing its federal law-compliant ban on cannabis, including:

  • Marijuana in all forms (even medically prescribed or legal in your home state)
  • THC vapes, edibles, oils, or related paraphernalia

🔒 Violation consequences include: removal from the ship, law enforcement involvement, fines, and even a lifetime ban.

🔇 Restrictions on Personal Music & Fans

To ensure a more peaceful onboard environment, Carnival has banned the following items in public spaces:

  • Bluetooth speakers (used for playing music aloud)
  • Non-battery, hand-held clack fans (popular at parties and in ballroom culture)

These changes are part of efforts to minimize loud or disruptive environments, especially around pool decks and dining areas.

🪑 Pool Chair Time Limit

We’ve all seen it—someone “reserving” a lounger with a towel at sunrise and not showing up for hours. Carnival is cracking down by enforcing a 40-minute time limit for unattended pool loungers.

⏱️ After that, your belongings may be moved so others can enjoy the space.

🌟 Why These Rules Matter

Carnival says these updates are about making the cruise experience more inclusive, safe, and respectful for all passengers. However, some guests have expressed concerns—particularly around how certain cultural expressions (like clack fans and hip-hop music) are being policed.

Whether you’re for or against the new policies, one thing is clear: knowing the rules before you board ensures a smoother, stress-free sailing experience.

🧳 Final Cruise Tips

Before your cruise:

  • Review Carnival’s latest policies on their website
  • Pack smart — leave restricted items at home
  • Download the Carnival Hub App to stay updated with onboard activities and notifications
