Norwegian Cruise Line is bringing the music of Whitney Houston to the high seas aboard Norwegian Aura. Royal Caribbean has selected retired U.S. Air Force General Lori J. Robinson as godmother of Legend of the Seas. Ruby Princess has helped kick off San Diego’s busiest cruise season in more than 15 years. And Walt Disney World has released its first batch of 2027 vacation offers.

So grab your boarding pass, grab something from the bar, and please explain why you packed 200 cruise ducks but forgot your toothbrush. 🦆🪥😂

Here’s what’s happening.

🎤 Norwegian Aura Is Bringing Whitney Houston to the High Seas

Norwegian Cruise Line apparently looked at its entertainment lineup and said:

Prince? Check.
Elton John? Check.
Now bring us Whitney.

When Norwegian Aura debuts in May 2027, one of its headline productions will celebrate the music of Whitney Houston.

According to the episode, the new 45-minute production was developed with the estate of Whitney E. Houston and Primary Wave Music and will feature live singers, a live band, choreography, immersive visuals, and performances extending beyond the main stage inside the three-story Aura Theater and Club.

And the music?

We’re talking songs including:

  • It’s Not Right But It’s Okay
  • How Will I Know
  • I’m Every Woman
  • One Moment in Time
  • I Will Always Love You

Cruise Cousins, that last song is where things are going to get dangerous.

Because somebody in the third row is going to forget this is a tribute show, stand up, and suddenly believe they have Whitney’s vocal range.

And by somebody…

I mean me. 😂

And by someone else…

I mean you yelling:

“Ma’am, PLEASE sit down!”

Norwegian Aura will also feature other entertainment mentioned in the episode, including Illuminux, The Vinyl Republic, and the adults-only Lunatique Pop Circus.

The ship hasn’t even started sailing yet and apparently we already need concert tickets.

⚓ General Lori J. Robinson Named Godmother of Legend of the Seas

Speaking of legends…

Royal Caribbean has selected someone who already made history to serve as godmother of Legend of the Seas.

Retired U.S. Air Force General Lori J. Robinson will take on the ceremonial role.

Robinson served 37 years in the U.S. Air Force, and in 2016 became the first woman in U.S. history to lead a U.S. combatant command when she took command of U.S. Northern Command and NORAD.

NORAD—the North American Aerospace Defense Command—helps monitor and protect the airspace over the United States and Canada.

So basically…

While some of us were worried about whether our airline boarding position was B42…

General Robinson was responsible for the continent. 😂

Royal Caribbean plans to celebrate Robinson during the ship’s naming ceremony in Fort Lauderdale on Veterans Day, November 11.

The timing is intentional.

According to the episode, the ceremony will recognize both Robinson’s service and generations of military members among Royal Caribbean’s guests and crew.

Legend of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s third Icon Class ship. The episode notes that she entered service in Europe this summer and is expected to make her first transatlantic crossing in late October before beginning Caribbean cruises from Fort Lauderdale.

Royal Caribbean needed a godmother for a ship called Legend.

Apparently they said:

“Let’s find an actual one.”

Congratulations, General Robinson.

🌴 San Diego’s Cruise Season Is Getting MUCH Busier

West Coast cruisers, San Diego is officially getting busier.

Ruby Princess arrived at San Diego’s B Street Pier to begin a seven-day Classic California Coast cruise—and also helped kick off what the Port of San Diego expects to be its largest cruise season in more than 15 years.

The numbers in the episode show just how dramatic the growth is.

For the 2026–2027 cruise season, San Diego expects:

183 cruise voyages

Compare that with:

  • 109 voyages last season
  • 75 voyages the season before that

San Diego basically looked at the cruise schedule and said:

“Go ahead. Bring everybody.” 😂

The port expects to welcome more than 700,000 cruise passengers during the season.

Several cruise lines are also increasing their presence.

Royal Caribbean is adding new homeport operations.

Disney Cruise Line is expanding its San Diego service with Disney Magic joining Disney Wonder.

The episode also notes that Disney and the Port of San Diego recently signed an agreement extending through at least 2031, which is expected to roughly double Disney’s cruise presence there.

🏰 Disney World Releases Its First 2027 Vacation Deals

Now let’s move from the cruise terminal to the theme park.

Because Disney World announced something that always gets my attention:

A discount.

Disney and savings in the same sentence?

Let me put my glasses on. 👓😂

According to the episode, Walt Disney World has released its first round of 2027 vacation offers.

Guests booking select four-night, four-day room-and-ticket packages may save up to $250 per night on qualifying stays between January 3 and July 28, 2027.

There are also room-only offers.

But Cruise Family, remember these two little words:

“UP TO.”

Those two words do a lot of work in travel advertising.

They do not necessarily mean:

  • every resort
  • every room category
  • every travel date
  • every vacation package
  • every traveler

will receive the maximum savings.

Availability and eligibility matter.

Still, if Disney World was already on your 2027 vacation radar, these offers may be worth comparing.

Because Disney vacation math gets complicated quickly:

Hotel.

Tickets.

Dining.

Flights.

Transfers.

Souvenirs.

And somehow somebody still needs a $47 light-up bubble wand. 😂

Today’s Disney promotion gives us the perfect travel reminder.

Never assume the advertised promotion is automatically the cheapest option.

When you see:

“Save up to $250 per night!”

“30% off!”

or

“Free upgrade!”

look beyond the headline.

Compare:

  • travel dates
  • hotel category
  • room category
  • ticket requirements
  • minimum stay requirements
  • cancellation terms
  • what you were planning to purchase anyway
  • total vacation cost

Sometimes a promotion can save you hundreds.

Other times?

Changing your trip by one day might save you even more.

And if you already have a future trip booked, check whether a newly released offer can be applied to your existing reservation.

The prettiest discount banner does not always equal the cheapest vacation.

Compare before you click.

Cruise family, today’s Boarding Call has itinerary changes, a serious federal case, five new places to grab a drink, and another reminder that loyalty programs sometimes require a spreadsheet, three passwords, and a minor in contract law. 😂

Norwegian Cruise Line has made major changes to a future Alaska sailing aboard Norwegian Joy; a Chicago man has been federally indicted over an alleged cruise ship bomb threat; MSC World Asia is introducing five new bars and lounges; and American Airlines and Hyatt are ending their enhanced loyalty relationship.

Grab your boarding pass—and apparently keep an eye on that carry-on if it starts moving and making eye contact. 🦞😂

Here’s what travelers need to know.

🏔️ Norwegian Joy Drops Skagway and Sitka From a Future Alaska Cruise

If you’ve ever planned an Alaska cruise, you already know the itinerary can be just as important as the ship.

Passengers booked aboard Norwegian Joy’s May 19, 2028 sailing recently received notice of significant itinerary changes.

The 10-night round-trip cruise from Seattle was originally scheduled to include several popular Alaska destinations, including Skagway, Sitka, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan, glacier scenic cruising, and Victoria.

As of this current episode:

Skagway is out.

Sitka is out.

And Whittier is in.

The glacier scenic cruising day and the call at Icy Strait Point are also shifting, while Ketchikan remains on the itinerary, but the visit is shortened by about four hours.

Norwegian reportedly cited berth availability as the reason for the changes.

Basically, somewhere along the way there wasn’t enough room at the dock—and one change created several others.

That’s exactly why Alaska cruisers can get emotional about itinerary changes.

Nobody books Skagway and says:

“Eh, I really don’t care if we go.”

No.

People have train rides planned.

Whale-watching excursions booked.

Helicopter tours.

Glaciers.

Dog sledding.

And approximately 47 layers of clothing already sitting in an Amazon cart. 😂

Fortunately, this cruise is still more than 20 months away, giving guests plenty of time to reassess their plans.

But if Sitka or Skagway was the main reason you selected this sailing, now is the time to review the revised itinerary.

🚨 Federal Indictment Follows Alleged Cruise Ship Bomb Threat

Now we move to a much more serious story.

Federal prosecutors announced that a 20-year-old Chicago man has been indicted in connection with an alleged threat involving passengers aboard a cruise ship.

According to the federal indictment described in the episode, the alleged threat was made during a recorded call on December 6, 2025.

Prosecutors allege that the caller claimed he was aboard a cruise ship returning from the Bahamas, had a bomb onboard, and intended to blow up the vessel.

Authorities did not publicly identify the cruise ship at the time.

The case was investigated by the FBI and is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida. If convicted, the defendant could face up to five years in prison.

It is important to emphasize:

An indictment is an accusation—not a conviction.

The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

There really isn’t a joke here.

Threats like these can affect passengers, crew members, law enforcement officers, port workers, and emergency responders.

Even when a threat ultimately turns out to be false, authorities still have to treat the response as real.

That can mean:

  • searches
  • diversions
  • evacuations
  • delays
  • emergency responses
  • frightened passengers and crew

Some things simply don’t belong anywhere near a cruise vacation.

This is one of them.

🍹 MSC World Asia Is Adding Five New Bars and Lounges

Okay, Cruise Family.

We needed something lighter.

And apparently MSC World Asia heard the call.

“GFree, paging GFree. Please come to the bar.”

Actually…

Come to FIVE of them. 😂

MSC Cruises has unveiled five new bar and lounge concepts for MSC World Asia, debuting on December 4, 2026.

And one venue clearly understood the assignment.

🥤 Clubhouse and Soda Bar Brings Back the ’80s and ’90s

The Clubhouse and Soda Bar is inspired by the 1980s and 1990s.

Guests will be able to create custom sodas using different:

  • soda bases
  • creams
  • flavors
  • toppings

The venue will also feature games, interactive digital tables, and a nearby LEGO area.

Then at night?

The vibe grows up a little with cocktails, mocktails, and a more social atmosphere.

So during the day:

Saved by the Bell.

At night:

Miami Vice. 😂

The Sky Box Bar is expected to offer theatrical interpretations of classic cocktails.

Think familiar drinks—with a little more presentation and showmanship.

The Terraces Bar & Lounge

Prefer something a little more Mediterranean?

The Terraces Bar & Lounge will bring an Italian aperitivo-style atmosphere with:

🍾 Prosecco
🍷 Wine
🥖 Focaccia
🫒 Olives
🌊 Ocean views

Honestly, just point me toward the chair facing the water.

🪸 Coral Cove Bar

The Coral Cove Bar will be located beside an indoor pool inspired by Philippine coral reefs.

That should give the venue a tropical, aquatic atmosphere without even requiring guests to leave the ship.

🍵 Pan Asian Bar Brings the Matcha Colada

Then we have the Pan Asian Bar.

The episode mentions drinks including:

  • Jasmine Mojito
  • a rose-and-strawberry daiquiri
  • Matcha Colada

A Matcha Colada?

Cruise Family…

I don’t know whether that’s wellness, vacation, or a cry for help.

But I will absolutely taste it.

For research purposes, of course. 😂

✈️ American Airlines and Hyatt Are Changing Their Loyalty Relationship

From the cruise terminal…

to the airport.

American Airlines and Hyatt are ending their enhanced loyalty partnership.

According to the episode, the companies announced that they mutually decided not to continue the expanded relationship between American Airlines AAdvantage and World of Hyatt.

But before anyone starts deleting apps…

Slow down.

The partnership is not disappearing overnight.

Members may continue earning or using certain eligible benefits through the applicable earning periods.

One date mentioned in the episode is especially important:

November 15, 2026

Members who link their American Airlines and Hyatt accounts by that deadline may preserve certain benefits for a little longer.

The episode also notes that some AAdvantage members may continue earning Hyatt-related rewards through February 28, 2027, while some World of Hyatt members may continue earning eligible American Airlines rewards through December 31.

If you actively use both loyalty programs, now would be a good time to:

  • make sure your accounts are linked
  • review your current benefits
  • determine which perks you actually use
  • note the applicable deadlines

Because loyalty programs will announce an exciting “enhancement”…

and six months later you need:

a spreadsheet,
three passwords,
a calculator,

Today’s Norwegian Joy story is a perfect reminder.

If a specific cruise port is a must-do destination for you, build flexibility into anything you book independently.

Before paying for:

  • private excursions
  • train tickets
  • tours
  • transfers
  • nonrefundable activities

Read the cancellation policy.

Cruise itineraries can change for many reasons, including:

⚓ Port congestion
🚢 Berth availability
🔧 Mechanical issues
📋 Operational needs

Cruise-line excursions are generally easier for the cruise line to adjust when the itinerary itself changes.

Independent excursions can be wonderful—and sometimes offer more personalized experiences—but you should know exactly what happens to your money if the ship never arrives.

Because Cruise Family:

The ship may change course. Your refund policy shouldn’t sink with it.

Apparently, cruise ships decided to put the LABOR in Labor Day this weekend. 😂🚢

Today’s Your Daily Boarding Call brought us three cruise headlines that sounded dramatic at first—but fortunately, none resulted in reported serious injuries.

A fire broke out aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s future flagship while the ship is still under construction. Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas temporarily lost power at sea. 🔥 Norwegian Aura Isn’t Even Sailing Yet—and She’s Already Making Headlines

Norwegian Cruise Line’s future flagship, Norwegian Aura, is currently under construction in Italy.

On Friday, August 28, shipyard workers reportedly spotted a large cloud of black smoke rising from the vessel.

Yes, Crewmates.

The ship hasn’t even started carrying passengers yet, and somebody already had to ask:

“Is that supposed to be smoking?” 😳

Fortunately, the incident appears to have been much less serious than the images of black smoke might have suggested.

According to the reports referenced in the podcast, the fire started inside a container holding construction waste and debris aboard the vessel. The shipyard’s emergency team responded and contained the fire.

No injuries or significant damage were reported.

Norwegian Aura remains scheduled to debut in May 2027. After an inaugural Mediterranean season, the ship is expected to sail year-round Caribbean itineraries from Miami and carry nearly 3,900 guests.

💡 Adventure of the Seas Goes Dark for About 30 Minutes

From fire…

to darkness.

Guests aboard Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas experienced an unexpected shipwide power outage after departing Perfect Day at CocoCay during an eight-night Southern Caribbean cruise from Port Canaveral.

Suddenly:

  • stateroom lights went dark
  • elevators stopped operating
  • dining service temporarily paused
  • Passengers started using their phones as flashlights

Emergency lighting remained available, and the captain reportedly announced that the crew was working to restore power.

Electricity returned roughly 30 minutes later.

No injuries were reported, and the ship’s itinerary appeared to continue normally.

Royal Caribbean had not publicly confirmed the exact cause of the outage at the time discussed in the podcast.

Thirty minutes doesn’t sound terribly long.

Unless you’re on a cruise ship.

💦 Quantum of the Seas Gets an Indoor Waterfall Nobody Ordered

Apparently Royal Caribbean wasn’t finished.

Passengers aboard Quantum of the Seas recently discovered a new attraction that definitely wasn’t listed in the Cruise Compass:

An indoor waterfall.

Video shared online reportedly showed water pouring down a stairwell near the Royal Esplanade while the ship was sailing near Cabo San Lucas.

Because stormy weather was occurring outside, some passengers initially assumed the flooding was connected to the weather.

Guest reports, however, indicated that a pipe near the men’s restroom around the midship elevator area may have caused the water leak.

Crew members quickly blocked off the affected area as water poured down the staircase and collected below.

Reports from guests aboard the following sailing suggested there were no obvious signs of the previous leak, indicating that cleanup and repairs were completed fairly quickly.

Royal Caribbean had not issued a public statement about the incident at the time of the podcast.

We need to talk.

Beginning with published sailings in November 2026, Princess Cruises will start replacing calls at Princess Cay with visits to RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay on affected Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries.

Yes, you heard that correctly.

Princess Cruises is dropping a destination with Princess in the name.

Honey, that breakup is serious.

They’re taking the family name back.

Why Is Princess Making the Change?

According to the original episode, Princess Cruises confirmed the itinerary changes but had not publicly announced a specific reason for the switch.

Both destinations fall within the broader Carnival Corporation family, but RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay has been undergoing significant upgrades.

The cruise line has announced the future Chief Dog Officer aboard Hero of the Seas, and her name is:

Royal Caribbean President and CEO Michael Bayley announced the winning name after cruisers helped choose from a list of finalists.

Interestingly, Dolly was not originally among the choices.

What’s Inside Great Tides Waterpark?

Carnival cruisers, tomorrow is a pretty big day.

On September 1, 2026, Carnival Cruise Line officially launches its new Carnival Rewards program, replacing the longtime VIFP loyalty program.

And the biggest change?

Your loyalty status will no longer depend primarily on how many days you have sailed.

Instead, guests will earn Stars toward status based on eligible spending with Carnival.

Translation:

Your sea days used to say:

“Look how loyal I am.”

Now your credit card may be saying:

“Move over. I got this.”

What Happens to Existing VIFP Status?

Existing VIFP members had through August 31 to opt into the new program so their loyalty history could transfer.

According to the episode, eligible guests will keep the status they have earned through today until December 2028, providing a transition period into the new system.

And longtime Diamond cruisers have some good news:

Diamond remains a lifetime status.

Royal Caribbean did not sell CocoCay.

They did not move CocoCay.

They did not remove the pool.

is now officially:

Norwegian Cruise Line has made a change that families and larger groups may actually appreciate.

For eligible new bookings made on or after August 26, Norwegian has expanded part of its Free at Sea specialty-dining benefit.

The specialty-dining option can now extend to guests 3 through 8 in the same stateroom.

Previously, the benefit primarily focused on the first two guests.

And if you have ever traveled with a larger family, you already know how that conversation could go.

Deadly Flash Flood Hits Grand Canyon, National Park

We need to shift gears for the next story.

A significant flash flood struck portions of Grand Canyon National Park over the weekend.

One of the most dangerous things about flash flooding is that the storm does not always have to be directly above you.

Places such as:

  • The Grand Canyon
  • Desert parks
  • Slot canyons
  • Dry washes
  • Narrow gorges

can experience dangerous flooding caused by storms happening miles away.

Before hiking, always:

  • Check National Park Service alerts
  • Review the latest weather forecast
  • Ask rangers about trail conditions
  • Learn where flash-flood risks are highest
  • Follow closure orders immediately

And if officials say:

“Turn around.”

Turn around.

The canyon will still be there next year.

New York cruisers, Norwegian Escape has pulled up to Manhattan.

The ship arrived at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal after completing a summer season from Port Canaveral.

Norwegian Escape kicked off its New York deployment with a 10-night Eastern Caribbean cruise, visiting destinations including:

  • San Juan
  • Puerto Plata
  • St. Thomas
  • Tortola
  • St. Maarten

After that, the ship is scheduled to spend much of September offering seven-night Canada and New England cruises.

Those itineraries include ports such as:

  • Halifax
  • Boston
  • Newport
  • Sydney
  • Portland

Then Norwegian Escape is expected to wrap up the season with a 16-night transatlantic sailing from Manhattan to Barcelona.

This ship needs two wardrobes.

Monday:

“Where are my flip-flops?”

Next week:

Three weeks later:

“Hola, Barcelona!”

That is range.

More Cruise Options for the Northeast

Norwegian continues to maintain a strong presence in New York, giving Northeast cruisers more opportunities to board a ship without first flying to Florida.

Now let’s head south to Jamaica for some encouraging news.

Royalton Negril officially reopened after months of recovery work following Hurricane Melissa.

The 573-room resort had been closed after sustaining damage in October 2025.

Following extensive restoration and renovation work, guests are returning.

But there is another number that matters just as much:

960 employees are back at work.

Resort Recovery Is Also Community Recovery

When we talk about a resort reopening after a hurricane, it is easy to focus on:

  • Pools
  • Restaurants
  • Beaches

But tourism is also somebody’s:

Job. Mortgage. Grocery bill. Light bill. Medical bill. Family income.

Disney Wish Is Heading to New York City

Mickey finally handed over the map.

After teasing mysterious geographic coordinates on social media, Disney Cruise Line officially announced its Fall 2027 and Spring 2028 itineraries on August 25, 2026.

And the big headline?

Disney Wish is heading to New York City.

Starting in late September 2027, Disney Wish is scheduled to operate seven special cruises from New York, ranging from four to seven nights.

Some itineraries will visit Bermuda, while others will head north toward Canada and New England.

Just imagine Disney Wish sailing past the Statue of Liberty.

Disney also announced:

  • A new Panama Canal crossing aboard Disney Magic

Norwegian Aqua Is Going Short With Three- and Four-Night Cruises

For the cruisers who say:

“I want to cruise, but I don’t have seven days.”

Norwegian Cruise Line heard you.

Beginning April 28, 2028, Norwegian Aqua is scheduled to begin sailing three- and four-night Bahamas cruises from PortMiami.

We are talking:

Long-weekend Cruise Therapy.

Three-night cruises are expected to depart on Fridays, while four-night sailings are expected to leave on Mondays.

Each itinerary is scheduled to include:

  • Nassau
  • Great Stirrup Cay

Norwegian Aqua is expected to offer more than 50 short cruises between late April and late October 2028.

That makes it easier to squeeze in a cruise between work schedules, school calendars, or one of those weeks when you suddenly realize:

I need to get on a ship before somebody gets on my nerves.

And now, when somebody asks:

“Didn’t you just get back from a cruise?”

You can respond:

“That was last weekend. Three nights. That wasn’t a vacation. That was maritime self-care.”

Carnival Cruise Director Robby Howell Announces Retirement

Now for a bittersweet Carnival update.

Popular Carnival Cruise Director Robby Howell announced that he is retiring from ship life after approximately 10 years at sea.

Howell said the decision was entirely his and that he is looking forward to starting a new chapter on land with his wife.

But he isn’t gone just yet.

His final cruise aboard Carnival Venezia is scheduled to leave Port Canaveral on November 1, with his Carnival career concluding when that voyage ends on November 8.

He is calling the remaining stretch:

“Robby’s Retirement Run.”

And I love that.

After spending a decade getting thousands of people to dance, laugh, sing, and participate in activities, Robby finally gets to wake up without having to say:

“GOOD MORNING, CARNIVAL FAMILY!”

Congratulations, Robby.

Somewhere, his alarm clock is already celebrating.

Passenger Dies After Fall Aboard Norwegian Getaway

We need to shift gears for the next story.

A male passenger aboard Norwegian Getaway died after falling from a balcony onto a lower deck late Sunday night, August 23.

The ship was on the final night of a three-night Bahamas cruise from Miami after visiting Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay.

Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed that the guest fell from a balcony to a lower deck.

Crew members immediately responded and attempted lifesaving measures, but sadly, the passenger did not survive.

His identity had not been publicly released at the time of the incident.

Most importantly, authorities had not determined the cause of the fall.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office was investigating the incident as an unclassified death investigation.

There is no need for speculation here.

Behind every headline is a family receiving news that changes their lives forever.

Our thoughts are with the passenger’s family, friends, fellow travelers, and the crew members who responded.

Puerto Rico Faces Historic Drought and Water Rationing

Now let’s head ashore to Puerto Rico.

If you have an upcoming Puerto Rico vacation, cruise pre-stay, post-cruise hotel stay, or San Juan getaway, this is one update worth paying attention to.

Puerto Rico is facing a severe, historic drought.

According to the episode, San Juan had its driest July in 120 years, while nearly a quarter of Puerto Rico faced severe drought conditions.

Because of the water shortage, some areas began a 48-hours-on, 48-hours-off water rationing schedule on August 7.

That means water service alternates every two days in affected municipalities.

Should Travelers Cancel?

Not necessarily.

Hotels remain open.

Visitors are still welcome.

Many hotels have contingency plans in place.

  • Turning off faucets while brushing your teeth
  • Reusing towels when possible
  • Avoiding unnecessary water use
  • Contacting your hotel before arrival

And yes…

This may finally be the vacation where that little bathroom sign saying:

“Help us save the planet—reuse your towel”

isn’t just the hotel trying to avoid doing laundry.

They really mean it.

Contact Your Hotel Before Traveling

Before leaving home, ask:

  • Is water service normal?
  • Are pools operating?
  • Are hotel restaurants open?
  • Are excursions running?
  • Are any services limited?
  • Is the property affected by rationing?

Five minutes on the phone could save you a lot of surprises after arrival.

Because the only hotel surprise I want is:

“Ms. Freeman, you’ve been upgraded to the Presidential Suite.”

That surprise?

🌴 Travel Tip of the Day: Call the Hotel, Not Just the Airline

When a destination is experiencing a drought, storm, wildfire, flooding, or other local disruption, do not rely only on your airline or cruise line for information.

Your flight may be operating normally.

Your cruise may still be sailing.

But conditions at your hotel or destination may be very different.

Before departure, contact the property and ask:

  • Is water service normal?
  • Are restaurants operating?
  • Are pools open?
  • Are excursions running?
  • Are any areas closed?
  • Should I prepare differently?

Also review:

  • Your travel insurance
  • Hotel cancellation policies
  • Transportation arrangements
  • Excursion policies
  • Local emergency notices

A quick phone call before departure can prevent a vacation from starting with:

“Wait…nobody told me THAT.”

Tropical Storm Forces Norwegian Cruise Line to Change Two Hawaii Sailings

Mother Nature has rewritten another cruise itinerary.

According to the original episode, a tropical storm approaching Hawaii forced Norwegian Cruise Line to change two sailings involving two ships: Pride of America and Norwegian Spirit.

Pride of America Returns to Honolulu Early

Pride of America, which operates year-round Hawaiian cruises from Honolulu, headed back to Honolulu earlier than originally planned.

Norwegian Spirit Cancels Two Hawaiian Ports

Meanwhile, Norwegian Spirit canceled its final two Hawaii port calls and also headed toward Honolulu early.

The changes came as the storm was strengthening and threatening portions of Hawaii with potentially dangerous conditions, including:

  • Strong winds
  • Heavy rainfall
  • Flooding
  • Dangerous surf
  • Changing port conditions

Missing a port is disappointing, especially when you have been dreaming about that stop for months.

You may have booked an excursion.

You may have researched the perfect beach.

You may already know where your first Mai Tai is supposed to come from.

But this is exactly why cruise itineraries are never guaranteed.

The captain is not sitting on the bridge thinking:

“You know what would be fun today? Disappointing 3,000 people.”

When severe weather starts knocking on the door, the correct response is:

We’re going the other way.

And that is exactly what you want the people responsible for your safety to do.

Mother Nature does not accept reservations.

Carnival Has a New Plan for All Those Shoes Guests Leave Behind

Now, from storm trackers to sneaker trackers.

Carnival Cruise Line apparently has one question:

Why do y’all keep leaving your shoes on the ship?

Carnival has partnered with Sneaker Impact, an organization that collects used footwear for reuse and recycling.

Under the program, Sneaker Impact can collect unclaimed shoes left aboard Carnival ships and send them to its facility in Miami instead of simply discarding them.

Guests and crew members may also donate footwear.

And I actually love this idea.

Because somewhere, somebody gets home from their cruise, opens the suitcase, looks around the bedroom, and suddenly yells:

“WHERE ARE MY CROCS?!”

Baby…

Your Crocs may have moved on.

They found purpose.

They’re healing.

Let them go.

Turning Lost-and-Found Into Something Useful

Jokes aside, the partnership provides another potential destination for shoes that might otherwise end up in a landfill.

It also gives guests and crew an opportunity to intentionally donate footwear they no longer need.

So before you leave your cabin on debarkation morning:

  • Check the safe.
  • Check the bathroom.
  • Look under the bed.
  • Check the closet.
  • Check behind the curtains.
  • And please…

American Airlines Flight Returns Safely After Bird Strike

Now let’s head from the cruise terminal to the airport.

This next story sounds frightening—and it was certainly dramatic—but the most important part is that everyone landed safely.

According to the episode, American Airlines Flight 1760 departed Myrtle Beach International Airport in South Carolina for Charlotte, North Carolina.

Shortly after takeoff, the Boeing 737-800 reportedly encountered birds.

Video captured by passengers and people on the ground showed bursts of flames coming from the aircraft’s left engine.

The pilots declared an emergency and returned to Myrtle Beach.

The Most Important Detail: The Plane Landed Safely

The aircraft landed safely, and no injuries were reported.

American Airlines then took the plane out of service for inspection, while passengers were moved to another aircraft to continue their journey to Charlotte.

Now imagine looking out the airplane window and seeing flames.

I do not care how calm the flight attendants look.

Internally, I am already holding a full emergency church service in seat 17A.

“Lord, remember when I said I was going to stop ordering shoes online? TODAY IS THE DAY!”

But incidents like this also demonstrate why pilots and cabin crews train repeatedly for emergencies.

The pilots:

  • Recognized the problem
  • Declared an emergency
  • Returned to the airport
  • Landed safely

That is the part of the story worth remembering.

🌴 Travel Tip of the Day: Severe Weather Can Rewrite Your Cruise

Today’s Hawaii story offers a travel lesson every cruiser should remember:

Do not rely solely on the itinerary you printed months before departure.

When severe weather threatens a cruise destination, plans can change quickly.

Ports may change.

Arrival and departure times may change.

Excursions may change.

Sometimes an entire itinerary may need adjustment.

Before and during your cruise, regularly check:

  • Your cruise line’s mobile app
  • Email notifications
  • Text alerts
  • Official cruise-line announcements
  • Communications from your travel advisor

Independent Excursions Require Extra Attention

If you booked an excursion independently rather than through the cruise line, understand the company’s cancellation and refund policy before you leave home.

Ask what happens if:

  • The cruise ship skips the port

  • The ship arrives too late for the excursion

Carnival Cruise Line Appoints Its First Female Staff Captain

Carnival Cruise Line has made maritime history.

On August 5, Daniella Gargiulo was officially appointed Carnival’s first female staff captain during a ceremony aboard Carnival Adventure as the ship returned to Sydney from the South Pacific.

As staff captain, Gargiulo serves as the captain’s second-in-command and helps oversee important areas such as:

  • Maritime operations
  • Navigation and bridge operations
  • Shipboard safety procedures
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Officer and crew leadership

In other words, she is not standing on the bridge asking everybody where they want to go for lunch.

She is helping run the ship.

From Deck Cadet to Staff Captain

Gargiulo began her Carnival career as a deck cadet in 2013 and worked her way through the ranks during approximately 13 years of service.

Her interest in maritime life began much earlier. At age 14, she enrolled in nautical school in Italy.

Her promotion is significant because women remain underrepresented in senior maritime positions. Visible leadership appointments can show future captains, deck officers, engineers, and other maritime professionals that there are more paths available to them.

Congratulations, Staff Captain Gargiulo. 🎉

MSC Cruises Is Opening a New Beach Destination in the Dominican Republic

MSC Cruises is preparing to give travelers another reason to put the Dominican Republic on their cruise wish list.

Catalina Sugar Beach is scheduled to begin welcoming guests in November 2026.

The destination is located on Catalina Island off the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic near La Romana.

According to the transcript, the enhanced beach experience is being developed through a partnership involving MSC Group and Casa de Campo Resorts & Villas.

What Travelers Can Expect at Catalina Sugar Beach

Plans include:

  • An open-air beach pavilion
  • International cuisine

Basically, MSC looked at a gorgeous Caribbean beach and asked:

MSC Expands Its Dominican Republic Presence

The new beach destination fits into MSC’s broader growth in the region.

MSC is also preparing for year-round Southern Caribbean sailings aboard MSC Opera from La Romana beginning in November.

A polished private-style beach experience could make Dominican Republic itineraries even more attractive for travelers who want a relatively easy beach day with organized amenities.

Just remember: Catalina Sugar Beach is the destination’s name.

It is not permission to eat five desserts before boarding the tender.

Port Canaveral Begins a $95 Million Cruise Terminal Makeover

One of Florida’s busiest cruise ports is getting even bigger.

Port Canaveral officially began construction on a $95 million expansion and renovation of Cruise Terminal 10 on August 6.

The project is expected to be completed in November 2027.

When finished, Terminal 10 is expected to total more than 145,000 square feet, making it approximately 30% larger than the existing facility.

Built for Bigger Ships and More Passengers

The expanded terminal is being designed to accommodate some of the cruise industry’s largest vessels, including ships carrying as many as 6,700 passengers.

Yes.

6,700 passengers.

That is a small town arriving at security with rolling luggage.

Planned improvements include:

  • Expanded security areas
  • Larger baggage-processing spaces
  • New elevators
  • New escalators
  • Updated signage
  • Upgraded climate-control systems
  • More natural light
  • Colorful artwork
  • A new glass façade

The project is part of a much larger improvement program covering facilities and technology throughout Port Canaveral.

Norwegian Getaway Will Spend Embarkation Night Docked in Miami

Passengers sailing aboard Norwegian Getaway on August 24 will have an unusual first night onboard.

Guests should still arrive at PortMiami during their originally assigned embarkation times.

However, instead of departing at the originally scheduled 4 p.m. sail-away, the ship is expected to remain docked overnight and depart at approximately 3 a.m. the following morning.
