Carnival Cruise Line Appoints Its First Female Staff Captain

Carnival Cruise Line has made maritime history.

On August 5, Daniella Gargiulo was officially appointed Carnival’s first female staff captain during a ceremony aboard Carnival Adventure as the ship returned to Sydney from the South Pacific.

As staff captain, Gargiulo serves as the captain’s second-in-command and helps oversee important areas such as:

  • Maritime operations
  • Navigation and bridge operations
  • Shipboard safety procedures
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Officer and crew leadership

In other words, she is not standing on the bridge asking everybody where they want to go for lunch.

She is helping run the ship.

From Deck Cadet to Staff Captain

Gargiulo began her Carnival career as a deck cadet in 2013 and worked her way through the ranks during approximately 13 years of service.

Her interest in maritime life began much earlier. At age 14, she enrolled in nautical school in Italy.

Her promotion is significant because women remain underrepresented in senior maritime positions. Visible leadership appointments can show future captains, deck officers, engineers, and other maritime professionals that there are more paths available to them.

MSC Cruises Is Opening a New Beach Destination in the Dominican Republic

MSC Cruises is preparing to give travelers another reason to put the Dominican Republic on their cruise wish list.

Catalina Sugar Beach is scheduled to begin welcoming guests in November 2026.

The destination is located on Catalina Island off the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic near La Romana.

According to the transcript, the enhanced beach experience is being developed through a partnership involving MSC Group and Casa de Campo Resorts & Villas.

What Travelers Can Expect at Catalina Sugar Beach

Plans include:

  • International cuisine

MSC Expands Its Dominican Republic Presence

The new beach destination fits into MSC’s broader growth in the region.

MSC is also preparing for year-round Southern Caribbean sailings aboard MSC Opera from La Romana beginning in November.

A polished private-style beach experience could make Dominican Republic itineraries even more attractive for travelers who want a relatively easy beach day with organized amenities.

Just remember: Catalina Sugar Beach is the destination’s name.

It is not permission to eat five desserts before boarding the tender.

Port Canaveral Begins a $95 Million Cruise Terminal Makeover

One of Florida’s busiest cruise ports is getting even bigger.

Port Canaveral officially began construction on a $95 million expansion and renovation of Cruise Terminal 10 on August 6.

The project is expected to be completed in November 2027.

When finished, Terminal 10 is expected to total more than 145,000 square feet, making it approximately 30% larger than the existing facility.

Built for Bigger Ships and More Passengers

The expanded terminal is being designed to accommodate some of the cruise industry’s largest vessels, including ships carrying as many as 6,700 passengers.

Yes.

6,700 passengers.

That is a small town arriving at security with rolling luggage.

Planned improvements include:

  • Expanded security areas
  • Larger baggage-processing spaces
  • New elevators
  • New escalators
  • Updated signage
  • Upgraded climate-control systems
  • More natural light
  • Colorful artwork
  • A new glass façade

The project is part of a much larger improvement program covering facilities and technology throughout Port Canaveral.

Why the Expansion Matters

Cruise ships are becoming larger, and ports need enough space to efficiently process thousands of arriving and departing travelers.

For passengers, upgraded terminals can potentially mean:

  • Better climate control
  • More comfortable waiting areas

So the next time everything at Port Canaveral looks shiny and new, remember: somebody spent $95 million so you could still walk inside and ask,

Norwegian Getaway Will Spend Embarkation Night Docked in Miami

Passengers sailing aboard Norwegian Getaway on August 24 will have an unusual first night onboard.

Guests should still arrive at PortMiami during their originally assigned embarkation times.

However, instead of departing at the originally scheduled 4 p.m. sail-away, the ship is expected to remain docked overnight and depart at approximately 3 a.m. the following morning.

The overnight stay is connected to an environmental initiative intended to help reduce emissions and support cleaner port operations.

Your Boarding Time Is Not Changing

This is the most important part for passengers:

A delayed departure does not necessarily mean delayed boarding.

Guests should still follow their assigned terminal arrival times unless Norwegian specifically tells them otherwise.

And once you board, according to the transcript, you will not be permitted to get off the ship again to explore Miami.

So please do not:

  1. Board the ship.
  2. Unpack your pajamas.
  3. Find your cabin.
  4. Order a cocktail.
  5. Announce that you are heading back to South Beach for dinner.

Your evening plans have changed.

Instead, passengers can begin enjoying the ship while taking in a bonus nighttime view of Miami.

Delayed Departure Does Not Always Mean Delayed Check-In

When a cruise line announces a delayed sail-away, read the entire notice carefully.

Do not assume your embarkation time has changed.

Before leaving home or your hotel, confirm:

  • Your assigned terminal arrival time
  • The final boarding deadline
  • The ship’s revised departure time
  • Whether passengers may leave after boarding
  • Whether restaurants will operate normally
  • Whether entertainment will begin as scheduled

Do not rely on somebody saying:

“I think they told us to come later.”

Guests aboard Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas received an unexpected surprise when water began pouring through the ceiling and flooding their cabin.

And no, this was not the upgraded in-room waterfall package.

The incident was another reminder that maintenance problems can happen even aboard large, modern cruise ships. When water, plumbing or electrical issues affect a cabin, passengers should report the problem immediately rather than attempting to manage it alone.

Do not simply place towels on the floor and hope the cabin miraculously heals overnight. Report the problem before your suitcase becomes part of the ship’s aquatic ecosystem.

What to Do When a Cabin Problem Occurs

Passengers should:

  • Contact Guest Services immediately.
  • Take photographs and videos of the problem.
  • Record the date and time the issue began.
  • Document damage to clothing, luggage or personal items.
  • Write down the names of crew members or representatives they speak with.
  • Request written confirmation that the complaint was reported.
  • Save receipts for replacement items or necessary purchases.
  • Review their travel-insurance coverage.

Reporting the problem quickly gives the ship an opportunity to investigate, complete repairs, and address any damage while the passenger is still onboard.

Celebrity Cruises Raises Daily Gratuities

Celebrity Cruises has increased its recommended daily gratuities across all stateroom categories.

Guests staying in interior, ocean-view and veranda cabins will now pay $19.50 per person, per day, up from $18.

An increase of $1.50 per person may not sound dramatic at first. However, multiply it by two or three guests and then add a seven-, ten- or fourteen-night itinerary, and suddenly the calculator wants to join the vacation.

Gratuities support crew members who provide services throughout the ship, including many employees passengers may rarely—or never—meet directly.

Calculate the Complete Cruise Cost

Cruisers should include gratuities when comparing the true cost of a vacation.

The advertised fare may say, “Come aboard,” while gratuities, taxes, Wi-Fi and beverage packages say, “Move out the way—we’re coming too.”

Before booking, calculate:

  • Cruise fare
  • Taxes and port fees
  • Daily gratuities
  • Travel protection
  • Wi-Fi
  • Beverage packages
  • Specialty dining
  • Shore excursions
  • Transportation
  • Pre- or post-cruise hotels

Carnival Introduces Complimentary Nacho Bowls

Now for the most important breaking snack news of the day.

Carnival Cruise Line is adding complimentary nacho bowls as a late-afternoon snack and plans to expand the offering across more ships in its fleet.

Finally, a cruise announcement addressing one of society’s most urgent questions:

What are passengers supposed to eat between lunch and dinner?

Yes, you already had breakfast, second breakfast, lunch, soft-serve ice cream and pizza. But when 4 p.m. arrives, the stomach can still issue an amber food alert.

Royal Caribbean Group has major ambitions for Celebrity River Cruises.

Executives have described the concept as taking the modern look and feel of a Celebrity Edge-class ship and adapting it for Europe’s rivers.

Picture the Danube with contemporary design, premium drinks and someone quietly explaining how the Infinite Veranda works.

The company expects interest from both loyal Celebrity guests and Royal Caribbean travelers who want to experience river cruising without giving up the comfort of a familiar brand.

Celebrity also expects the product to command premium pricing.

That should surprise absolutely no one. You cannot place an Edge-class-inspired experience beside a medieval castle and expect the fare to arrive wearing flip-flops and Crocs.

Carnival is also introducing Fetaccine, a restaurant blending Italian favorites with Greek-inspired dishes, along with Le Bistro Musicale, a French dining experience exclusive to Carnival Festivale.

Carnival is also refreshing dining across the fleet. Guests can look forward to updated main dining room menus, Lido Marketplace improvements, a new Lido Family Menu, Bagels @ Sea, revamped Chef’s Table dinners, mobile coffee ordering, and faster Express Dining options.

RelaxAway at Half Moon Cay Gets a Fresh New Look

Carnival is also expanding its private destination experience at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay. The refreshed south-side beach area now includes more reservable cabanas and daybeds, upgraded food and beverage options, a scenic Papaya Pathway, and tram service to help guests get around more easily.

One of the biggest upgrades is the addition of a pier that allows newer ships to dock. That means smoother arrivals and more time for guests to enjoy the island.

Private destinations are becoming a major part of the cruise experience, and this update makes Half Moon Cay even more appealing for beach lovers.

Carnival Magic and Carnival Glory Receive Fresh Enhancements

Carnival Magic has returned to Miami after an extensive dry dock with several upgrades. Guests will notice a refreshed casino and arcade, a redesigned Lido restaurant, an updated WaterWorks splash zone, a new mini-golf course, renovated Cloud 9 Spa areas, refreshed retail spaces, and a new bow crest.

Carnival Glory also received enhancements before returning to short Bahamian cruises from Port Canaveral. Updates include a new non-smoking casino and a Club O2 lounge for teens.

This new terminal replaces older 1960s-era facilities and features 41,500 square feet of enclosed space, shore-power capability, and convenient access near the railroad depot. That location makes it easier for guests to connect between Seward and Anchorage.

For Alaska cruisers, this is great news. The embarkation and debarkation experience can make a big difference, especially when travelers are connecting to land tours, trains, or flights.

Royal Caribbean Adds La Romana to Rhapsody of the Seas
