Carnival Cruise Line Appoints Its First Female Staff Captain

Carnival Cruise Line has made maritime history.

On August 5, Daniella Gargiulo was officially appointed Carnival’s first female staff captain during a ceremony aboard Carnival Adventure as the ship returned to Sydney from the South Pacific.

As staff captain, Gargiulo serves as the captain’s second-in-command and helps oversee important areas such as:

  • Maritime operations
  • Navigation and bridge operations
  • Shipboard safety procedures
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Officer and crew leadership

In other words, she is not standing on the bridge asking everybody where they want to go for lunch.

She is helping run the ship.

From Deck Cadet to Staff Captain

Gargiulo began her Carnival career as a deck cadet in 2013 and worked her way through the ranks during approximately 13 years of service.

Her interest in maritime life began much earlier. At age 14, she enrolled in nautical school in Italy.

Her promotion is significant because women remain underrepresented in senior maritime positions. Visible leadership appointments can show future captains, deck officers, engineers, and other maritime professionals that there are more paths available to them.

Congratulations, Staff Captain Gargiulo. 🎉

May your future include calm seas, cooperative passengers, and absolutely nobody asking whether you really know how to park the ship.

MSC Cruises Is Opening a New Beach Destination in the Dominican Republic

MSC Cruises is preparing to give travelers another reason to put the Dominican Republic on their cruise wish list.

Catalina Sugar Beach is scheduled to begin welcoming guests in November 2026.

The destination is located on Catalina Island off the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic near La Romana.

According to the transcript, the enhanced beach experience is being developed through a partnership involving MSC Group and Casa de Campo Resorts & Villas.

What Travelers Can Expect at Catalina Sugar Beach

Plans include:

  • An open-air beach pavilion
  • International cuisine
  • Dominican dishes
  • Tropical drinks
  • Shaded seating areas
  • Cabanas
  • Daybeds
  • Water-sport rentals
  • Showers
  • Restrooms
  • Upgraded changing facilities

Basically, MSC looked at a gorgeous Caribbean beach and asked:

“This is beautiful—but where are the cabanas and frozen beverages?”

MSC Expands Its Dominican Republic Presence

The new beach destination fits into MSC’s broader growth in the region.

MSC is also preparing for year-round Southern Caribbean sailings aboard MSC Opera from La Romana beginning in November.

A polished private-style beach experience could make Dominican Republic itineraries even more attractive for travelers who want a relatively easy beach day with organized amenities.

Just remember: Catalina Sugar Beach is the destination’s name.

It is not permission to eat five desserts before boarding the tender.

Port Canaveral Begins a $95 Million Cruise Terminal Makeover

One of Florida’s busiest cruise ports is getting even bigger.

Port Canaveral officially began construction on a $95 million expansion and renovation of Cruise Terminal 10 on August 6.

The project is expected to be completed in November 2027.

When finished, Terminal 10 is expected to total more than 145,000 square feet, making it approximately 30% larger than the existing facility.

Built for Bigger Ships and More Passengers

The expanded terminal is being designed to accommodate some of the cruise industry’s largest vessels, including ships carrying as many as 6,700 passengers.

Yes.

6,700 passengers.

That is a small town arriving at security with rolling luggage.

Planned improvements include:

  • Expanded security areas
  • Larger baggage-processing spaces
  • New elevators
  • New escalators
  • Updated signage
  • Upgraded climate-control systems
  • More natural light
  • Colorful artwork
  • A new glass façade

The project is part of a much larger improvement program covering facilities and technology throughout Port Canaveral.

In addition to cosmetic enhancements and a new look and feel with updated lighting, artwork and signage, Cruise Terminal 10 will feature larger security screening and luggage laydown areas. (Credit: Canaveral Port Authority)

Why the Expansion Matters

Cruise ships are becoming larger, and ports need enough space to efficiently process thousands of arriving and departing travelers.

For passengers, upgraded terminals can potentially mean:

  • Smoother embarkation
  • Faster baggage handling
  • More efficient security processing
  • Improved accessibility
  • Better climate control
  • More comfortable waiting areas

So the next time everything at Port Canaveral looks shiny and new, remember: somebody spent $95 million so you could still walk inside and ask,

“Which line am I supposed to stand in?”

Norwegian Getaway Will Spend Embarkation Night Docked in Miami

Passengers sailing aboard Norwegian Getaway on August 24 will have an unusual first night onboard.

Guests should still arrive at PortMiami during their originally assigned embarkation times.

However, instead of departing at the originally scheduled 4 p.m. sail-away, the ship is expected to remain docked overnight and depart at approximately 3 a.m. the following morning.

The overnight stay is connected to an environmental initiative intended to help reduce emissions and support cleaner port operations.

Your Boarding Time Is Not Changing

This is the most important part for passengers:

A delayed departure does not necessarily mean delayed boarding.

Guests should still follow their assigned terminal arrival times unless Norwegian specifically tells them otherwise.

And once you board, according to the transcript, you will not be permitted to get off the ship again to explore Miami.

So please do not:

  1. Board the ship.
  2. Unpack your pajamas.
  3. Find your cabin.
  4. Order a cocktail.
  5. Announce that you are heading back to South Beach for dinner.

Your evening plans have changed.

Instead, passengers can begin enjoying the ship while taking in a bonus nighttime view of Miami.

The vacation officially starts when you board—even if the ship is still tied to the pier.

Delayed Departure Does Not Always Mean Delayed Check-In

When a cruise line announces a delayed sail-away, read the entire notice carefully.

Do not assume your embarkation time has changed.

Before leaving home or your hotel, confirm:

  • Your assigned terminal arrival time
  • The final boarding deadline
  • The ship’s revised departure time
  • Whether passengers may leave after boarding
  • Whether restaurants will operate normally
  • Whether entertainment will begin as scheduled
  • Whether any ports have changed
  • Whether shore excursions are affected
  • Whether arrival times at subsequent ports have changed

Take a screenshot of the cruise line’s notice and share it with everyone traveling in your party.

Do not rely on somebody saying:

“I think they told us to come later.”

“I think” has caused more vacation confusion than expired passports and airport breakfast cocktails combined.

The Best Cities for a Pre-Cruise or Post-Cruise Stay—By Traveler Type

A cruise vacation does not have to begin at the gangway—or end when you step off the ship.

Adding a pre-cruise or post-cruise stay gives travelers time to explore another destination, recover from a long flight, and begin or end their vacation at a more relaxed pace. It can also protect your trip from missed connections, flight delays and weather disruptions.

The right cruise-city extension, however, depends on who is traveling. A family with young children may want theme parks and interactive attractions, while a couple may prefer romantic restaurants and historic neighborhoods. Seniors might prioritize convenience, accessible transportation, and a comfortable pace.

Here are some of the best cities for a pre-cruise or post-cruise stay, organized by traveler type.

Best Pre-Cruise Cities for Families

Orlando and Port Canaveral, Florida

Best for: Theme parks, beaches and multigenerational vacations
Recommended stay: Two to four nights

For families sailing from Port Canaveral, Orlando can transform a cruise into a complete land-and-sea vacation.

Families can visit Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, LEGOLAND Florida or Kennedy Space Center before heading to the ship. Those who prefer a quieter beginning can spend one or two nights in Cocoa Beach or near Port Canaveral.

A practical itinerary is to enjoy several nights in Orlando and then move closer to the cruise terminal for the final night. That provides a comfortable buffer before embarkation day.

Begin a family cruise vacation with an out-of-this-world visit to Florida’s Space Coast. (AI-Generated Image)

Miami, Florida

Best for: Families wanting beaches and city attractions
Recommended stay: Two nights

Miami offers families a combination of beaches, cultural neighborhoods, museums, waterfront dining and boat tours.

Popular family-friendly choices include the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, Miami Children’s Museum, Zoo Miami and a relaxing afternoon on Miami Beach. Bayside Marketplace, one of the attractions closest to PortMiami, offers dining, shopping and sightseeing tours along the waterfront

A Miami boat tour lets families enjoy the skyline before setting sail. (AI-Generated Image)

Vancouver, British Columbia

Best for: Families taking an Alaska cruise
Recommended stay: Two or three nights

Vancouver is an excellent starting point for an Alaska cruise because the city offers both outdoor recreation and family attractions.

Stanley Park, Granville Island, FlyOver Canada and the waterfront can comfortably fill several days. Canada Place is located in downtown Vancouver and includes the city’s cruise terminal, FlyOver Canada, a hotel and other visitor facilities.

Families staying downtown may be able to enjoy sightseeing without renting a car.

Vancouver combines a beautiful waterfront, mountain scenery and convenient access to Alaska cruises. (AI-Generated Image)

Best Cities for Couples

Barcelona, Spain

Best for: Romance, food, architecture and Mediterranean cruises
Recommended stay: Three nights

Barcelona is one of the most versatile cruise-extension cities in Europe.

Couples can tour the Sagrada Família, admire Gaudí’s architecture, wander through the Gothic Quarter, enjoy tapas and spend an afternoon near the Mediterranean. Barcelona also has transportation connections between its cruise facilities and the city. Terminals at the Adossat wharf are served by the T-3 Portbus, which connects passengers with city transportation near the Columbus Monument area.

For a romantic evening, reserve a rooftop dinner or sunset experience overlooking the city.

Barcelona offers Mediterranean flavors, remarkable architecture and romantic evenings before or after a cruise. (AI-Generated Image)

Rome, Italy

Best for: History, romance and bucket-list sightseeing
Recommended stay: Three or four nights

Rome gives couples the opportunity to turn a Mediterranean cruise into a deeper cultural vacation.

Spend several days exploring the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Vatican Museums, Trevi Fountain and the city’s beautiful piazzas. In the evening, slow down with dinner in Trastevere or a walk near the Spanish Steps.

Cruises advertised as departing from Rome generally sail from Civitavecchia, not central Rome. Travelers should therefore arrange transportation carefully and avoid planning a last-minute transfer to the ship.

Extend a Mediterranean cruise with several unforgettable days among the landmarks of Rome. (AI-Generatged Image)

Venice, Italy

Best for: Atmosphere, anniversaries and intimate escapes
Recommended stay: Two or three nights

Venice is especially appealing for couples celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary or milestone trip.

Canal views, historic architecture, small restaurants and evening walks create a memorable atmosphere. However, Venice requires more logistical planning than many cruise cities. Bridges, steps, cobblestones and water transportation can make moving luggage challenging.

A post-cruise stay may be the most relaxing option because couples can explore without worrying about reaching the ship on time.

Venice adds timeless romance to the beginning or end of a European cruise. (AI-Generated Image)

Best Cities for Adult Friends and Celebration Groups

Miami, Florida

Best for: Birthdays, friends’ trips and nightlife
Recommended stay: Two or three nights

Miami is an easy choice for adults who want the celebration to begin before boarding.

Groups can choose between the nightlife and Art Deco architecture of South Beach, the restaurants and rooftop lounges of Brickell, the murals of Wynwood or the culture and food of Little Havana. PortMiami and the local tourism bureau specifically promote the city as a destination for pre- and post-cruise experiences.

Miami gives celebration groups one more reason to start the party before embarkation. (AI-Generated Image)

New Orleans, Louisiana

Best for: Food, music and milestone celebrations
Recommended stay: Two or three nights

New Orleans is one of the best cruise cities for adult groups interested in live entertainment and memorable meals.

Before sailing, travelers can listen to jazz, explore the French Quarter, take a food tour, visit the National WWII Museum or enjoy Creole and Cajun cuisine. The city works particularly well for birthday groups, reunions and couples traveling together.

Allow enough time to experience neighborhoods outside Bourbon Street, including the Garden District, Marigny and Frenchmen Street.

Live music and Louisiana cuisine make New Orleans a lively addition to a cruise vacation. (AI-Generated Images)

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Best for: Tropical culture, history and nightlife
Recommended stay: Two or three nights

San Juan combines the energy of a Caribbean destination with the history and attractions of a major city.

Groups can explore colorful Old San Juan, visit Castillo San Felipe del Morro, try local cuisine and enjoy waterfront nightlife. Depending on the cruise terminal and hotel location, many attractions may be just a short ride away.

Old San Juan blends Caribbean color, historic forts and vibrant nightlife. (AI-Generated Images)

Best Cities for Seniors and Relaxed-Pace Travelers

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Best for: Convenience, beaches and an easy embarkation
Recommended stay: One or two nights

Fort Lauderdale is an excellent option for travelers who prefer a calmer alternative to Miami.

Port Everglades, the airport, beach-area hotels and Las Olas Boulevard are relatively close to one another. Water-taxi rides, waterfront restaurants and organized sightseeing tours allow visitors to enjoy the city without maintaining an overly demanding itinerary.

Staying near 17th Street can place travelers close to restaurants, stores and the cruise port.

Fort Lauderdale offers a slower-paced waterfront stay before boarding at Port Everglades. (AI-Generated Images)

Vancouver, British Columbia

Best for: Scenic surroundings and organized sightseeing
Recommended stay: Two or three nights

Vancouver offers waterfront hotels, public transportation, gardens and a wide selection of guided tours.

Travelers can choose a gentle itinerary featuring Stanley Park, Granville Island and the waterfront, or take a scenic day trip. Because Canada Place is located in the downtown harbor area, some travelers can stay close to the terminal and simplify embarkation morning

Vancouver’s scenic waterfront, easy transportation, and downtown cruise terminal make it a relaxing choice for a two- or three-night pre-cruise stay. (AI-Generated Image)

Southampton and London, England

Best for: British Isles and Northern European cruises
Recommended stay: One night in Southampton or three to four nights with London

Travelers sailing from Southampton have two main choices.

Those who value simplicity can stay in Southampton the night before the cruise. Travelers who want a fuller vacation can spend several nights in London before transferring to Southampton.

Seniors and travelers with mobility considerations should avoid scheduling their London-to-Southampton transfer too close to embarkation.

A London stay can add history and culture to a cruise departing from Southampton. (AI-Generated Image)

Best Cities for Active and Outdoor Travelers

Vancouver, British Columbia

Best for: Cycling, hiking and mountain scenery
Recommended stay: Three nights

Vancouver is one of the best cruise cities for travelers who enjoy combining urban attractions with nature.

Options include cycling through Stanley Park, hiking on the North Shore, walking the seawall, or taking a day trip to Whistler. The city is particularly well suited to an Alaska cruise because it introduces travelers to the scenery and outdoor atmosphere they will encounter during the voyage.

(AI-Generated Image)

Seattle, Washington

Best for: Markets, museums and Pacific Northwest adventures
Recommended stay: Two or three nights

Seattle offers Pike Place Market, the Space Needle, Chihuly Garden and Glass, museums, waterfront attractions and ferry rides.

With additional time, active travelers can visit Mount Rainier, explore the Olympic Peninsula or add a scenic rail journey.

(AI-Generated Image)

Anchorage or Seward, Alaska

Best for: Wildlife, glaciers and land-and-sea adventures
Recommended stay: At least three nights

Travelers beginning or ending an Alaska cruise may want to extend the journey into the state’s interior.

Wildlife excursions, glacier tours, scenic rail trips and national-park visits can be extraordinary, but distances are significant. Build in enough time rather than trying to fit an ambitious Alaska itinerary into one or two days.

(AI-Generated Image)

Best Cities for History and Culture Lovers

Rome, Italy

Few cruise cities can match Rome’s concentration of ancient sites, museums, churches and historic neighborhoods.

Three or four nights allow travelers to explore at a more comfortable pace instead of attempting to see everything during a single port call.

(AI-Generated Image)

Athens, Greece

Best for: Archaeology and Greek culture
Recommended stay: Two or three nights

Athens is an ideal extension for cruises sailing from Piraeus.

Visitors can tour the Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, Ancient Agora and Plaka before enjoying Greek cuisine in the evening. Staying in the city for several nights provides a more complete experience than seeing Athens during a rushed shore excursion.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona appeals to travelers who enjoy architecture, art, markets and neighborhood exploration.

The city’s transportation network can help independent travelers move between major attractions, and multi-day public-transport passes are available.

Photo Credits: Holland America Cruise Line

Best Cities for Solo Travelers

Barcelona

Barcelona’s public transportation, markets, guided walking tours and central neighborhoods make it a strong choice for independent travelers.

Solo cruisers can join food tours, architecture tours or small-group excursions while still having plenty of opportunities to explore on their own.

A pre-cruise stay gives solo travelers time to explore, meet others, and settle into vacation mode. (AI-Generated Image)

Vancouver

Vancouver is a comfortable option for first-time solo travelers because many major attractions are concentrated around downtown and the waterfront.

Organized sightseeing, reliable transportation, and the central location of Canada Place can make the logistics manageable.

Vancouver’s walkable waterfront, reliable transportation, and convenient Canada Place cruise terminal make it an easy and welcoming choice for first-time solo cruisers. (AI-Generated Image)

Miami

Miami is an energetic destination for solo travelers who enjoy food tours, beaches, museums and social experiences.

Hotel location matters. A slightly more expensive hotel in a well-connected neighborhood may provide a better experience than an isolated property chosen solely for its lower price.

Miami gives solo cruisers the perfect mix of culture, waterfront attractions, social experiences, and easy access to the ship—making the right neighborhood an important part of the adventure. (AI-Generated Image)

Best Cities for Luxury Travelers

Rome

Rome offers luxury hotels, private museum tours, chauffeured transfers, and elevated dining experiences.

Private Vatican access, after-hours tours and customized excursions can create a polished beginning or ending to a luxury cruise.

Barcelona

Luxury travelers can choose from boutique hotels, rooftop suites, private architecture tours and Michelin-recognized dining.

Nice or Monte Carlo

The French Riviera pairs particularly well with small-ship, yacht-style and luxury Mediterranean cruises.

Travelers can enjoy coastal scenery, designer shopping, private drivers and day trips to nearby villages.

Best Cities for Budget-Conscious Travelers

Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale may provide better value than Miami during certain travel periods, particularly for cruises departing from Port Everglades.

Compare the total cost rather than the hotel rate alone. A cheaper room located far from the airport or port may become expensive after adding transportation.

Tampa, Florida

Tampa offers Ybor City, museums, a riverwalk, and access to nearby Gulf Coast beaches.

It can be a good choice for travelers wanting a manageable one- or two-night extension without the pace or prices of a larger cruise hub.

Athens, Greece

Athens can offer comparatively good value for lodging, dining and transportation, particularly outside the busiest summer travel period.

Should You Stay Before or After the Cruise?

Choose a pre-cruise stay when:

  • You are flying to the departure city.
  • You are taking an international cruise.
  • Winter weather or tight airline connections could disrupt your arrival.
  • You want time to recover from jet lag.
  • You prefer beginning the vacation without rushing.

Arriving at least one day before a domestic cruise is strongly recommended. Two or more nights may be better for an international sailing or a destination you genuinely want to explore.

Choose a post-cruise stay when:

  • You want to take longer excursions away from the port.
  • You prefer exploring without worrying about missing the ship.
  • You want to avoid an early-morning airport rush.
  • Your cruise ends in a bucket-list destination.
  • You would like the vacation to wind down gradually.

A post-cruise stay is often the better time for train journeys, countryside tours or attractions located farther from the terminal.

Tips for Planning Your Cruise-City Extension

Choose a hotel based on the experience you want—not simply its distance from the cruise port. A port-area airport hotel may be practical for one night, while a downtown or beachfront hotel may be better for a longer stay.

Also consider:

  • Transportation between the airport, hotel and cruise terminal
  • Luggage storage after disembarkation
  • Hotel check-in and checkout times
  • Mobility and accessibility needs
  • Local holidays or major events
  • Travel insurance
  • Passport and entry requirements
  • Time needed to adjust after an overnight flight

For European sailings, confirm the ship’s actual terminal city. “Rome” cruises generally use Civitavecchia, “Athens” cruises typically use Piraeus, and some itineraries advertised with a famous nearby city may depart from a terminal located an hour or more away.

Final Thoughts

The best pre-cruise or post-cruise city is one that complements the people taking the trip.

Families may love combining Orlando with Port Canaveral. Couples can find romance in Barcelona or Rome. Adult groups can begin the celebration in Miami or New Orleans, while seniors may appreciate the convenience of Fort Lauderdale or Vancouver.

Whichever city you choose, adding a few days can turn a cruise into a richer and more memorable vacation. Instead of treating the embarkation city as merely a place to catch the ship, make it part of the journey.

Cruise News Roundup: Disney Wish Emergencies, Celebrity River Cruises, Alaska Expansion and JetBlue Fare Changes

Cruise and travel news brought a little bit of everything this week: emergency evacuations, temporary plumbing problems, ambitious river-cruise plans, more Alaska sailings and a redesigned airline fare system.

In this edition of Your Daily Boarding Call, we are unpacking the biggest headlines without charging an overweight baggage fee—or asking why your carry-on contains seven pairs of shoes for a four-night cruise. This article is adapted from the original Cruise Therapy Podcast transcript.

Grab your coffee or cocktail, your passport and your emotional-support luggage. Let’s get caught up.

Disney Wish Faces Two Urgent Medical Situations

The Disney Wish experienced two serious medical situations within two days, reminding travelers that even the most magical vacations may require real-world emergency planning.

Shortly after beginning its latest sailing, the ship returned to Port Canaveral because of a medical emergency. Later, another passenger required an emergency evacuation coordinated with the United States Coast Guard.

Public information about the passengers’ medical conditions remains limited. Our thoughts, prayers and get-well wishes are with the passengers and their families.

The incidents also demonstrate why cruise ships maintain onboard medical centers and work closely with Coast Guard personnel, emergency responders and medical teams on land.

A Disney vacation may be filled with magic, but medical emergencies still require real-life heroes—and sometimes those heroes arrive by helicopter instead of wearing an Iron Man suit.

Why Travel Insurance Matters

Medical care aboard a cruise ship can be expensive, and emergency transportation or evacuation may cost significantly more.

Before traveling, review whether your travel-protection plan includes:

  • Emergency medical care
  • Medical evacuation
  • Trip interruption
  • Transportation to an appropriate medical facility
  • Coverage for pre-existing conditions
  • Assistance for a traveling companion

Travelers should also carry their medications, medical information and insurance details in their hand luggage rather than placing them inside checked baggage.

Two medical situations aboard the Disney Wish highlighted the importance of emergency planning and travel protection. (AI-Generated Image)

Toilets Temporarily Become Unusable Aboard Oasis of the Seas

A plumbing repair temporarily affected toilets aboard Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas.

Cruise-ship toilets operate through a powerful vacuum system. When maintenance affects part of that network, several cabins or public areas may experience problems at the same time.

The disruption was described as temporary while crew members completed the necessary repairs.

Let’s give the ship’s engineering team some serious R-E-S-P-E-C-T. They were not merely tightening a loose nut. They were protecting peace, dignity and the sacred cruise-vacation right to flush.

What Passengers Should Do During a Plumbing Disruption

When a ship announces a temporary toilet or water issue:

  • Follow all crew instructions.
  • Avoid placing wipes, paper towels, or other objects in the toilet.
  • Use designated public restrooms when directed.
  • Report continued problems to Guest Services.
  • Keep the written notice or take a screenshot of any announcements.
  • Remain patient while the engineering team completes repairs.

Cruise-ship systems are complex, and repair teams often work behind the scenes to restore service as quickly as possible.

Celebrity Cruises Has Big Plans for Europe’s Rivers

Royal Caribbean Group has major ambitions for Celebrity River Cruises.

Executives have described the concept as taking the modern look and feel of a Celebrity Edge-class ship and adapting it for Europe’s rivers.

Picture the Danube with contemporary design, premium drinks and someone quietly explaining how the Infinite Veranda works.

The company expects interest from both loyal Celebrity guests and Royal Caribbean travelers who want to experience river cruising without giving up the comfort of a familiar brand.

Celebrity also expects the product to command premium pricing.

That should surprise absolutely no one. You cannot place an Edge-class-inspired experience beside a medieval castle and expect the fare to arrive wearing flip-flops and Crocs.

Why Ocean Cruisers May Try River Cruising

Celebrity’s entry into the market could introduce river cruising to travelers who enjoy modern ships but are interested in:

  • Smaller vessels
  • Longer stays in port
  • Historic cities and villages
  • Local food and wine
  • Inland European destinations
  • Easier access to cultural attractions
  • A more relaxed onboard atmosphere

River ships often dock close to the center of a destination, allowing guests to walk directly into town instead of beginning the day with a lengthy transfer.

MSC Poesia Will Return to Seattle for Another Alaska Season

MSC Cruises has opened sales for MSC Poesia’s summer 2028 Alaska season from Seattle.

The deployment will mark the ship’s third Alaska season, showing that MSC intends to remain a growing competitor in the region.

Travelers can expect the experiences that make Alaska cruising so popular:

  • Dramatic mountain scenery
  • Glaciers
  • Wildlife viewing
  • Waterfalls
  • Coastal communities
  • Cool, fresh air
  • Scenic days at sea

Seattle also provides a convenient departure point for many American travelers and creates opportunities for a pre- or post-cruise city stay.

What to Pack for Alaska

Alaska weather likes options.

Even when the calendar says summer, temperatures can change throughout the day. Pack clothing that can be layered and adjusted easily.

Consider bringing:

  • A waterproof jacket
  • Comfortable waterproof shoes
  • Lightweight sweaters
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • A warm hat
  • Gloves
  • Binoculars
  • A compact day bag
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses

Alaska may look at the calendar, see the word “summer” and decide it is merely a suggestion—not a requirement.

JetBlue Is Reorganizing Its Fare Options

Now, let’s taxi over to airline news.

JetBlue is changing the way passengers shop for flights as the airline prepares to introduce a domestic first-class experience called Blue First.

Travelers will first choose among cabin or experience categories such as:

  • Main
  • EvenMore
  • Blue First
  • Mint

They will then select a fare type based on the flexibility and benefits they want:

  • Base
  • Standard
  • Flex

Understanding the New Fare Levels

Base Fare

This will generally be the least expensive option. However, advance seat selection may not be included, and cancellations may involve additional fees or restrictions.

Standard Fare

This option is expected to include advance seat selection and no change fees, providing more flexibility than the lowest fare.

Flex Fare

Flex is designed for travelers who want greater refundability and fewer restrictions.

What Is Blue First?

Blue First is JetBlue’s upcoming domestic first-class product. It is expected to begin rolling out on aircraft and routes that do not already offer Mint.

Mint remains JetBlue’s premium business-class experience on select routes, featuring amenities such as:

  • Lie-flat seating
  • Elevated dining
  • Priority airport benefits
  • A more premium onboard experience

More choices can be helpful, but travelers should read the fare details carefully.

A premium seat purchased with a restrictive fare may not include every benefit your imagination has already unpacked.

Travel Tip of the Day: Compare the Restrictions, Not Just the Seat

When an airline launches a new fare system, do not choose a ticket based only on the seat or the advertised price.

Compare whether the fare includes:

  • Advance seat selection
  • Carry-on baggage
  • Checked luggage
  • Same-day changes
  • Flight changes
  • Refunds
  • Travel credits
  • Priority boarding
  • Cancellation flexibility

Take a screenshot of the fare benefits before completing your purchase, especially while an airline is transitioning to a new pricing system.

Keep the screenshot with your confirmation email in case the displayed benefits change, or you need to question a fee later.

Calculate the Complete Cost

The least expensive fare may not provide the best overall value.

Add the cost of:

  • Seat assignments
  • Checked bags
  • Carry-on bags
  • Change fees
  • Cancellation restrictions
  • Priority services

A base fare can look affordable until every decision you make afterward requires its own credit-card authorization.

Cruise itineraries are changing, ports are making headlines, and one upcoming ship is preparing to seriously test the strength of our vacation pants.

In this edition of Your Daily Boarding Call, we are looking at Royal Caribbean’s continued absence from Labadee, concerns affecting LGBTQ+ cruise travelers, a major expansion at Port Canaveral, MSC Cruises’ massive new chocolate experience and more.

Grab your coffee, passport, and emotional-support luggage. Let’s get caught up.

Royal Caribbean Removes Labadee From More 2027 Cruises

Royal Caribbean has removed Labadee, Haiti, from additional cruises scheduled through June 2027 due to ongoing security concerns.

Guests booked on affected sailings may receive a replacement port, a longer visit at another destination, an additional sea day, or revised arrival and departure times.

Safety must always come first, but travelers also want to know where their vacation is taking them. Nobody wants to board a cruise and discover that the destination is listed as “SURPRISE!!!”

What Booked Guests Should Do

Travelers should regularly check:

  • The email is connected to their reservation
  • The Royal Caribbean app
  • Messages from their travel advisor
  • Their Cruise Planner for excursion changes or refunds

Cruise itineraries are never guaranteed. Weather, port congestion, security concerns, and operational issues can all result in changes.

Cruise Therapy Takeaway: Do not become emotionally attached to a port until the ship is securely tied to the pier.

Royal Caribbean continues to adjust upcoming Labadee visits because of security concerns.

Port Restrictions Raise Concerns for LGBTQ+ Travelers

An Atlantis Events charter aboard Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady was denied permission to make scheduled port visits in Turkey and Egypt.

The ship was expected to visit Kuşadası, Istanbul, and Alexandria but was later rerouted to other destinations.

The situation has sparked an important conversation about traveler safety, discrimination, and whether cruise lines should continue to support destinations where certain guests may not feel welcome.

Travel should allow people to explore the world without fearing that their identity could prevent them from entering a destination.

Cruise lines and charter companies must now consider whether these ports can provide a safe and welcoming experience for all guests.

A vacation should be serving glamour, adventure, champagne and room service—not discrimination.

Turks and Caicos Responds to an Updated Travel Advisory

Turks and Caicos tourism officials are pushing back against an updated U.S. travel advisory, saying that some headlines may create unnecessary fear about the islands.

A Level 2 travel advisory does not automatically mean travelers should cancel their vacation. It means they should exercise increased caution and review the complete guidance before traveling.

What Travelers Should Keep in Mind

  • Stay aware of your surroundings.
  • Secure valuables and avoid displaying large amounts of cash.
  • Use reputable transportation providers.
  • Follow local laws.
  • Avoid isolated areas, especially at night.
  • Read the full advisory instead of relying only on headlines.

Cruise passengers visiting Grand Turk should also review current travel guidance before sailing.

Headlines can be dramatic. Sometimes they show up wearing more makeup than a performer on RuPaul’s Drag Race. Read the details before deciding whether a trip is right for you.

Travelers should review the complete advisory and make an informed decision rather than reacting only to headlines.

Port Canaveral Is Building a 13-Story Parking Garage

Port Canaveral is moving forward with a major expansion that includes improvements to Cruise Terminal 5 and a new 13-story parking garage near Cruise Terminal 6.

The terminal will receive additional seating, larger luggage areas, expanded security-screening facilities, and refreshed interiors.

The new garage is expected to add approximately 3,700 parking spaces.

Thirteen stories?

At that point, the garage needs a front desk, concierge, and complimentary breakfast.

A Simple Parking Tip for Cruisers

Before heading into the terminal:

  • Take a picture of your parking level.
  • Photograph the row or section number.
  • Include a nearby sign, elevator, or landmark in the photo.
  • Save the parking location on your phone.
  • Share the information with someone else in your group.

After seven days of desserts, frozen drinks and sea air, you may not remember where you parked—or what kind of car you own.

Port Canaveral’s new parking garage will add thousands of spaces for cruise passengers.

MSC World Asia Is Bringing a Massive Chocolate Experience to Sea

Let’s end the cruise news on a sweet note.

MSC World Asia will feature the largest Venchi chocolate experience at sea. The approximately 3,229-square-foot venue will include a chocolate boutique, café, gelateria, and lounge.

Guests can look forward to:

  • Handcrafted chocolates
  • Gelato
  • Chocolate beverages
  • Chocolate-making demonstrations
  • Exclusive flavors
  • Personalized chocolate bars
  • Gifts and treats to take home

Nothing says luxury vacation quite like designing your own chocolate bar while pretending the ship’s fitness center does not exist.

Is It Time for a Chocolate Package?

Forget the drink package. Chocolate lovers may be ready for:

  • Fifteen truffles per day
  • One personalized chocolate bar
  • Daily gelato
  • Wi-Fi for one device
  • Elastic-waistband gratuities included

MSC has not announced a chocolate package, but Cruise Therapy would like to put the idea into the universe.

Sinners Is Coming to Halloween Horror Nights

Universal Studios is bringing the Oscar-winning film Sinners to Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando and Hollywood.

The haunted-house experience will be inspired by the movie’s juke-joint setting and vampire storyline.

Guests will now be able to pay admission to run through a dark building while being chased by vampires—which sounds a lot like trying to escape a crowded airport baggage-claim area.

Before Attending Halloween Horror Nights

Keep these details in mind:

  • Halloween Horror Nights requires separate admission.
  • The event may be too intense for young children.
  • Universal does not recommend the event for children under 13.
  • Costumes and costume masks may be restricted.
  • Dates and availability may change.
  • A brave travel companion is highly recommended.

Choose someone fearless—or at least someone who runs more slowly than you.

Sinners joins the Halloween Horror Nights lineup in Orlando and Hollywood.

Travel Tip of the Day: Save Important Documents Offline

Before leaving home, take screenshots of important travel documents and itinerary information.

Save copies of:

  • Cruise confirmations
  • Boarding and check-in times
  • Flight information
  • Hotel names and addresses
  • Travel-insurance details
  • Airport-transfer information
  • Port transportation instructions
  • Emergency telephone numbers

Keep the information in a secure location and make sure it can be accessed from another device.

Travel apps are wonderful—until the Wi-Fi decides to go on vacation before you do.

Preparation may not be glamorous, but neither is standing at the terminal saying, “I know the confirmation number is in here somewhere.”

Key Takeaways

  • Royal Caribbean has removed Labadee from an additional 2027 itinerary.
  • Guests should monitor emails and cruise-line apps for changes.
  • Port restrictions involving an LGBTQ+ charter have raised concerns about safety and inclusion.
  • A Level 2 advisory means exercising increased caution, not automatically canceling a trip.
  • Port Canaveral is adding a 13-story parking garage with thousands of new spaces.
  • MSC World Asia will feature the largest Venchi chocolate experience at sea.
  • Sinners is joining Halloween Horror Nights.
  • Saving travel documents offline can reduce stress during a disruption.
