Carnival Conquest Diverts to Rescue a Stranded Mariner

Passengers aboard Carnival Conquest witnessed something you definitely won’t find listed in the daily program:

A real-life rescue at sea.

According to the episode, Carnival Conquest was sailing toward St. George’s, Grenada, when the ship received a distress relay involving a disabled sailing vessel.

The cruise ship changed course, reached the vessel, and safely brought the sole person aboard the sailboat onto Carnival Conquest.

Carnival said the rescued mariner remained in the care of the ship’s crew while the ship continued toward Grenada.

When someone is in trouble at sea, ships that can safely assist are expected to help.

Philadelphia’s New Cruise Terminal Is Officially Open

Philadelphia cruisers, your new terminal is ready.

The PhilaPort Cruise Terminal officially opened on August 7, following construction delays that pushed back its original spring opening.

Cruising returned to Philadelphia earlier this year after a roughly 15-year absence, with Norwegian Jewel operating week-long Bermuda itineraries.

Before the terminal was completed, passengers temporarily checked in at an airport-area hotel.

Now?

Guests can head straight to the new cruise facility.

Norwegian Pearl Will Take Over Later This Year

Norwegian Jewel is expected to finish its Philadelphia season in October.

Then Norwegian Pearl is scheduled to take over beginning in November with year-round itineraries that may include:

  • Bermuda
  • The Caribbean
  • Canada
  • New England

For travelers in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, this creates another option that may eliminate the need to fly to Florida just to board a cruise.

Philadelphia basically said:

“Why fly south when you can cruise from here?”

Give me a cheesesteak, a boarding pass, and someone to carry my luggage.

Galveston Could Be Getting a Fifth Cruise Terminal

Apparently, four cruise terminals are not enough for Texas.

The Galveston Wharves are negotiating with Royal Caribbean Group about developing a possible fifth cruise terminal at Pier 14.

The port board discussed preliminary terms on August 25, but delayed action on a non-binding agreement so both sides could continue working through financing, construction, and operational details.

Royal Caribbean already partnered with Galveston on the $125 million Pier 10 terminal, which opened in 2022.

And with Icon of the Seas scheduled to begin sailing from Galveston in August 2027, cruise growth in Texas is clearly not slowing down.

Potential Economic Impact

According to the episode, an economic study estimates a fifth terminal could create roughly 1,500 additional jobs.

Federal Agents Arrest 11 Cruise Ship Crew Members in Boston Operation

The next story is deeply disturbing.

Federal authorities arrested 11 cruise ship crew members in Boston during an operation conducted from August 14 through August 16.

According to the transcript, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations boarded two ships:

  • Holland America Line’s Volendam
  • Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Breakaway

Authorities said the operation targeted individuals allegedly involved with the receipt, possession, or distribution of child sexual abuse and exploitation material.

The enforcement action was part of a federal initiative called Operation Tidal Wave.

Agents reportedly searched crew living quarters and electronic devices before making arrests.

Important Legal Distinction

The episode emphasized an important point.

Some reports described the individuals as having been “charged,” but federal authorities said this specific Boston operation resulted in arrests and immigration removal proceedings, not federal criminal charges against all 11 individuals.

Both cruise lines said they were cooperating with authorities.

Deadly Nepal Flood Highlights Growing Glacier Risks

We end today’s news with a heartbreaking story from Nepal.

According to the episode, a catastrophic flash flood struck parts of the Himalayan country on Wednesday, August 26.

Early reports cited in the transcript said at least 273 people had been killed and more than 1,300 people were missing, including pilgrims and foreign visitors.

Scientists were still investigating exactly what caused the disaster.

Preliminary evidence discussed in the episode suggested that a large section of a glacier may have broken away, sending ice and rock downstream.

That debris may have temporarily blocked a river before an enormous surge of water burst through.

Tropical Storm Forces Norwegian Cruise Line to Change Two Hawaii Sailings

Mother Nature has rewritten another cruise itinerary.

According to the original episode, a tropical storm approaching Hawaii forced Norwegian Cruise Line to change two sailings involving two ships: Pride of America and Norwegian Spirit.

Pride of America Returns to Honolulu Early

Pride of America, which operates year-round Hawaiian cruises from Honolulu, headed back to Honolulu earlier than originally planned.

Norwegian Spirit Cancels Two Hawaiian Ports

Meanwhile, Norwegian Spirit canceled its final two Hawaii port calls and also headed toward Honolulu early.

The changes came as the storm was strengthening and threatening portions of Hawaii with potentially dangerous conditions, including:

  • Strong winds
  • Heavy rainfall
  • Flooding
  • Dangerous surf
  • Changing port conditions

Missing a port is disappointing, especially when you have been dreaming about that stop for months.

You may have booked an excursion.

You may have researched the perfect beach.

You may already know where your first Mai Tai is supposed to come from.

But this is exactly why cruise itineraries are never guaranteed.

The captain is not sitting on the bridge thinking:

“You know what would be fun today? Disappointing 3,000 people.”

When severe weather starts knocking on the door, the correct response is:

We’re going the other way.

And that is exactly what you want the people responsible for your safety to do.

Carnival Has a New Plan for All Those Shoes Guests Leave Behind

Now, from storm trackers to sneaker trackers.

Carnival Cruise Line apparently has one question:

Why do y’all keep leaving your shoes on the ship?

Carnival has partnered with Sneaker Impact, an organization that collects used footwear for reuse and recycling.

Under the program, Sneaker Impact can collect unclaimed shoes left aboard Carnival ships and send them to its facility in Miami instead of simply discarding them.

Guests and crew members may also donate footwear.

And I actually love this idea.

Because somewhere, somebody gets home from their cruise, opens the suitcase, looks around the bedroom, and suddenly yells:

“WHERE ARE MY CROCS?!”

Baby…

Your Crocs may have moved on.

They found purpose.

They’re healing.

Let them go.

Turning Lost-and-Found Into Something Useful

Jokes aside, the partnership provides another potential destination for shoes that might otherwise end up in a landfill.

It also gives guests and crew an opportunity to intentionally donate footwear they no longer need.

So before you leave your cabin on debarkation morning:

  • Check the safe.
  • Check the bathroom.
  • Look under the bed.
  • Check the closet.
  • Check behind the curtains.
  • And please…

American Airlines Flight Returns Safely After Bird Strike

Now let’s head from the cruise terminal to the airport.

This next story sounds frightening—and it was certainly dramatic—but the most important part is that everyone landed safely.

According to the episode, American Airlines Flight 1760 departed Myrtle Beach International Airport in South Carolina for Charlotte, North Carolina.

Shortly after takeoff, the Boeing 737-800 reportedly encountered birds.

Video captured by passengers and people on the ground showed bursts of flames coming from the aircraft’s left engine.

The pilots declared an emergency and returned to Myrtle Beach.

The Most Important Detail: The Plane Landed Safely

The aircraft landed safely, and no injuries were reported.

American Airlines then took the plane out of service for inspection, while passengers were moved to another aircraft to continue their journey to Charlotte.

Now imagine looking out the airplane window and seeing flames.

I do not care how calm the flight attendants look.

Internally, I am already holding a full emergency church service in seat 17A.

“Lord, remember when I said I was going to stop ordering shoes online? TODAY IS THE DAY!”

But incidents like this also demonstrate why pilots and cabin crews train repeatedly for emergencies.

The pilots:

  • Recognized the problem
  • Declared an emergency
  • Returned to the airport
  • Landed safely

That is the part of the story worth remembering.

🌴 Travel Tip of the Day: Severe Weather Can Rewrite Your Cruise

Today’s Hawaii story offers a travel lesson every cruiser should remember:

Do not rely solely on the itinerary you printed months before departure.

When severe weather threatens a cruise destination, plans can change quickly.

Ports may change.

Arrival and departure times may change.

Excursions may change.

Sometimes an entire itinerary may need adjustment.

Now that is how you ride the wave.

A Very Important FlowRider Packing Tip

Before stepping onto a FlowRider, make sure your swimwear is secure.

That means:

  • Tight drawstrings
  • Secure waistbands

Cruise Ducks May Be Getting an Eviction Notice

Speaking of things disappearing on cruise ships, the game of hide-and-seek may be over for cruise ducks on another cruise line.

Marella Cruises is reportedly asking guests not to hide rubber ducks aboard its ships.

Cabin-door decorations are also reportedly being prohibited across the fleet.

For some cruisers, this is serious business.

The little decorated ducks have become their own cruise subculture. Travelers hide them, find them, photograph them, post them online, and sometimes send them sailing from ship to ship.

Some of those ducks have traveled more than I have.

Why Cruise Lines Can Restrict Decorations

Cruise lines can set their own onboard policies involving:

  • Cabin doors
  • Hallway decorations

  • Fire-safety considerations
  • Housekeeping access
  • Signage and passenger flow
  • Anything that could create clutter or confusion

So if Marella says no ducks, Donald and Daffy may have to stay home.

And somewhere, a cruise-duck Facebook group is absolutely calling an emergency meeting.

Now for a much more serious travel update.

Exceptionally low water levels are continuing to affect portions of the Rhine and Danube rivers.

  • Using motor coaches between destinations
  • Changing embarkation points

  • Skipping or replacing ports
  • Adjusting excursion schedules

After disappearing swim trunks, disappearing ducks, and disappearing river depth, somebody deserves a honeymoon.

Sandals Resorts announced new destination-wedding offerings in Jamaica tied to a major refresh of three properties following Hurricane Melissa.

According to the transcript, the three resorts are undergoing a combined $200 million refresh.

Planned Reopening Dates

Sandals South Coast is scheduled to reopen on November 18.

Sandals Montego Bay and the renamed Sandals Caribbean Cay are scheduled to reopen on December 18.

Wedding Offer for 2027

Couples booking qualifying five-night or longer Club or Butler stays for 2027 may be eligible for an upgraded Sweetheart Wedding Package for celebrations of up to 50 guests.

Passengers on previous sailings reported symptoms such as vomiting and abdominal pain. The ship and health officials responded with enhanced cleaning, sanitation, reporting and outbreak-control procedures.

How Travelers Can Protect Themselves

River Cruise Collision Near Vienna Injures 14 People

The river cruise ship Anna Katharina reportedly struck a quay wall and lock gate near Vienna early Friday morning.

Fourteen people were injured, and six were taken to the hospital for further treatment. Other passengers received care at the scene before guests were transferred to another ship.

Authorities are investigating whether technical or operational factors contributed to the collision.

Explora III Joins the Luxury Cruise Fleet

Explora Journeys has officially taken delivery of Explora III in Genoa.

The vessel is the third ship in the luxury brand’s planned six-ship fleet and the first powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The ship is designed to offer a high-end resort experience at sea while supporting lower emissions and cleaner air than traditional marine fuels.

Explora III is also designed for future renewable fuels and has been certified to operate in polar regions.

The ship is basically saying, “I am luxurious, environmentally conscious, and my robe probably has a higher thread count than your sheets at home.”

Future ships are expected to include:

  • Explora IV in 2027
  • Explora V in 2027
  • Explora VI in 2028

Holland America Line is showing solo cruisers some balcony love through its major fleet-refurbishment program.

Guests aboard Emerald Princess encountered an unexpected mystery while sailing off Alaska: an empty lifeboat drifting in the water.

Severe Weather Creates Airport Chaos in the Northeast

Severe storms caused widespread flight delays and cancellations across New York and other parts of the Northeast.

More than 630 flights were reportedly canceled at New York-area airports on July 21, with LaGuardia, JFK and Newark among the most heavily affected. American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue and United issued travel waivers covering certain airports and travel dates.
