Gangway Falls Into the Sea as Wonder of the Seas Leaves CocoCay

A gangway fell into the water as Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas departed Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.

Thankfully, no guests were reportedly standing on the gangway when it entered the sea, and no passenger injuries were reported.

That gangway watcher watched the ship pulling away and apparently said, “Wait for me!”

The incident occurred as the ship was leaving the pier. The exact cause had not been publicly confirmed in the source material, so we will not launch our own maritime investigation from the sofa.

What matters most is that passengers were not reported injured.

Why Departure Areas Are Restricted

Cruise-ship arrivals and departures involve moving equipment, heavy lines, gangways and coordinated activity between ship and shore personnel.

Restricted areas help protect passengers while crew members:

• Remove or reposition gangways
• Handle mooring lines
• Secure doors and access points
• Communicate with pier personnel
• Prepare the ship to leave
• Monitor changing water and weather conditions

When the crew says the gangway is closed, that is not a suggestion. Step back and let the professionals handle the giant floating city.

The Bahamas Travel Advisory Has Been Updated

The United States updated its travel advisory for the Bahamas on July 28.

The Bahamas remained at Level 2, meaning travelers should exercise increased caution. The advisory level itself did not rise, but the summary was updated with more specific safety information.

That does not automatically mean you should cancel your cruise, lock the suitcase, hide the family and crawl under the bed.

It means travelers should read the details, understand the risks, and make informed decisions.

What the Updated Guidance Highlights

The advisory discusses concerns that may include:

• Violent crime in parts of Nassau and Freeport
• Staying aware of your surroundings
• Using reputable transportation and excursion providers
• Following local laws and regulations
• Exercising care around beaches and nightlife areas
• Avoiding accidental possession of prohibited items

The summary also warns travelers about jet skis and other recreational watercraft that may be unlicensed, uninsured, poorly maintained or operated without proper attention to weather conditions.

Nothing ruins a beach day faster than discovering the jet-ski operator’s only qualification is owning a whistle and a laminated business card.

What Cruisers Should Do

Before going ashore:

• Review the current destination advisory.
• Book through established excursion providers.
• Confirm whether operators carry appropriate insurance.
• Follow local beach and boating regulations.

Disney Believe Reveal Is Coming in October

Disney Cruise Line is preparing to reveal more information about its next ship, the Disney Believe.

Somewhere, Disney adults and big kids are clearing their calendars and locating their Mickey ears.

And by “big kid,” I mean me.

According to the transcript, Disney plans to share new details during a livestream on October 7. The Wish-class ship is expected to arrive in late 2027 and draw inspiration from promise, possibility and what lies beyond the horizon.

In other words, Disney said, “Bring the children, bring the grandparents and bring the credit card with the highest available balance.”

What Travelers May Expect

The approximately 140,000-ton ship is expected to feature experiences inspired by:

• Disney
• Pixar
• Marvel
• Star Wars
• Family storytelling
• Immersive entertainment
• Themed dining
• Activities for children and adults

Disney is also planning a special one-night presentation aboard the Disney Wish on October 7 during a four-night Bahamas cruise from Port Canaveral.

You already know somebody will be wearing Mickey ears, carrying a lightsaber, singing “Let It Go” and trying to reserve an inaugural sailing before the livestream ends.

Port Tampa Bay Begins Work on a New Cruise Terminal

Port Tampa Bay has started site preparation for its fourth cruise terminal.

It will be the port’s first newly constructed cruise terminal in more than 25 years. The project is expected to open in 2029 and could support more than 200 additional cruise-ship calls each year.

The port also expects the expansion to help increase annual cruise traffic beyond two million passengers.

Tampa looked at Miami and Port Canaveral and said, “Slide over. We are joining the group chat.”

What the Project Includes

Early work involves:

• Filling more than five acres of land
• Relocating stormwater infrastructure
• Preparing the site for terminal construction
• Developing parking-garage plans
• Designing passenger-processing areas
• Supporting future cruise capacity

For travelers, the expansion could eventually mean:

• More cruise ships
• Additional itineraries
• More competition
• Greater departure flexibility
• Easier access for travelers in Florida and the Southeast
• More pre- and post-cruise opportunities in Tampa

It may also create another parking garage where you can forget where you left the car.

Pro tip: Take a picture of your parking level. After seven nights of sun, buffets, drink packages, and entertainment, your memory may still be onboard.

WestJet Strike Ends, but Disruptions May Continue

WestJet and the union representing approximately 4,400 cabin crew members reached a tentative agreement, ending the work stoppage and withdrawing strike and lockout notices.

That is the good news.

The not-quite-as-good news is that delays and cancellations may continue while the airline:

• Repositions aircraft
• Restores routes
• Reassigns flight crews
• Rebuilds schedules
• Accommodates disrupted passengers
• Reconnects travelers with onward transportation

The end of a strike does not mean a previously canceled flight has suddenly risen from the dead.

Verify first. Then go to the airport.

Delta’s Premium Basic Fares May Carry Large Penalties

Delta has updated rules for its unbundled premium basic fares, with some change and cancellation penalties reaching hundreds of dollars.

According to the transcript:

• Changing a First Basic ticket may cost $300.
• Changing a Premium Select Basic ticket may cost $400.
• Canceling a basic business-class ticket may carry a $500 penalty.

After the penalty is deducted, the remaining ticket value may generally be issued as a Delta eCredit. Travelers may also need to pay any fare difference when changing flights.

• Whether upgrades are allowed
• Whether same-day changes are permitted

Saving $150 today is not a bargain if changing the ticket tomorrow costs $500.

Travel Tip of the Day: Read the Rules Before Booking a Basic Fare

Before purchasing any ticket labeled Basic, Saver, Light or Economy Basic, review the change and cancellation rules before entering your credit-card number.

Check whether:

• The ticket can be changed
• The ticket can be canceled
• You receive a refund or travel credit
• A cancellation penalty applies
• Baggage is included
• Seat selection costs extra
• Upgrades are permitted
• Same-day changes are allowed
