Cruise & Travel News Roundup: Carnival Reinvents Dining, Holland America Celebrates Alaska, Universal Sees Softer Demand & Southwest’s Changes Pay Off

Cruise News Roundup | Aired October 22, 2026| Episode 76

Cruise family, today’s Boarding Call is serving food, glaciers, theme parks, and airline money moves.

Carnival Cruise Line is rolling out a major new dining strategy after studying what guests actually eat across more than 100 million meals a year. Holland America Line is getting ready to celebrate 80 years of exploring Alaska with a collection of heritage experiences. Universal’s theme parks are seeing softer financial results, while Southwest Airlines says many of its controversial changes are contributing to stronger revenue.

Grab your boarding pass, grab something from the bar, and let’s get into the latest cruise and travel headlines.

🍽️ Carnival Is Cooking Up “The Next Course”

Carnival Cruise Line apparently looked at more than 100 million meals served annually and asked one very important question:

“Okay…what are y’all actually eating?”

The answer?

More seafood, international flavors, convenient dining options, fresh bagels—and apparently anything that lets guests spend less time waiting and more time enjoying their vacation.

Carnival calls its new culinary strategy The Next Course, and this is much bigger than adding one new restaurant.

The program includes entirely new venues debuting on Carnival Festivale in 2027 and Carnival Tropicale in 2028, along with dining improvements being introduced throughout the existing fleet.

A chef demonstrating cooking techniques on stage, with a backdrop featuring the text 'The next Course' and a Carnival logo. Various cooking ingredients and utensils are displayed in front of him.

New Carnival Dining Concepts

Among the upcoming restaurants are:

  • 🦞 Emeril’s Coastal Seafood — coastal-inspired seafood created with Chief Culinary Officer Emeril Lagasse
  • 🌺 Uku Lei Lei — Hawaiian specialties combined with Asian influences
  • 🇮🇹🇬🇷 Fetaccine — a Mediterranean-inspired concept combining Italian favorites with Greek specialties
  • 🇫🇷🎶 Le Bistro Musicale — classic French cuisine in a relaxed Parisian atmosphere with music, exclusive to Carnival Festivale

Carnival is also changing dining experiences across ships already in service.

Guests can expect refreshed Main Dining Room menus, rotating specials, family-friendly Lido Marketplace selections, Bagels @ Sea, mobile coffee ordering, updated Chef’s Table menus, pop-up concepts, and expanded Express Dining.

Cruise family, Carnival serves more than 100 million meals every year.

So I imagine somebody eventually looked at the data and asked:

“Who keeps ordering the Chocolate Melting Cake?”

And the answer was…

Everybody. 😂

🥯 Carnival Is Also Making Dining Faster and More Flexible

One particularly interesting part of The Next Course is Carnival’s focus on convenience.

Not every cruise meal needs to take two hours.

Carnival’s expanded Express Dining concept offers guests a quicker Main Dining Room experience while still providing familiar dishes and desserts.

The cruise line is also adding grab-and-go choices, breakfast pop-ups, milkshake and ice cream concepts, and easier mobile ordering.

That may appeal to cruisers who want to eat and get back to the pool, show, casino—or whatever calls to them.

Sometimes vacation dining should be elegant.

Sometimes vacation dining should simply be:

“Feed me quickly. The comedy show starts in 30 minutes.”

🏔️ Holland America Celebrates 80 Years in Alaska

Next up, we’re heading north.

Holland America Line is preparing to celebrate 80 years of exploring Alaska in 2027, highlighting experiences that connect today’s travelers with generations of Alaska tourism.

Its new Alaska Heritage Tours collection features classic experiences rooted in decades of Alaskan tourism.

Among the featured experiences are:

  • 🚂 White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad
  • 🚆 McKinley Explorer
  • 🧊 Mendenhall Glacier
  • 🐋 Kenai Fjords National Park
  • 🏔️ Denali National Park
  • 🚢 River and wilderness experiences in Alaska’s interior

The heritage collection is available with select 2027 Alaska cruises and Cruisetours, and bookings are already open.

Cruise family…

80 years in Alaska.

Holland America basically said:

🚂 Alaska Heritage Tours Bring Classic Experiences Forward

Holland America’s Alaska Heritage Tours include classic experiences such as the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad. (Photo Credit: Holland America Line)

“We were doing Alaska before Alaska was on everybody’s bucket list.”

Some Alaska experiences are popular for a reason.

The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, for example, follows a route connected to the Klondike Gold Rush.

Holland America’s glass-domed McKinley Explorer gives travelers panoramic views while traveling inland, while Denali Cruise tours extend the vacation beyond the coastline and deeper into Alaska.

Holland America says its 2027 program will include more than 200 shore excursions, glacier experiences, destination-focused dining, cultural programming, and extended land-and-sea Cruisetours.

For travelers who want more than a quick port visit, pairing an Alaska cruise with an inland journey could offer a much broader look at the destination.

🎢 Universal Theme Parks See Softer Financial Results

Now let’s leave the glaciers and head to the theme parks.

Universal’s newest attractions may still be shiny, but Comcast’s latest numbers show near-term pressure on its theme park business.

For the third quarter of 2026, Comcast reported $2.597 billion in theme park revenue, down 4.4% from the same period a year earlier.

Adjusted EBITDA for the theme park business declined 17.1% to $780 million. Comcast attributed the lower revenue primarily to reduced admissions revenue, including the impact of increased promotional activity.

The company described theme parks as facing near-term cyclical headwinds, but it remains confident in the business over the long term.

Travelers should watch this.

When theme parks compete harder for vacation dollars, consumers may see:

  • Promotional offers
  • Vacation packages
  • Hotel incentives
  • Ticket discounts
  • Seasonal deals

Cruise family, even giant theme parks still have to compete for your vacation budget.

Mickey is watching.

Universal is watching.

And my wallet?

I’m hiding it. 😂

✈️ Southwest Says Its Big Changes Are Showing Up in the Numbers

And finally, Southwest Airlines has changed a lot.

Assigned seating.

Extra-legroom seats.

Checked-bag fees.

New fare products.

Loyalty changes.

Southwest reported record third-quarter revenue as assigned seating, premium options, and new ancillary products contributed to stronger financial performance. (Photo Credit: Southwest Airline)

And according to Southwest’s latest financial report, those changes are helping generate more revenue.

Southwest reported record third-quarter operating revenue of $8.4 billion, up 21.2% year over year.

Operating income jumped from $35 million in the third quarter of 2025 to $379 million in 2026.

Southwest noted that more customers chose premium fare benefits, along with new ancillary products—including checked-bag fees and assigned and extra-legroom seating—which helped drive passenger revenue higher.

So whether longtime Southwest fans love the changes or not…

Financially?

The numbers are getting management’s attention.

Cruise family, Southwest changed the seats, bags, loyalty program, and pricing.

And the earnings report basically said:

“Run, Forrest! Keep going!” 😂

💳 More Changes Are Coming to Southwest

Southwest isn’t finished.

The airline plans to continue evolving the passenger experience through 2027.

Future initiatives include:

  • A new premium Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card
  • The first Southwest Icon Lounge locations
  • Continued installation of larger overhead bins
  • In-seat power
  • Updated aircraft interiors
  • Fleetwide Starlink Wi-Fi targeted for completion in fall 2027

Southwest says its first airport lounges are expected to open in late 2027, with the premium credit card providing access to the network.

That is a dramatically different Southwest from the airline many travelers grew up with.

The question is whether customers view that as an upgrade…

Or as Southwest becoming more like everybody else.

A colorful graphic featuring a globe, suitcase, camera, clock, and checklist, with the text 'Travel Tip of the Day' prominently displayed.

💡 Travel Tip of the Day: Follow the Value, Not Just the Price

Today’s Carnival and Universal stories give us the perfect reminder:

The lowest advertised price is not always the best value.

A cheaper cruise fare or theme park ticket may look attractive at first.

But before booking, consider:

  • What is actually included?
  • What costs extra?
  • How much will you spend on dining?
  • Are transportation costs included?
  • Will you pay extra for experiences you really want?
  • Are the cheaper options convenient for the way you travel?

A $100 savings can disappear quickly if you later spend $200 adding the things you actually wanted.

Cruise family…

Cheap and good value are not always the same thing.

Sometimes spending a little more upfront saves you from spending your entire vacation asking:

“Wait…that costs extra too?” 😂

⚓ Cruise Family, What Do You Think?

Now I want to hear from you.

Carnival cruisers: Which new dining concept sounds best—Emeril’s Coastal Seafood, Uku Lei Lei, Fetaccine, or Le Bistro Musicale?

Alaska cruisers: Would one of Holland America’s Heritage Tours make you more interested in booking an Alaska cruise or Cruisetour?

Universal fans: Have you noticed lighter crowds or better promotions lately?

And finally…

Southwest travelers: Do assigned seating, bag fees, premium options, and airport lounges improve Southwest—or are they changing too much of what made Southwest different?

Drop your answers in the comments because I would love to hear what you think.

Cruise News Roundup: Royal Caribbean Gratuity Rumors, Record Cruise Demand, MSC’s Mega Villa & Mexico’s Sargassum Watch

Cruise News Roundup | Aired October 21, 2026| Episode 75

Cruise family, today’s Boarding Call has rumors, record-breaking cruise demand, one seriously over-the-top cruise villa, and a reminder that Mother Nature still has a reservation at the beach.

In this edition of Your Daily Boarding Call, Royal Caribbean is clearing up confusion surrounding cruise gratuities, AAA says a record number of Americans could cruise in 2027, MSC Cruises has unveiled a two-story villa with its own movie theater and secret door, and officials in Mexico are already preparing for another potentially heavy sargassum season.

Grab your boarding pass, grab something from the bar, and let’s get into the latest cruise and travel headlines.

Promotional graphic for a podcast titled 'Your Daily Boarding Call' featuring a large cruise ship, with text about cruise news, travel alerts, and industry updates.

💰 Royal Caribbean Says the Gratuity Policy Did NOT Change

Cruise fam, Royal Caribbean gratuities have been all over social media.

But before anybody starts doing cruise math in the comments, let’s clear up what changed—and what didn’t.

According to the original report, Royal Caribbean confirmed it hasn’t increased its gratuity rate for drinks and specialty dining.

An error briefly appeared on the cruise line’s website showing a 20% gratuity, but the correct rate remains 18%.

Then things got even messier.

A fake Royal Caribbean letter began circulating online, claiming guests could no longer adjust or remove daily gratuities onboard.

That information was also false.

Royal Caribbean’s current policy still lets guests adjust gratuities through Guest Relations before the morning of disembarkation.

So, cruise family:

One website error.

One fake letter.

And Facebook said:

“Let the chaos begin.” 😂

The bigger lesson?

Before you believe a screenshot, check the cruise line’s official website, app, or communications.

A vibrant graphic featuring a Royal Caribbean cruise ship with a message about gratuity rates. It highlights the misinformation about a 20% rate marked as 'Fake News' and clarifies the correct 18% rate for drinks and specialty dining.

📱 Social Media Cruise Rumors Can Spread Fast

Cruise policy rumors move much faster than official corrections.

A screenshot can be:

  • Outdated
  • Edited
  • Taken out of context
  • Based on a temporary website error
  • Or completely fabricated

That’s why travel policy changes should always be verified before they’re shared.

If a post says “effective immediately” and everyone in the comments is panicking…

That’s your cue to verify first and share second.

🚢 AAA Predicts 22.4 Million Americans Could Cruise in 2027

If you thought cruise ships were crowded now, AAA says even more Americans could be heading to sea next year.

According to the original transcript, AAA is projecting that 22.4 million Americans could take an ocean cruise in 2027.

That would represent a 3.6% increase over 2026 and approximately 57% growth compared with pre-pandemic 2019 levels.

And where are most of those cruisers headed?

You guessed it.

🌴 The Caribbean Still Leads

Approximately 71% of U.S. cruise passenger volume is expected to head to the Caribbean.

Why does cruising continue to grow?

AAA points to several factors:

  • Convenience
  • Perceived value
  • Multiple destinations in one vacation
  • More predictable vacation costs
  • A wide range of cruise lines and ship styles

Cruise fam…

22.4 million people.

Translation?

If you want the good cabin, the popular shore excursion, or that specialty dining reservation at 7:00 p.m…

Book it before Linda and Leroy do. 😂

🗓️ Growing Cruise Demand Could Make Early Planning More Important

If cruise demand continues climbing, popular sailings and cabin categories could become harder to secure.

Travelers may want to pay particular attention to:

  • Holiday sailings
  • Spring break
  • Summer cruises
  • New ship launches
  • Suites
  • Family cabins
  • Specialty dining
  • Popular excursions

More travelers don’t necessarily mean you have to book years in advance.

But if you’re particular about your ship, cabin, date, or itinerary, waiting until the last minute could leave you with fewer choices.

🎬 MSC Reveals a Two-Story Villa With Its Own Movie Theater

MSC Cruises has apparently decided that calling something a “cruise cabin” is no longer ambitious enough.

Because the cruise line has revealed the Grand Hamptons Villa, coming to MSC World Atlantic.

And cruise family…

Calling this thing a stateroom feels disrespectful.

The two-story villa is more than 2,475 square feet and is expected to include:

  • A private movie theater
  • A dedicated kids’ suite
  • A climbing tower
  • A private terrace
  • A whirlpool
  • 24-hour butler service
  • And yes…a secret door

The Grand Hamptons Villa is expected to debut when MSC World Atlantic begins sailing from Port Canaveral in November 2027.

A movie theater.

A whirlpool.

A butler.

A secret door.

Cruise family, that’s not a stateroom.

That’s a whole vacation inside the vacation. 😂

MSC Cruises’ Grand Hamptons Villa offers more than 2,475 square feet of space, including a private movie theater, whirlpool, butler service, and a secret door. (Photo Credit: MSC Cruises)

🏠 Is This Still a Cruise Cabin?

At more than 2,475 square feet, the Grand Hamptons Villa is larger than many homes.

And MSC appears to be targeting families or groups looking for a high-end private experience without giving up the entertainment and amenities of a large cruise ship.

For some cruisers, the private theater might be the big attraction.

For others?

It could be the terrace.

The whirlpool.

The butler.

Or…

That secret door.

Because apparently now we’re cruising in a mystery novel.

🌊 Mexico Is Already Preparing for the 2027 Sargassum Season

Mexico’s 2026 sargassum season is barely over, and officials are already preparing for 2027.

That’s because the next season could be just as significant.

According to the transcript, officials collected more than 133,000 tons of sargassum throughout Quintana Roo during the 2026 season.

Federal officials and the Quintana Roo government are now looking ahead to next year.

Scientists are also monitoring whether Atlantic sargassum levels could rise further.

Mexico plans to improve early detection efforts by using multiple satellites to track the seaweed before large amounts reach shorelines.

Areas that could be affected include popular destinations such as:

  • Cancun
  • Playa del Carmen
  • Tulum
  • Cozumel
A beautiful tropical beach scene with clear turquoise water and sunlit palm trees on the left, and workers removing seaweed from the shore with a tractor on the right.
Officials in Quintana Roo are preparing early for the 2027 sargassum season after collecting more than 133,000 tons in 2026. (Ai-Generated Images)

🌿 What Exactly Is Sargassum?

Sargassum is a naturally occurring golden-brown floating macroalgae.

It stays near the surface of the ocean using gas-filled structures called pneumatocysts.

In normal amounts, sargassum plays an important role in the marine environment by creating floating habitat for fish, sea turtles, and other marine life.

Problems arise when massive blooms wash ashore.

Large accumulations can:

  • Cover beaches
  • Affect swimming conditions
  • Disrupt marine ecosystems
  • Create strong odors as the seaweed decomposes
  • Affect the visitor experience at resorts and coastal destinations

The encouraging part is that officials appear to be preparing earlier this time.

Better monitoring may let cleanup crews and local governments respond sooner.

💡 Travel Tip of the Day: Verify Before You Share

Today’s Royal Caribbean gratuity rumor is a perfect travel reminder.

Before sharing a cruise policy change you saw on social media, verify it.

Check:

  • The cruise line’s official website
  • Your cruise line app
  • An official email
  • Your booking documents
  • Or your travel advisor

Screenshots can be old, edited, taken out of context, or completely fake.

Cruise family…

If the post says:

“EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY!”

…and everybody is panicking?

That’s your cue to:

Verify first. Share second.

Cruise News Roundup | Aired October 20 2026| Episode 74

Cruise family, today’s Boarding Call has a little bit of everything: a brand-new Norwegian Cruise Line ship, a dramatic medical rescue at sea, Christmas arriving early across Carnival’s fleet, and Virgin Voyages taking its adults-only experience all the way to the airplane.

In this edition of Your Daily Boarding Call, Norwegian Cruise Line introduces the sixth and final ship in its Prima-class family, a Royal Caribbean guest is airlifted from Odyssey of the Seas in rough seas near Sicily, Carnival reveals exactly when its ships will receive their Christmas decorations, and JetBlue Vacations teams up with Virgin Voyages for an adults-only vacation that begins before guests even reach the cruise terminal.

🚢 Norwegian Bella Will Complete the Prima-Class Family

Norwegian Cruise Line has introduced the final member of its Prima-class family.

Her name is Norwegian Bella.

And cruise family, she isn’t even sailing yet and somebody is already looking at cabins.

Norwegian Bella is expected to become the sixth and final Prima-class ship, with her debut scheduled for May 2028. Bookings have already opened for her inaugural season.

A large cruise ship with vibrant artwork on its hull sailing in clear blue waters near a coastal town.

Bella is expected to spend much of that first season sailing seven-night Mediterranean itineraries from Barcelona, visiting destinations throughout Italy, France, Spain, and other European ports.

Guests can also expect several familiar Prima-class favorites, including:

  • Ocean Boulevard
  • A large pool deck
  • An expanded Haven experience
  • Mediterranean itineraries
  • Indoor and outdoor spaces inspired by the Prima-class design

Norwegian’s Prima family has already established a distinctive look and experience, and Bella will serve as the final chapter in that generation of ships.

And about that name…

Bella means beautiful.

So apparently the shipyard is under pressure.

You name her Bella?

She better come out looking like a goddess. 😂

🌊 What Makes the Prima Class Different?

Norwegian Cruise Line designed the Prima-class ships with a greater emphasis on outdoor spaces, modern architecture, elevated dining, and premium accommodations.

One signature feature is Ocean Boulevard, an outdoor promenade that wraps around much of the ship and connects guests to restaurants, lounging areas, ocean views, and entertainment spaces.

The class also puts a stronger spotlight on The Haven, Norwegian’s private ship-within-a-ship experience for guests seeking a more exclusive cruise vacation.

For cruisers already familiar with Norwegian Prima, Viva, and other ships in the class, Bella will provide another opportunity to experience that style of cruising—this time as the final ship in the series.

🚁 Dramatic Medical Evacuation From Odyssey of the Seas

Now for a much more serious story.

Strong winds.

Six-foot seas.

And a helicopter hovering above Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas.

A passenger aboard the ship needed urgent medical care while sailing near Sicily on Friday, October 16, prompting a difficult medical evacuation by the Italian Coast Guard.

Conditions were far from ideal.

According to the original report, winds were around 25 miles per hour, and waves reached more than six feet.

A Coast Guard helicopter hovered above the ship while rescuers carefully lifted the ill passenger in a medical litter.

Rescuers successfully transferred the guest ashore for additional medical care.

No further details about the passenger’s condition were released.

Cruise family, situations like this demonstrate just how much coordination goes into an emergency at sea.

The operation involved:

  • Royal Caribbean’s bridge team
  • Onboard medical staff
  • Coast Guard personnel
  • Helicopter pilots
  • Emergency responders ashore

That takes incredible precision.

While nobody wants to see an emergency happen during a vacation, it is reassuring to know extensive plans and procedures are in place when serious medical situations arise.

We wish the guest a full recovery.

⚕️ Medical Emergencies at Sea: What Cruisers Should Remember

Cruise ships have onboard medical facilities capable of treating many illnesses and injuries.

But certain emergencies may require transferring a passenger to a hospital on land.

Depending on where the ship is sailing, that can mean:

  • Diverting to another port
  • Meeting emergency boats at sea
  • Changing the ship’s itinerary
  • Arranging helicopter evacuation

Weather, distance from land, sea conditions, and the passenger’s medical needs can complicate those situations.

It’s also another reason travelers should consider travel protection that includes medical emergency and evacuation coverage.

🎄 Carnival Reveals When Christmas Is Coming to All 29 Ships

You may not want a lot for Christmas…

But if you’ve ever wondered exactly when your Carnival cruise ship becomes a floating Christmas card, Carnival has the answer.

The cruise line has released its 2026 holiday decorating schedule for all 29 ships.

A beautifully decorated cruise ship atrium during the holiday season, featuring a large Christmas tree adorned with ornaments and a star on top, surrounded by festive decorations, including garlands and bows. The space is elegantly lit, showcasing a luxurious ambiance with seating areas and a grand piano in view.
Carnival Cruise Line will begin decorating its fleet for Christmas in late November, with all 29 ships scheduled to receive holiday décor. (Ai-generated)

The first ship scheduled to get festive is Carnival Encounter on November 22.

Most of Carnival’s fleet will receive its holiday transformation between late November and early December.

The final ship scheduled to receive its decorations will be Carnival Luminosa on December 14.

Professional decorating teams handle the transformation while each ship is at its home port.

And yes, the decorations are expected to remain onboard through the New Year’s Eve sailings.

So guests cruising during the holiday season can expect plenty of:

  • Christmas trees
  • Garlands
  • Holiday lights
  • Seasonal decorations
  • Festive photo opportunities
  • Holiday-themed activities

Cruise family, Halloween isn’t even finished, and Carnival basically said:

“Where are the Christmas decorations?” 🎄😂

And once that tree goes up?

You already know what happens next.

Mariah Carey has boarded the ship.

There is no escape.

🎅 Would You Book a Cruise Specifically for the Holidays?

Holiday sailings can create a very different onboard atmosphere.

For families, couples, and groups who already love cruising, spending Christmas or New Year’s Eve at sea can combine a traditional celebration with a vacation.

That can mean waking up on Christmas morning with an ocean view instead of worrying about who is cooking dinner.

And for travelers who love decorations, holiday music, and festive activities, watching a ship get its Christmas makeover can be part of the attraction.

So yes…

Sometimes the décor itself can help you choose which sailing.

JetBlue Vacations and Virgin Voyages are teaming up for an adults-only travel experience that begins with a kid-free flight and continues aboard Brilliant Lady (Ai-generated Image)

✈️ JetBlue and Virgin Voyages Take Adults-Only Travel to 30,000 Feet

Virgin Voyages was already adults-only.

Apparently that wasn’t enough.

Somebody asked:

“But what about the flight?”

JetBlue Vacations and Virgin Voyages have teamed up for a special vacation package called Do Not Disturb.

And this adults-only getaway begins before passengers even reach the cruise ship.

The experience starts with an adults-only JetBlue flight from New York JFK to Fort Lauderdale.

Yes.

The entire flight is adults-only.

Guests then receive private transportation to Miami before boarding Virgin Voyages’ Brilliant Lady for a four-night adults-only cruise.

The itinerary includes:

  • Key West
  • The Beach Club at Bimini
  • Four nights aboard Brilliant Lady
  • Adults-only cruising from beginning to end

The trip is scheduled for March 2027, with only 60 cabins available.

Packages begin around $2,750 for two guests, including taxes, fees, and gratuities.

Extras are also expected to include:

  • Airport lounge access
  • Drinks aboard the flight
  • Priority boarding
  • Private transportation
  • A cabin bar tab aboard Brilliant Lady

Virgin said:

“No kids on the ship.”

JetBlue said:

“Keep that same energy.”

Now THAT is commitment to a theme. 😂

🌴 What Is Included in the “Do Not Disturb” Package?

The package creates an adults-only experience from airport departure through the cruise vacation.

Based on the original transcript, travelers can expect:

  • Adults-only JetBlue flight from JFK to Fort Lauderdale
  • Lounge access
  • Drinks during the flight
  • Priority boarding
  • Private transportation from Fort Lauderdale to Miami
  • Four-night Brilliant Lady cruise
  • Key West
  • Beach Club at Bimini
  • Cabin bar tab
  • Taxes, fees, and gratuities included in the starting package price

For travelers who deliberately choose adults-only resorts, cruises, and vacations, this package takes the concept one step further.

The adults-only vacation doesn’t start when you walk onto the ship.

It starts at the airport.

💡 Travel Tip of the Day: Don’t Book a Brand-New Ship Just to Be First

Norwegian Bella gives us today’s perfect travel reminder.

When a brand-new cruise ship opens for booking, don’t automatically choose the inaugural sailing simply because you want to say you were first.

Compare:

  • The inaugural voyage
  • The next few sailings
  • Cabin prices
  • Airfare
  • Pre-cruise hotels
  • Transportation
  • Cruise protection
  • Total vacation cost

The first sailing of a highly anticipated ship may come with premium pricing.

New ships can also occasionally experience:

  • Construction timeline adjustments
  • Venue changes
  • Schedule changes
  • Operational tweaks during early sailings

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be among the first passengers onboard.

Just make sure you’re not paying the:

“I need to post this before everybody else” price. 😂

Sometimes sailing a few weeks—or even a few months—later can provide essentially the same experience for less money.

⚓ Cruise Family, What Do You Think?

Now I want to hear from you.

NCL cruisers: Are you ready for Norwegian Bella?

Royal Caribbean cruisers: Does seeing a helicopter medical evacuation make you appreciate just how much emergency planning happens behind the scenes?

Carnival cruisers: Would you specifically choose a cruise because the ship is decorated for Christmas?

And finally…

Virgin Voyages and JetBlue travelers: Would you pay extra for an adults-only vacation that stays kid-free from the airport to the cruise ship?

Drop your answers in the comments because I would love to hear what you think.

Cruise News Roundup: Hurricane Trudy Disrupts Mexican Riviera Cruises, PortMiami Tackles Traffic & Disney Changes Palo Dining

Cruise News Roundup | Aired October 16, 2026| Episode 73

Cruise family, Mother Nature is rewriting itineraries, PortMiami is trying to make embarkation day a little less stressful, and Disney Cruise Line is changing the way one of its most popular adults-only restaurants handles dinner.

In this edition of Your Daily Boarding Call, Hurricane Trudy is affecting Mexican Riviera cruises, Norwegian Bliss has dropped Acapulco, Brilliant Lady has been rerouted again, PortMiami is rolling out a new traffic-management strategy, and Palo is saying goodbye to its traditional prix-fixe dinner menu.

Grab your boarding pass, grab something from the bar, and let’s get into the latest cruise and travel headlines.

🌀 Hurricane Trudy Disrupts Mexican Riviera Cruises

Hurricane Trudy rapidly intensified into a Category 3 hurricane early Friday, October 16, with maximum sustained winds of about 120 mph as it moved off Mexico’s Pacific coast. Later updates indicated fluctuations in strength, underscoring just how quickly tropical systems can change. National Hurricane Center

And cruise lines aren’t waiting around to see what happens next.

Norwegian Bliss Drops Acapulco

Norwegian Bliss, currently sailing a long repositioning voyage from Los Angeles, canceled its scheduled October 17 visit to Acapulco because of Hurricane Trudy.

Instead, guests are receiving another day at sea while the ship remains away from the storm and potentially dangerous conditions. Cruise Hive

That is exactly what cruisers should want cruise lines to do.

A missed port may be disappointing, but keeping passengers, crew members, and the ship safely away from hurricane-force winds and rough seas comes first.

🚢 Brilliant Lady Rerouted for the Fourth Cruise in a Row

Virgin Voyages’ Brilliant Lady is also feeling the effects of another tropical system in the Pacific.

The ship’s October 17 Mexican Riviera sailing was originally expected to visit Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán, and Puerto Vallarta. But Hurricane Trudy forced another itinerary adjustment, replacing the scheduled Mexican ports as the cruise line kept the ship out of the storm’s path. Cruise Hive

That makes four consecutive Brilliant Lady sailings affected by tropical weather.

A Virgin Voyages cruise ship sailing in open water during sunset.
Hurricane Trudy prompted another itinerary change for Brilliant Lady, marking the fourth consecutive sailing affected by tropical weather. (Photo Credit: Virgin Voyages)

Cruise family, at this point Mother Nature has officially joined the itinerary-planning department.

Of course, weather-related itinerary changes can be frustrating—especially when guests booked excursions or chose a cruise specifically for certain ports. But when tropical systems are involved, flexibility is part of cruising.

The itinerary may change.

The destination may change.

The important thing is that the ship sails somewhere safe.

⚠️ Why Cruise Lines Change Itineraries During Hurricanes

Cruise ships have one major advantage during severe weather:

They can move.

Unlike a resort or coastal hotel, a cruise ship can change course, slow down, speed up, skip a port, or replace an itinerary entirely to avoid dangerous conditions.

Those decisions may happen quickly as forecasts evolve.

That’s why passengers sailing during hurricane season should always keep an eye on their cruise line’s app, email notifications, and official communications.

And yes, sometimes your carefully planned beach day becomes an unexpected sea day.

But a safe day at sea beats a front-row seat to a hurricane every time.

🚦 PortMiami Has a New Plan for Cruise-Day Traffic

Now let’s move from hurricane stress to another type of cruise stress:

Aerial view of a busy port with several large cruise ships docked alongside a shipping yard and cranes.
Multiple cruise ships docked at PortMiami during a busy embarkation day. (Photo Credit: Cruise Industry News)

PortMiami traffic.

If you’ve ever sat in a line of cars wondering whether your cruise ship might leave before you even reach the terminal, Miami has heard your cries.

PortMiami is preparing for a massive 2026–2027 cruise season, including 81 high-season days when 7 to 10 cruise ships could call at the port on the same day. DataPortuaria

That means tens of thousands of arriving and departing passengers, rideshares, buses, taxis, luggage trucks, and private vehicles all trying to navigate the port.

So PortMiami is rolling out several initiatives designed to reduce congestion.

What’s changing?

PortMiami’s traffic-management plan includes:

  • Better information about which port entrance passengers should use
  • Increased reminders to arrive during your assigned embarkation window
  • AI-powered traffic and congestion monitoring
  • Additional law-enforcement traffic support on select high-volume days
  • Coordinated airport shuttle programs with cruise lines
  • New educational videos explaining embarkation timing and port entrances

The port is using GridMatrix technology to help monitor congestion and coordinate traffic flow. DataPortuaria

Some cruise passengers, including certain Carnival Celebration guests, may also see additional airport shuttle options on select high-volume days.

Translation?

If your boarding time is 1:00 p.m., arriving at 8:47 a.m. probably won’t help anyone.

Miami gave you that arrival window for a reason.

🕐 Your Embarkation Time Actually Matters

Cruisers often think arriving several hours early means they’ll get onboard faster.

Sometimes it does the opposite.

Arriving well before your assigned window can contribute to:

  • Terminal crowding
  • Longer traffic lines
  • More rideshare congestion
  • Luggage bottlenecks
  • Passengers waiting outside before they’re permitted to check in

So unless your cruise line tells you otherwise, follow your assigned arrival time.

🍽️ Disney Cruise Line Is Changing Palo Dinner Pricing

Disney cruisers who love Palo, pay attention.

The familiar prix-fixe dinner option is sailing away.

Beginning October 22, 2026, Disney Cruise Line will transition Palo, Palo Steakhouse, and Palo Trattoria from the traditional fixed-price dinner menu to à la carte pricing. Blog Mickey

Instead of paying one set price for dinner, guests will pay individually for the items they order.

The transition rolls out across Disney’s fleet over several days:

DateDisney Cruise Ships
October 22Disney Wonder
October 23Disney Fantasy, Disney Dream, Disney Wish
October 24Disney Magic, Disney Treasure, Disney Destiny
October 26Disney Adventure

So Palo basically said:

“You can absolutely still have the steak. We just need to discuss each item separately.” 😂

💳 What Happens to the $55 Castaway Club Benefit?

Good news for some of Disney Cruise Line’s most loyal guests.

Platinum and Pearl Castaway Club members, along with eligible guests in the same stateroom, can keep a $55-per-person dinner credit toward eligible à la carte items. Small World Vacations

But there’s an important change:

The benefit is for dinner only.

It will not apply to Palo brunch.

Guests are also responsible for beverages, gratuities, and any amount that exceeds the $55 credit. Small World Vacations

If you already have Palo reservations, review the details before your cruise so you know what to expect when the bill arrives.

💡 Travel Tip of the Day

Today’s Hurricane Trudy and PortMiami stories offer two very good reminders.

1. Never assume your cruise itinerary is guaranteed during hurricane season

Ports can be changed, reordered, shortened, or canceled entirely.

Before your cruise:

  • Check your cruise line app frequently
  • Monitor your email
  • Review excursion cancellation policies
  • Be cautious with non-refundable independent tours
  • Keep travel insurance coverage and terms in mind

Flexibility can save you a lot of frustration when weather comes into play.

2. Respect your assigned embarkation time

Arriving at the port several hours early doesn’t automatically mean you’ll board the ship several hours early.

Sometimes it simply means:

More traffic. More waiting. More time staring at your ship while somebody tells you, “Your boarding group hasn’t opened yet.”

Cruise family, the goal is vacation.

Not traffic therapy.

I want to hear from you.

Norwegian cruisers: Would you rather skip Acapulco entirely or risk rough weather just to keep the scheduled port?

Virgin Voyages Sailors: If Brilliant Lady were rerouted for your cruise, would you be disappointed—or would you say, “As long as the ship leaves, I’m good!”?

Miami cruisers: What’s the worst traffic you’ve experienced getting to PortMiami?

Disney cruisers: Do you prefer one fixed dinner price at Palo, or would you rather order à la carte and pay only for what you want?

Cruise & Travel News Roundup: Eataly Comes to MSC World Asia, Dominica Kicks Off Cruise Season, Delta One Goes Luxe & Southwest Reinvents Rapid Rewards

Cruise News Roundup | Aired October 15, 2026| Episode 72

Cruise foodies, Caribbean lovers, premium flyers, and points collectors all have something to talk about this week.

MSC Cruises is bringing Eataly aboard its newest flagship, MSC World Asia. Dominica has officially kicked off what could be a very busy cruise season. Delta is giving its Delta One experience a serious luxury upgrade, while Southwest Airlines is preparing one of the biggest changes yet to its Rapid Rewards loyalty program.

Grab your boarding pass—and maybe something from the bar—because today’s cruise and travel news has a lot to unpack.

🍝 MSC World Asia Is Getting a Taste of Eataly

Apparently, more than 40 places to eat and drink aboard a cruise ship still weren’t enough.

MSC Cruises has announced that Eataly is coming aboard MSC World Asia, giving the upcoming flagship an even bigger dose of Italian flavor.

A large cruise ship, MSC World Asia, sailing on calm waters under a partly cloudy sky.

MSC World Asia will be only the second cruise ship to feature an Eataly restaurant at sea, following the concept’s debut aboard its sister ship, MSC World America. The new ship begins seven-night Mediterranean cruises on December 4, 2026.

And this isn’t simply a place to grab a plate of spaghetti.

The Eataly experience is expected to feature regional Italian favorites, freshly prepared dishes, show cooking, and an outdoor terrace where guests can pair Italian cuisine with ocean views. Guests can also visit the wine cellar at The Terrace Bar to choose an Italian wine to pair with dinner.

MSC World Asia will offer more than 40 bars, lounges, cafés and restaurants, giving travelers plenty of options throughout their cruise.

Or, as I like to imagine the conversation at MSC headquarters:

“Yes, we have more than 40 places to eat and drink…but where are the other pastas?”

🌴 Dominica Opens Its 2026–2027 Cruise Season

From Italian food at sea, we’re heading to the Caribbean.

Dominica—known as the Nature Island—has officially opened its 2026–2027 cruise season and is preparing for a significant influx of cruise visitors.

Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas opened the season on October 8, 2026, arriving at the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth with about 2,100 passengers on a seven-night Southern Caribbean itinerary from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The season’s numbers are impressive.

Dominica is expecting approximately:

  • 267 cruise ship calls
  • 475,521 cruise passengers
  • Visits from ships including Rhapsody of the Seas and MSC World Europa

The projected passenger count is nearly 50,000 higher than the previous season.

Dominica expects more than 475,000 cruise passengers during its 2026–2027 cruise season. (Photo Credit: Discover Dominica Authority or Dominica Air and Sea Ports Authority)

That’s important not only for cruisers looking for new Caribbean experiences, but also for Dominica’s local tourism economy. More cruise guests mean more business for tour guides, taxi operators, restaurants, retailers, craft vendors, and attractions throughout the island.

Dominica is famous for its lush rainforests, waterfalls, volcanic landscapes, hot springs and outdoor adventures, offering a much different Caribbean experience than destinations focused primarily on beaches and shopping.

Cruise family, Dominica basically said:

“Welcome to the Nature Island—and bring everybody!”

✈️ Delta One Is Getting Wagyu, Premium Wine and More Luxury

Now let’s head to the airport.

And economy passengers—you may want to look away for a moment.

Delta Air Lines is rolling out what it describes as one of the most extensive transformations of its Delta One premium experience in nearly 30 years, covering food, drinks, amenities, and onboard hospitality. The revamped experience begins on transoceanic Delta One routes departing Los Angeles, then expands across Delta’s international network in 2027.

What’s coming to Delta One?

Travelers can expect upgrades including:

  • 🍔 A Wagyu beef burger
  • 🐟 Regionally inspired sea bass and other upgraded entrées
  • 🍷 A new premium wine program
  • 🥃 Expanded premium beverage selections
  • 🍨 Elevated desserts, including a Champagne-and-sorbet pairing
  • 👜 New Missoni amenity kits
  • 😴 A new Missoni Mini pillow
  • 🍽️ More personalized onboard dining and service

Delta says it narrowed its new wine program from more than 1,600 evaluated wines to 13 selections from 11 winery partners.

A travel kit featuring a Missoni zip pouch containing a bamboo toothbrush, a pair of navy socks with red accents, a sleep mask, two tubes of skincare products, a pack of earplugs, a pen branded with Delta, and a Grown Alchemist label.

Beginning November 3, the newest Missoni amenity kits will also include premium wellness products, while the new Missoni Mini pillow will eventually expand across transoceanic Delta One flights.

Wagyu beef, premium wine, Missoni accessories…

Meanwhile, somewhere farther back in the aircraft:

“Would you like pretzels and maybe some water?”

I’m kidding, economy flyers. Mostly. 😂

🥈🥇💎 Southwest Is Saying Goodbye to A-List as We Know It

And finally, Southwest Rapid Rewards is getting a major makeover, and its familiar A-List names are disappearing.

Beginning January 1, 2027, Southwest will replace its current two-tier elite structure with three levels:

Silver → Gold → Platinum

Under the new program:

  • A-List becomes Silver
  • A-List Preferred becomes Gold
  • Platinum becomes an entirely new top tier

Southwest will also introduce new Milestone Rewards and additional ways of earning Companion Pass benefits.

Here’s what qualification will look like:

StatusTier Qualifying PointsQualifying Flights
Silver35,00025
Gold65,00050
Platinum140,000100

Platinum will include some particularly interesting perks, including the ability to select any available seat—including Extra Legroom seats—at booking, board ahead of Gold members and Group 1, get up to three free checked bags, and enjoy unlimited Companion Pass trips.

Southwest also says additional Rapid Rewards improvements are coming, including more opportunities to use points beyond Southwest flights.

Essentially, Rapid Rewards looked in the mirror and said:

“New year. New tier. New me.”

What happens if you already earned status?

Good news for current members.

Travelers who earn A-List status for 2027 based on their 2026 activity will automatically transition to Silver, while those earning A-List Preferred will move to Gold beginning January 1. Existing Companion Pass benefits will also be honored according to their applicable expiration dates.

A colorful graphic featuring an earth globe, a travel bag, camera, clock, checklist, airplane, and cruise ship, with the text 'Travel Tip of the Day'.

💡 Travel Tip of the Day: Don’t Chase Status Without Doing the Math

The Southwest announcement gives us today’s perfect travel reminder:

Never assume next year’s loyalty-program rules will match this year’s.

Airlines can change qualification requirements, credit-card benefits, boarding perks, baggage allowances, and the number of points needed to reach a particular level.

Before spending extra money to chase airline status, ask yourself:

  • How many flights or qualifying points do I actually need?
  • Which benefits will I really use?
  • Does credit-card spending help me qualify?
  • How much extra spending will it take to reach the next tier?
  • What is the real dollar value of those benefits to me?

Because sometimes the goalposts move.

And if you’re spending $1,000 to chase a perk worth $200, that’s not loyalty.

That’s expensive math. 😂

🛳️ Cruise Family, What Do You Think?

Now I want to hear from you.

MSC cruisers: Would having Eataly aboard make you more interested in sailing MSC World Asia?

Caribbean cruisers: Is Dominica already on your must-visit list?

Delta flyers: Would Wagyu, premium wine, and upgraded onboard comforts convince you to splurge on Delta One?

Southwest travelers: What do you think about Silver, Gold, and Platinum? Do you like the new names and structure, or would you rather keep A-List and A-List Preferred?

Drop your thoughts in the comments.

Cruise News Roundup: Florida Mother Arrested After Cruise, 87 Crew Members Removed in Boston, Harmony of the Seas Pipe Bursts & Cruise Policies Get Pricier

Cruise News Roundup | Aired September 29, 2026| Episode 65

Crewmates, cruise addicts, sea mates, and saltwater souls — today’s Boarding Call covers two very serious stories, one unexpected onboard plumbing problem, and some cruise-policy changes that could hit your vacation budget harder than you expect.

A Florida mother is facing child-neglect charges after authorities allege four young children were left home alone while she went on a cruise. Federal authorities say an ongoing Boston operation has resulted in 87 foreign cruise crew members being removed. Harmony of the Seas had a burst pipe send warm water into a passenger corridor. And both Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean are changing pricing and cancellation rules.

And because it’s Cruise Day Tuesday, don’t forget to check the Cruise Therapy Facebook Group and Atlanta Travel Associates Business Page for current cruise promotions, vacation offers, and deals.

Grab your boarding pass, grab something from the bar, and let’s get into today’s cruise and travel news.

A graphic promoting 'Your Daily Boarding Call' by the Cruise Therapy Podcast Group, featuring a large cruise ship docked near a tropical island, with text highlights about cruise news and travel alerts.

Florida Mother Arrested After Returning From a Cruise

This first story is difficult.

A 29-year-old North Miami Beach mother is facing four counts of child neglect after police allege she left four young children home without adult supervision while she went on a cruise to the Bahamas.

A judge in a black robe speaks during a court proceeding, while a woman wearing an orange jumpsuit stands next to her looking serious.

Authorities identified the woman as Nathalie Belizaire. According to court documents cited in the episode, the children included a two-month-old infant, a two-year-old, and two other young children.

Police say the children were discovered on Saturday, September 26, after the infant’s father went to the home and found them without an adult present. He then called 911.

According to the arrest affidavit, he had previously seen a social-media post that appeared to show Belizaire purchasing a Carnival cruise ticket.

Belizaire allegedly told investigators she intended for the children’s great-grandmother to watch them, but authorities say no supervising adult was present when officers arrived. She was arrested after returning from the cruise.

It’s important to be precise here:

These are criminal allegations. Belizaire is entitled to the presumption of innocence, and the court system still has to resolve the charges. Cruise Family, we all understand wanting a break.

Sometimes you want three, four, or seven days where nobody asks you for anything.

But when young children are involved, their safety has to come first.

This is one best left with investigators and the courts.

Federal Operation in Boston Has Removed 87 Cruise Crew Members

Now to another serious story.

Federal authorities say an ongoing operation in Boston targeting child sexual abuse and exploitation material among cruise ship crew members has resulted in the removal of 87 foreign cruise crew members.

A person standing with their hands behind their back, wearing handcuffs.
Federal authorities say Operation Tidal Wave has resulted in the removal of 87 foreign cruise crew members during an ongoing Boston investigation. (Photo Credit: Crew Center)

The operation is called Operation Tidal Wave and involves:

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection
  • Homeland Security Investigations
  • Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force

CBP announced on September 25 that officers at the Port of Boston had removed 87 foreign cruise crew members during the ongoing investigation.

The latest publicly detailed enforcement action cited in the transcript occurred on September 20, when six Filipino crew members from Norwegian Breakaway were removed.

According to CBP, those six admitted during secondary interviews to previously possessing child sexual abuse or exploitation material.

In a separate but related Boston case, federal prosecutors also announced charges against Norwegian Jewel crew members accused of transporting child sexual abuse material.

That case remains pending in court.

Because these matters involve extremely serious allegations and ongoing federal investigations, it’s important not to go beyond what authorities have publicly stated.

The main takeaway is that the operation is ongoing, and Boston remains one of the ports where federal teams are actively screening crew members for this type of material.

A reported burst pipe aboard Harmony of the Seas sent warm water into a passenger corridor, while crew members responded to the affected area. (AI-Generated Image)

Harmony of the Seas Gets an Unexpected Indoor Water Feature

Now we can lighten things up a little.

Passengers aboard Harmony of the Seas reportedly got a surprise when a pipe burst onboard and warm water began pouring into a hallway.

The water flooded the corridor and reportedly affected several nearby cabins.

One passenger shared video online and said the water was so warm it was actually steaming up her phone.

Passengers reported that the crew responded quickly, the affected area was being handled, and there was no indication at the time that the ship’s overall itinerary had been disrupted.

Pipe failures can happen in:

  • Hotels
  • Houses
  • Office buildings
  • and yes, cruise ships

But Crewmates, if I open my cabin door and somebody says:

“Be careful. The carpet is 110 degrees.”

I’m turning right back around. 😂

Princess Plus and Premier Packages Are Getting More Expensive

Now let’s talk about something else getting hot:

A person relaxing on a cruise ship holds a tablet displaying pricing and features for Princess Plus and Princess Premier packages, with a view of the ocean in the background.
Princess Plus and Princess Premier will each increase by $5 per person, per day for qualifying sailings beginning October 13. (AI Generated Image)

Cruise prices.

Princess Cruises is changing both its Princess Plus and Princess Premier packages for sailings departing on or after October 13.

Both packages will increase by $5 per person, per day.

The new pre-cruise pricing will be:

  • Princess Plus: $65 → $70 per person, per day
  • Princess Premier: $100 → $105 per person, per day

And guests who wait until they are onboard will pay more.

Princess is also changing standalone Wi-Fi.

The current four-device standalone Wi-Fi option is going away, and a two-device option is being added instead.

Now $5 a day may not sound dramatic.

Until Linda and Leroy book a 14-night cruise for two people.

That “little” increase becomes:

$5 × 14 days × 2 people = $140 more.

Suddenly five dollars brought several friends. 😂

Royal Caribbean Is Changing Its Cancellation Penalties

Royal Caribbean is changing its cancellation penalty structure, including removing the 25% penalty tier for some sailings. (AI Generated Image)

Princess is not the only cruise line changing the fine print.

Royal Caribbean is updating its cancellation penalty schedule beginning October 11.

The cruise line says the goal is to simplify the policy.

Cruises will now be grouped into:

  • 1–4 nights
  • 5–9 nights
  • 10 nights or longer

One of the biggest changes affects cruises of five nights or longer.

Royal Caribbean is eliminating the old 25% cancellation penalty tier.

That means some guests who cancel inside the penalty window could move directly to losing 50% of the cruise fare.

For a 5–9 night cruise, canceling 89–61 days before sailing could mean a 50% penalty.

For cruises 10 nights or longer, that 50% penalty may begin as early as 119 days before departure.

This is why we read cancellation policies before we click Book Now.

Because:

“I changed my mind.”

can quickly turn into:

“I changed my mind…and apparently donated half my cruise fare.” 😂

Travel Tip of the Day: Write Down These Three Dates

Today’s Princess and Royal Caribbean stories give us the perfect travel tip.

Before you book a cruise — or add a package — write down three important dates:

  1. Your final payment date
  2. Your cancellation penalty date
  3. Any deadline for buying drink packages, Wi-Fi, insurance, or other extras at the lower pre-cruise price

Do not assume pricing and policies will stay the same forever.

Cruise lines regularly change:

  • package pricing
  • benefits
  • deposit requirements
  • cancellation windows
  • upgrade rules
  • pre-cruise discounts

And if you’re booking an expensive vacation far in advance, consider travel protection that fits your circumstances.

The best time to learn your cancellation policy is:

Before you need to cancel.

Not while you’re sitting on hold saying:

“Wait…HOW much am I losing?” 😳

Key Takeaways

Florida case: A North Miami Beach mother is facing child-neglect charges after authorities allege four young children were left without adult supervision while she cruised.

Boston operation: Federal authorities say Operation Tidal Wave has resulted in 87 foreign cruise crew members being removed during an ongoing investigation involving child sexual exploitation material.

Harmony of the Seas: A reported burst pipe sent warm water into a passenger hallway, but there was no indication at the time that the overall itinerary had been disrupted.

Princess Cruises: Plus and Premier packages are each increasing by $5 per person, per day for qualifying sailings.

Royal Caribbean: Cancellation penalties are changing, and some guests may now move directly into a 50% penalty window.

Travel Tip: Write down your final payment, cancellation-penalty, and pre-cruise purchase deadlines.

Cruise News Roundup: MSC Breaks Ground on Sandy Cay, Carnival Mourns a Beloved Captain, Brightline Restructures & Holiday Airfare Climbs

Cruise News Roundup | Aired September 28, 2026| Episode 64

Seamates and saltwater souls, today’s Boarding Call has a little bit of everything: a brand-new private island, a heartfelt farewell to a longtime Carnival captain, a financial restructuring that sounds scarier than it may actually be for travelers, and holiday airfare that may have your wallet asking for therapy.

So grab your boarding pass, grab something from the bar, and let’s get into today’s cruise and travel news.

🏝️ MSC Breaks Ground on Sandy Cay in the Bahamas

MSC Group officially broke ground on September 28 for a new private-island destination in the Bahamas called Sandy Cay.

The new island will sit next to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and is scheduled to open in 2028. But MSC says this will not simply be Ocean Cay 2.0.

Sandy Cay is being designed as a smaller, more intimate, elevated experience for guests sailing with MSC Cruises and its luxury sister brand, Explora Journeys.

Plans include:

  • five beaches
  • elevated dining
  • private retreats
  • wellness-focused areas
  • relaxation spaces
  • more personalized hospitality

In other words:

Ocean Cay said, “Come enjoy the beach.”

Sandy Cay said:

“Your cabana is ready.” 😂

MSC describes Sandy Cay as an intimate complement to Ocean Cay, not a replacement.

And MSC is not finished with Ocean Cay either.

The company is continuing upgrades there, including new restaurants, family and adults-only beach concepts, expanded relaxation areas, and additional marine conservation experiences.

So by 2028, MSC cruisers could have two very different private-island experiences sitting side by side.

My question is simple:

Which island has somebody bringing drinks directly to my chair?

Because that is where GFree will be. 🍹😂

Now we turn to a much more somber story.

The Carnival Cruise Line family is mourning the loss of longtime Captain Francesco “Cheecho” La Farina, who died on Saturday, September 26, following a long battle with cancer.

He was surrounded by family in his final hours.

Captain La Farina spent approximately 27 years with Carnival Cruise Line, serving as both staff captain and captain.

During his career, he commanded several Carnival ships, including Carnival Glory and Carnival Magic.

Since news of his passing became public, former crew members, colleagues, and cruisers have been sharing memories of him online.

What stands out in those tributes is not simply the ships he commanded or the ports he visited.

People have remembered his:

  • kindness
  • respect
  • humility
  • professionalism
  • steady leadership
  • genuine care for others

Carnival said he earned the respect and admiration of colleagues throughout the fleet through his professionalism, leadership, and kind nature.

Twenty-seven years at sea means thousands of voyages, countless guests, and generations of crew members who trusted his leadership.

Today, we send condolences to his family, friends, Carnival family, and everyone who had the opportunity to sail or serve alongside him.

Fair winds and following seas, Captain.

🚆 Brightline Files for Chapter 11 — But the Trains Are Still Running

Some Florida travelers saw the words:

“Brightline files for bankruptcy”

…and immediately started wondering whether their train reservation had just disappeared.

For now, no.

Brightline’s parent-level companies are going through a Chapter 11 financial restructuring, but the operating company running the Miami-to-Orlando passenger service is not part of the filing.

Brightline says train service will continue operating normally.

The restructuring is aimed at strengthening the company’s finances and balance sheet.

According to the transcript, Brightline has identified roughly $4.4 billion in debt, while existing investors have committed about $490 million in new financing to support the restructuring and provide liquidity.

Brightline also says it intends to continue pursuing future growth plans, including:

  • a future station near Cocoa Beach
  • expanded commuter access in South Florida
  • continued exploration of extending service from Orlando toward Tampa

That matters to cruisers because Brightline has become a popular transportation option for travelers moving between:

  • Orlando
  • Miami
  • Fort Lauderdale
  • South Florida cruise ports

So if you already bought your Brightline ticket from Orlando to Miami:

No need to start walking down I-95. 😂

The train is still running.

Chapter 11 can sound alarming, but it does not automatically mean a company is shutting down. It can allow a business to restructure debt while continuing operations.

For now:

Keep your reservation.

Keep monitoring updates.

And please stay off the railroad tracks. 😂

✈️ Holiday Airfare May Be Getting Even More Expensive

Now let’s head from the train station to the airport.

If airfare already feels expensive, the transcript brings some rough news.

Airfares in August 2026 were about 23.4% higher than they were during the same period the previous year.

And one airline pricing consultant cited in the episode expects fares could stay near current levels or potentially rise another 10% by the end of the year.

Why?

Several factors are hitting at once.

1. Jet Fuel Is Expensive

As of September 22, jet fuel averaged around $4.52 per gallon, more than a dollar higher than in early August.

2. Some Airlines Are Cutting Capacity

Fewer seats plus strong demand can give airlines more pricing power.

3. Travelers Are Still Traveling

American, Southwest, and United were cited as reporting continued strong demand even as ticket prices increased.

Basically, the airlines looked at us paying these prices and said:

“Oh, so y’all ARE still buying tickets.” 😂

Now, that does not mean every route is going up another 10%.

Airfare is highly route-specific.

Some markets will still have sales.

Some routes have stronger competition.

And some holiday fares may dip during certain booking windows.

But if you are traveling for:

  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas
  • New Year’s
  • another peak holiday period

…this may not be the year to wait until the night before and hope something opens up.

Something might open up.

A middle seat for $987. 😂

💡 Travel Tip of the Day: Start Tracking Holiday Airfare Now

If you know you are flying during the holidays:

Start tracking your airfare now.

Use:

  • price alerts
  • nearby airport comparisons
  • alternate travel dates
  • early-morning flights
  • late-night flights
  • airline miles
  • credit-card points

With cash fares elevated, points may offer better relative value on some routes.

And if you see a fare you are comfortable paying?

Book it.

Many U.S. airlines no longer charge traditional change fees on standard tickets, depending on the fare type.

Waiting forever for the absolute lowest fare can sometimes cost you more than locking in a reasonable price.

Travel planning is not always about finding the cheapest airfare ever recorded in human history.

Sometimes it is about finding a price you can live with before Linda or Leroy grabs the last seat. 😂

Brightline: Parent companies are restructuring under Chapter 11, but Miami-to-Orlando train service continues operating.

Airfare: Holiday flights may remain expensive as fuel costs, capacity decisions, and strong demand affect pricing.

Travel Tip: Track airfare now and book when you find a price that fits your budget rather than chasing the perfect fare indefinitely.

Cruise News Roundup: Nor’easter Disruptions Continue, Allure Offers a Possible “Free Cruise” Deal & Icon of the Seas Spends the Night in Miami

Cruise News Roundup | Aired September 25, 2026| Episode 63

Cruise Family, today’s Boarding Call has more weather drama, a Royal Caribbean offer that may have some cruisers checking their calendars twice, and an unexpected overnight stay in Miami for Icon of the Seas.

The same powerful nor’easter that disrupted sailings yesterday is still forcing changes from Canada down the East Coast. Some Allure of the Seas guests have received an offer that could essentially mean getting their cruise fare refunded. And passengers boarding Icon of the Seas are spending their first night somewhere they probably did not expect:

Miami.

Grab your boarding pass, grab a drink from the bar, and let’s get into today’s cruise and travel news.

🌧️ The Nor’easter Is Still Rearranging Cruise Schedules

This storm has officially taken over the cruise planner.

The nor’easter moving through the Northeast and Atlantic Canada region is forcing cruise lines to adjust departure times, routes, ports of call, and in at least one case, an entire itinerary.

For anyone wondering exactly what a nor’easter is, it’s a strong low-pressure system that develops along the East Coast of North America. These storms can bring strong winds, heavy rain, snow in colder months, coastal flooding, and rough seas.

And cruise ships really do not care whether the storm has a cute name.

Rough seas are rough seas.

Norwegian Escape Heads Back Early

Norwegian Escape left New York on September 19 for a seven-night Canada and New England cruise.

Norwegian shortened its time in Halifax, Nova Scotia, so the ship could get ahead of the worst weather and return to New York earlier.

Instead of arriving Saturday morning, the ship was expected to reach New York Friday evening, remain docked overnight, and allow guests to debark on schedule Saturday morning.

Carnival Venezia Feels the Storm Again

We talked about Carnival Venezia yesterday.

Carnival shortened the ship’s Bermuda visit and slowed the vessel on the return trip for a more comfortable ride.

That delayed its return to New York and also delayed embarkation for the next cruise, which in turn shortened that sailing’s Bermuda visit too.

This is exactly why the weather affecting the cruise before yours can suddenly become your problem.

Vision of the Seas Goes South

Then there is Vision of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean did not just tweak this itinerary.

They picked it up, turned it around, and sent it south.

Guests had booked a nine-night Canada and New England cruise from Baltimore and were expecting fall foliage.

Instead, the ship stayed overnight in Baltimore and departed at 3 p.m. the next day for:

  • Port Canaveral
  • Nassau
  • Grand Bahama Island

More ships sailing from New York, Boston, Baltimore, New Jersey, and Maine could still see changes depending on how the storm moves.

So if you are cruising from the Northeast this weekend:

Check your email.

Check your cruise-line app.

Check your text messages.

Because Mother Nature has apparently logged into the cruise planner. 😂

💰 Would You Move Your Cruise for a Refund?

Now let’s talk about an email I would very much like to receive.

Some guests booked aboard Allure of the Seas for September 27 received an offer from Royal Caribbean asking:

“How flexible are you?”

Allure is scheduled to sail from Fort Lauderdale on a six-night Western Caribbean itinerary visiting:

  • Perfect Day at CocoCay
  • Falmouth, Jamaica
  • Nassau

But select guests have been offered the option to move to the October 11 sailing instead.

Same ship.

Same itinerary.

Same ports.

Just two weeks later.

And here’s where it gets interesting.

Option 1: Move the Cruise

Guests who volunteer to move can receive a full refund of the cruise fare.

They would still pay taxes, fees, and add-ons on the new sailing, but Royal Caribbean would refund the actual cruise fare.

The cruise line would also reimburse certain non-refundable travel expenses such as flights and hotels.

Option 2: Cancel Completely

Guests could also cancel and receive a full refund of everything paid, including non-refundable deposits.

On top of that, they would receive a future cruise credit worth 100% of the cruise fare.

So yes.

You could potentially cancel, get your money back, and still have cruise credit to use later.

Royal Caribbean had not publicly stated exactly why the offers were being made. The episode notes that cruise lines have used similar incentives when sailings appear overbooked and volunteers are needed to change plans.

Now before everybody starts yelling:

“TAKE THE DEAL!”

Not everybody can.

People have:

  • work schedules
  • birthdays
  • anniversaries
  • babysitters
  • pet sitters
  • group travel plans
  • flights
  • hotels

Moving a vacation by two weeks may simply not be possible.

But if you are retired, working remotely, or your calendar says:

“I ain’t got nowhere to be…”

That offer could look very tempting. 😂

🛳️ Icon of the Seas Is Spending Its First Night in Miami

Guests boarding Icon of the Seas are getting a slightly unusual start to their vacation.

They are still boarding Saturday.

But the ship will remain overnight at PortMiami for scheduled maintenance.

Icon is now expected to depart at 4 p.m. Sunday, September 27.

Because of the delayed departure, the scheduled Costa Maya, Mexico, visit has been canceled.

Royal Caribbean says the rest of the seven-night itinerary is currently unaffected, and guests are receiving refundable onboard credit as compensation.

Picture it:

Everybody is standing at sailaway Saturday afternoon.

Drinks in hand.

Music playing.

Everybody yelling:

“BYE, MIAMI!”

And Miami answers:

“See you tomorrow!” 😂

The good news?

Guests are already aboard Icon of the Seas.

And if there is one ship where you could probably spend an extra day without going anywhere, it is Icon.

You still have:

  • pools
  • restaurants
  • bars
  • entertainment
  • AquaDome
  • Surfside
  • Central Park
  • Thrill Island

You could spend a week onboard and still end the trip asking:

“Wait…where was that?”

Of course, if Costa Maya was an important part of your vacation, losing that port is disappointing.

Royal Caribbean had not publicly detailed the exact maintenance work involved.

The key point is that the cruise is still sailing, the remaining itinerary is intact, and Icon is simply getting a little extra quality time with Miami first.

Colorful graphic featuring a globe, suitcase, camera, alarm clock, checklist, and travel icons, with the text 'Travel Tip of the Day'.

⚓ Travel Tip of the Day: Your Cruise Itinerary Is Not an Appointment Calendar

Today’s nor’easter and Icon stories give us one important reminder:

Never treat a cruise itinerary like a guaranteed appointment calendar.

Ports can change because of:

  • weather
  • maintenance
  • medical emergencies
  • port congestion
  • mechanical issues
  • operational needs

Before your cruise, avoid making tightly connected, expensive, non-refundable plans around a single port.

Keep cruise-line notifications turned on.

Download the cruise line’s app.

Watch your email.

Watch your text messages.

And if one particular port is the only reason you are taking the vacation, think carefully before making expensive non-refundable arrangements around it.

Because the cruise contract says:

“Itinerary subject to change.”

And Mother Nature?

She always reads the fine print. 😂

Nor’easter: Norwegian Escape, Carnival Venezia, Vision of the Seas, and potentially other Northeast sailings have seen route, timing, or port changes.

Allure of the Seas: Select passengers were offered incentives to voluntarily move or cancel their sailing.

Icon of the Seas: Guests will spend the first night in Miami while the ship undergoes scheduled maintenance.

Costa Maya: Icon’s scheduled stop has been canceled, while the rest of the itinerary remains intact.

Travel Tip: Treat every cruise itinerary as flexible and avoid tightly connected non-refundable plans.

Cruise News Roundup: Nor’easter Reroutes Cruises, Royal Caribbean Card-Counting Dispute, Half Moon Cay Gets a Beach Club & River Cruising Heats Up

Cruise News Roundup | Aired September 24, 2026| Episode 62

Cruise Family, today’s Boarding Call has weather drama, a casino dispute, a new VIP-style private-island experience, and even more competition coming to Europe’s rivers.

A powerful nor’easter is forcing itinerary changes for both Carnival and Royal Caribbean. One Royal Caribbean passenger is challenging a cruise ban tied to alleged card counting. Holland America is adding a new premium beach club at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay. And both Celebrity Cruises and Explora Journeys are making moves into river cruising.

Grab your boarding pass, grab something from the bar, and let’s get into today’s cruise and travel news.

A large cruise ship docked in a tropical location, with a clear blue sky and mountains in the background. The image features the title 'Your Daily Boarding Call' and mentions cruise news, travel alerts, destination trends, and industry updates.

🌧️ Nor’easter Says: “Your Itinerary? That’s Cute.”

Mother Nature is rearranging cruise vacations along the East Coast.

Carnival Venezia departed New York for a four-night Bermuda sailing, but rough conditions developing along the route home forced Carnival to make changes.

The ship arrived in Bermuda earlier than planned and also departed earlier on September 22, giving the captain more flexibility to take a safer and more comfortable route back to New York.

So if you packed that perfect overnight Bermuda outfit?

Back into the suitcase it goes.

But Carnival wasn’t the only cruise line adjusting plans.

Royal Caribbean took an even bigger detour.

Guests boarding Vision of the Seas in Baltimore expected a nine-night Canada and New England itinerary featuring Boston, Portland, Saint John, Halifax, fall foliage, sweaters, and maybe a little lobster.

Instead?

“How do you feel about Florida?” 😂

The sailing was rerouted south to:

  • Port Canaveral
  • Nassau
  • Grand Bahama Island

The ship also remained overnight in Baltimore and was scheduled to depart the following day after conditions improved. Royal Caribbean will refund guests for shore excursions booked for the original Canada and New England ports.

Imagine packing fall boots and a raincoat for New England…

…and suddenly somebody yells:

“Beach day!”

Who is helping me turn this cardigan into a cover-up?

The serious point, though, is that cruise ships can move when dangerous weather develops. That flexibility can mean shorter port calls, different destinations, or a complete itinerary change.

In this case:

Bermuda got shorter, and Canada became the Bahamas.

🎰 Royal Caribbean Passenger Challenges Casino-Related Cruise Ban

Now to a cruise casino story with a lot of moving parts.

An Australian passenger named Mark Timothy Grant is challenging Royal Caribbean after the cruise line canceled five complimentary cruises he says he earned through Casino Royale.

One of those cruises was scheduled aboard Quantum of the Seas from Brisbane in 2025.

According to the episode, Royal Caribbean contacted Grant three days before departure and told him the cruise was canceled.

Then all five of his complimentary sailings were canceled.

Grant still went to the terminal but was denied boarding.

Later, Royal Caribbean told a tribunal that its global security team had placed Grant on a no-sail list after reviewing his casino activity.

The cruise line alleged that he violated casino rules involving advantage play, including alleged card counting.

Grant disputes Royal Caribbean’s action and is seeking more than $22,000 Australian dollars in compensation for the canceled cruises.

His original case was dismissed over jurisdiction.

However, that decision was later overturned on appeal, allowing the underlying dispute to return to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

And this distinction matters:

The appeals ruling did not determine whether Grant counted cards.

It also did not decide whether Royal Caribbean had the right to ban him or whether compensation is owed.

Those questions remain unresolved.

So for now?

To be continued.

Or as GFree put it:

Casino Royale said know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em…

…and Royal Caribbean apparently added:

“Know when you’re not getting back onboard.” 😂

🏖️ Holland America Is Adding a New Beach Club at Half Moon Cay

Now let’s get off the ship and find a lounge chair.

Holland America has announced a new premium beach club at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay as part of upgrades ahead of the private island’s 30th anniversary in 2027.

Bookings for the new beach club are expected to open in early October.

A day pass is expected to include:

  • priority tendering
  • dedicated waiter service
  • all-inclusive alcoholic drinks
  • all-inclusive non-alcoholic drinks
  • beach accessories
  • specialty food and beverage options

And outside the premium beach club, Holland America is also making broader island improvements.

Those upgrades include:

  • a complimentary island food pavilion
  • a new barbecue menu
  • refreshed bars and restaurants
  • upgraded cabanas
  • more daybeds
  • more canopy loungers
  • additional beach chairs
  • four pickleball courts

Yes.

Pickleball.

Because apparently somebody looked at a beautiful private island in the Bahamas and said:

🚢 River Cruising Is Entering Its Main-Character Era

Ocean cruise lines are coming for the rivers.

Explora Journeys has announced plans to enter the European river cruise market.

According to the episode, Explora signed a letter of intent with Dutch shipbuilder Den Breejen Shipyard.

The company has not yet revealed:

  • what the ships will look like
  • how many ships are planned
  • exact launch dates
  • which European rivers will come first

But sales are expected to open in 2027.

That’s a big move for a cruise brand that only launched its first ocean ship in 2023.

And Explora isn’t alone.

Celebrity Cruises is already further along.

Its first river ship, Celebrity Compass, touched water for the first time on September 12 in the Netherlands.

The ship completed its first float-out in Rotterdam before traveling roughly 40 miles to another shipyard for the next phase of construction.

Celebrity Compass is scheduled to debut in August 2027 and sail the Rhine and Danube rivers.

Eventually, it will be joined by Celebrity Seeker.

So now we have Celebrity coming.

Explora coming.

And you already know everybody else is watching.

Why?

Because river cruising offers something different:

  • smaller ships
  • city-center docking
  • longer destination time
  • intimate itineraries
  • European scenery
  • and, most importantly…

European wine. 🍷😂

Somebody in a cruise-company boardroom is already saying:

“Build me a river ship.”

River cruising may officially be entering its main-character era.

🌦️ Travel Tip of the Day: Watch the Cruise Before Yours

Today’s weather stories give us an important travel-planning reminder.

If severe weather is developing around your cruise, don’t only monitor your sailing.

Watch the cruise immediately before yours too.

Why?

Because even if the weather is beautiful on your embarkation day, your ship may still arrive late after having to:

  • slow down
  • change course
  • wait for rough seas to improve
  • divert around a storm

That delay can affect:

  • embarkation
  • your first port
  • excursions
  • onboard scheduling
  • or even the entire itinerary.

Keep your cruise line’s app notifications turned on.

Check:

✅ email
✅ text messages
✅ app notifications
✅ itinerary updates

And please do not ignore a cruise-line message on embarkation morning.

Because Mother Nature does not care that you booked the 11:30 a.m. arrival appointment.

She did not read your boarding pass. 😂

Cruise News Roundup: Royal Caribbean Buys Into Sandals, Carnival Brings Back Full Muster Drills, Whittier Dock Destroyed & Baby Spiders Invade Cruise Parking

Cruise News Roundup | Aired September 23, 2026| Episode 61

Royal Caribbean Group is making a major move into the all-inclusive resort business through a partnership with Sandals and Beaches Resorts. Carnival is bringing back the traditional full in-person muster drill on five ships this weekend. A new $80 million cruise dock in Whittier, Alaska, has been declared a total loss after a major fire. And some Royal Caribbean cruisers returned from vacation in Galveston to discover that their cars had apparently become luxury condos for baby spiders.

Cruise Cousins…

Apparently Wednesday decided peace was optional.

Grab your boarding pass, grab something from the bar, and let’s get into today’s cruise and travel news.

🏝️ Royal Caribbean Makes a $3 Billion Move Into Sandals and Beaches

Royal Caribbean Group apparently looked at cruises, private islands, beach clubs, river cruises, and luxury ships and said:

“What else can we add to the vacation?”

The answer?

All-inclusive resorts.

According to the episode, Royal Caribbean Group and Sandals Resorts announced a new partnership in which Royal Caribbean will acquire a 50% stake in Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts for approximately $3 billion.

The deal values the overall Sandals and Beaches business at roughly $6 billion.

Sandals brings decades of experience operating adults-only all-inclusive Caribbean resorts.

Beaches brings its family-focused resort portfolio.

Royal Caribbean brings a very large cruise customer base.

Together, the companies plan to form a joint venture combining Royal Caribbean’s vacation platform with Sandals’ resort expertise. The transaction is expected to close in early 2027, assuming the necessary approvals are received.

And immediately, my travel-advisor brain starts asking questions.

Could we eventually see:

  • Cruise-and-stay vacation packages?
  • Royal Caribbean loyalty benefits at Sandals?
  • Pre-cruise Sandals stays?
  • Post-cruise Beaches vacations?
  • Combined promotions?
  • Resort-and-cruise loyalty opportunities?

None of those ideas were announced in the transcript, but they’re exactly the kind of possibilities this partnership naturally makes travelers wonder about.

Because Royal Caribbean apparently no longer wants just your sea days.

They want the beach chair too. 😂

🛟 Carnival Is Bringing Back the Old-School Muster Drill — On Five Ships

Longtime cruisers…

You remember.

Everybody went to their assigned muster station.

Everybody arrived at the same time.

You stood.

You waited.

Then you waited some more.

And eventually somebody would stroll in 15 minutes late holding a frozen drink like:

“Was I supposed to be somewhere?” 😂

Well, for passengers aboard five Carnival ships, that traditional in-person safety drill is coming back temporarily.

The affected sailings mentioned in the episode are:

  • Carnival Horizon — September 26
  • Carnival Panorama — September 26
  • Carnival Sunshine — September 27
  • Carnival Vista — September 27
  • Carnival Firenze — September 28

More than 18,000 guests are expected to participate.

But before Linda and Leroy start yelling:

“Carnival got rid of e-muster!”

No.

It did not.

These are periodic full safety drills that ships and crews must perform so emergency procedures can be demonstrated with actual passenger participation.

Carnival explained that ships periodically have to complete these drills to satisfy government requirements and international SOLAS — Safety of Life at Sea — standards.

During the drill, crew members will demonstrate life jackets, explain evacuation procedures, and sound the emergency signal:

Seven short blasts followed by one long blast.

Food and beverage service will also temporarily stop.

Cruise Cousins…

They turned off the bar.

That is how you know they are serious. 😂

The interruption is brief, but the information matters.

If an emergency ever does happen, those few minutes of paying attention could make a real difference.

🔥 Whittier’s New $80 Million Cruise Dock Declared a Total Loss

Now to a serious update from Alaska.

A major fire at the Whittier Alaska cruise terminal caused extensive damage to a dock that only began welcoming ships in late 2024.

The fire reportedly broke out near a tour vessel docked at the facility and burned for hours.

The blaze damaged both the dock and the tour boat Klondike Express.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Norwegian Jade was nearby when the fire occurred.

The ship moved safely away from the area and was not damaged.

Passengers scheduled to embark that day were redirected to Whittier’s other cruise terminal.

The damaged facility was part of an approximately $80 million development.

After assessing the damage, the Alaska State Fire Marshal’s Office determined that the dock itself was a total loss.

The cause remained under investigation at the time of the episode.

This matters because Whittier is an important embarkation and disembarkation point for Alaska cruises, particularly for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings brands.

The good news is that Whittier has another cruise facility available.

At the time of the episode, cruise lines had not announced widespread cancellations for 2027, but repairs, rebuilding, and future operating plans still needed to be determined.

If you’re booked on an Alaska sailing through Whittier in 2027?

Keep this story on your radar.

🕷️ Cruise Over. Vacation Over. Car Taken Over by Baby Spiders.

Cruise Cousins…

Imagine this.

You had a great cruise.

You ate.

You drank.

You relaxed.

You got off the ship in Galveston.

You found your luggage.

You walked back to your car.

And your car said:

“Welcome home. We have new tenants.”

Baby spiders.

And apparently…

A surprised couple stands in front of a car covered in numerous spiders, with palm trees and a cruise ship in the background.

A LOT of them.

According to the episode, two Royal Caribbean cruisers returned to a parking area near Cruise Terminal 10 at the Port of Galveston and discovered their vehicle covered in tiny spiders.

An Uber driver who helped the couple reportedly said several other cars had the same eight-legged surprise.

The couple reportedly took an Uber to Walmart, purchased pesticide, and returned before they felt comfortable driving the vehicle home.

Listen.

I can handle:

  • delayed flights
  • missing luggage
  • rain
  • bad excursions
  • somebody reclining their airplane seat directly into my soul

But if I open my car door and 300 spiders look back at me?

They own the car.

Call the insurance company.

Tell them:

“Total loss.” 😂

To be clear, the spiders were not aboard the Royal Caribbean ship and were not inside Royal Caribbean’s terminal.

This happened in a parking area.

The episode explains that September can be a prime period for baby spiders in Texas. Spiderlings can sometimes move through a process called ballooning, releasing silk strands that catch the wind and carry them through the air.

That sounds adorable.

Until the wind drops them on your Honda.

🚗 Travel Tip of the Day: Check Your Car Before Driving Away

Today’s spider story gives us one of the strangest Travel Tips of the Day we’ve ever had.

If you leave your vehicle at a cruise port for a week or longer:

Give it a quick inspection before jumping inside.

Check:

  • mirrors
  • door handles
  • windshield
  • wheel wells
  • tires
  • under the hood if something looks unusual

And this isn’t just about spiders.

While you’re away, you could potentially encounter:

  • ants
  • rodents
  • storm debris
  • water damage
  • flooding
  • insects
  • other unexpected surprises

If you see something that could bite, sting, or damage the vehicle, don’t start grabbing at it.

Ask parking staff for assistance or contact a pest-control professional if needed.

Apparently our old post-cruise checklist was:

✅ Passport
✅ Luggage
✅ Car keys

Now we have to add:

✅ Make sure the car does not have eight legs.

Cruise Therapy is evolving. 😂
