Cruise News Roundup: PortMiami Hits 10 Million, Carnival Panorama Tragedy, Oasis Medical Emergencies & Carnival’s First President’s Cruise

Cruise News Roundup | Aired September 21, 2026| Episode 60

Cruise Family, today’s Boarding Call has a record-breaking milestone in Miami, two serious stories that remind us why flexibility and compassion matter when we travel, and one Carnival event that had cruisers attacking the registration page like concert tickets had just gone on sale.

PortMiami has officially surpassed 10 million cruise passenger movements in a single fiscal year. A missing-person search aboard Carnival Panorama ended with heartbreaking confirmation that a guest had gone overboard. Oasis of the Seas diverted for two medical emergencies, delaying one sailing and changing the next. And Carnival Cruise Line opened registration for its first-ever President’s Cruise.

Grab your boarding pass, grab something from the bar, and let’s get into today’s cruise news.

🚢 PortMiami Says: “10 Million? Hold My Mojito!”

The so-called Cruise Capital of the World has another record to celebrate.

PortMiami officially recorded its 10 millionth cruise passenger movement of the 2026 fiscal year on September 14.

And before you ask…

What exactly is a “passenger movement”?

It refers to passengers either boarding or disembarking from a cruise ship.

Although, as GFree pointed out in the episode, maybe the cruise industry could have workshopped that phrase just a little longer. 😂

PortMiami reached the 10-million mark with more than two weeks remaining in its fiscal year, which runs through September 30. The previous fiscal year’s record was about 8.56 million passengers, meaning the port had already surpassed that level by nearly 17 percent when it reached the milestone.

Port officials attributed the growth to factors including:

  • more cruise ships
  • additional cruise-line offerings
  • new and expanded terminals
  • continued investment in port infrastructure

The day PortMiami crossed that milestone, ships in port included Virgin Voyages’ Resilient Lady, Norwegian Getaway, Carnival Sunshine, Carnival Conquest, MSC Seaside, and Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas.

At this rate, Miami doesn’t need another traffic lane.

It needs an air-traffic controller for rolling luggage.

And somewhere out there, somebody is still sitting in an Uber saying:

“We can SEE the ship. Why haven’t we moved?” 😂

💔 Carnival Panorama Search Ends in Tragedy

Now we turn to a much more difficult story.

A missing-person search aboard Carnival Panorama ended with confirmation that a male guest had gone overboard.

The incident occurred during the final full day of a seven-night Mexican Riviera cruise from Long Beach, California. The ship had departed Puerto Vallarta and was heading back toward California when announcements began asking for help locating a missing guest.

Later that afternoon, Carnival Panorama reversed course.

Guests were asked to return to their staterooms while crew members conducted a full ship-wide search and accounted for everyone aboard.

Carnival’s security team also reviewed onboard camera footage.

According to the episode, that footage ultimately confirmed that the guest had gone overboard.

U.S. and Mexican authorities were notified, and search-and-rescue responsibility was transferred to those agencies. No additional information about the guest or the circumstances surrounding the incident had been publicly released at the time covered in the episode.

Carnival said its care team was supporting the guest’s family and traveling companions.

There isn’t a joke for this one.

A family went on vacation together expecting memories, laughter, and time at sea.

Now they are dealing with something unimaginable.

Our thoughts remain with the guest’s loved ones, traveling companions, crew members, and everyone aboard affected by what happened.

🚑 Two Medical Emergencies Change Oasis of the Seas’ Schedule

Another serious situation unfolded aboard Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas.

The ship was sailing a seven-night Bahamas itinerary when medical staff determined that one guest needed urgent care ashore.

According to the captain’s announcement referenced in the episode, one of the patients was a critically ill seven-year-old child.

Oasis of the Seas reversed course and returned to Nassau, the nearest location where hospital care could be provided.

Then, while the ship was heading back, a second guest became critically ill.

Both guests were eventually taken ashore in Nassau for further medical treatment. Royal Caribbean did not disclose additional medical details, respecting the families’ privacy.

The emergency diversion had a domino effect on the ship’s schedule.

Instead of arriving at Cape Liberty in New Jersey around 6 a.m. on September 20, Oasis of the Seas arrived approximately eight hours late.

That delay pushed embarkation for the next sailing into the evening.

The next cruise also lost its scheduled Port Canaveral call on September 22.

Royal Caribbean refunded affected shore excursions and provided onboard credits to guests on the following sailing.

Nobody likes:

  • losing a port
  • boarding hours late
  • rearranging flights
  • changing transportation plans

But this is one of those situations where the answer has to be:

Take care of the people first.

If it were our child, parent, spouse, friend—or us—we would want that captain to turn the ship around too.

🎉 Carnival’s First President’s Cruise Sends Fans Racing Online

After two serious stories, we can use something lighter.

Apparently Carnival cruisers woke up and collectively said:

“MOVE! Get out the way—I need to REGISTER!” 😂

Carnival Cruise Line opened registration for its first-ever President’s Cruise at 10 a.m. Eastern.

The event is planned aboard Carnival Magic on the February 28, 2027 sailing.

The voyage is already tied to John Heald’s FFS No. 9 cruise, and the President’s Cruise activities are expected to feature Carnival President Christine Duffy, John Heald, and Carnival Chief Culinary Officer Emeril Lagasse.

Registration costs $40 per person, and guests must already be booked on the qualifying Carnival Magic sailing.

The fee includes access to things such as:

  • special parties
  • exclusive events
  • a commemorative lanyard
  • a gift
  • meet-and-greet opportunities

And apparently Carnival fans do not play around when there are parties, swag, John Heald, Christine Duffy, and Emeril involved.

So many guests reportedly tried to register when enrollment opened that some initially encountered delays and website issues.

Carnival cruisers treated that registration page like Beyoncé tickets. 😂

If you’re already booked on the February 28 sailing and want the full President’s Cruise experience, check your Carnival Cruise Manager for current registration information.

✈️ Travel Tip of the Day: Don’t Book That Flight Too Early

The Oasis of the Seas delay gives us an important reminder.

Your scheduled arrival time is not the same thing as your airport departure time.

Even on the final morning of a cruise, unexpected situations can occur:

  • medical emergencies
  • weather
  • mechanical issues
  • port congestion
  • customs delays
  • unexpected diversions

Whenever possible, leave a healthy buffer between the ship’s scheduled arrival and your flight home.

If the itinerary says:

“Ship arrives at 6:00 a.m.”

that does not necessarily mean:

“You’ll be at the airport gate by 7:45.”

The ship still has to:

  1. reach the pier
  2. dock
  3. clear the appropriate authorities
  4. begin luggage operations
  5. disembark thousands of passengers
  6. get you through transportation and airport security

Give yourself room.

Because running through the airport dragging a suitcase behind you is not the cardio program Cruise Therapy recommends. 😂

Cruise News Roundup: Royal Beach Club Cancellations, Carnival Platinum Perks Cut, TSA Goes Gateside & Philadelphia Welcomes LGBTQ Travelers

Cruise News Roundup | September 4, 2026 | Episode 53

Ahoy there, Crewmates, Funnel Heads, Cruise Addicts, and Cruise Lovers! 🚢✈️🌴

Today’s Your Daily Boarding Call is serving up cruise perks, airport changes, destination news, and one very important reminder about keeping receipts.

Royal Caribbean is canceling some Royal Beach Club Paradise Island passes because a charter group booked the entire club. Carnival’s brand-new Rewards program is already running into capacity issues with some Platinum benefits. TSA is testing a way for certain non-ticketed visitors to go through security. And Philadelphia is getting attention as a welcoming destination for LGBTQ travelers.

So grab your boarding pass and your favorite drink from the bar.

It’s time to get into the headlines.

This article is adapted from the original Cruise Therapy Podcast transcript for Friday, September 4, 2026.

Royal Caribbean Cancels Beach Club Passes for a Private Charter

Imagine this.

You’re sailing to Nassau. You’ve visited before, so this time you decide to try something different.

You book a Royal Beach Club Paradise Island day pass.

You pay for it.

You already have the beach outfit planned.

You’re mentally holding a Coco Loco.

Then Royal Caribbean sends you a message that basically says:

“About that reservation…”

Guests scheduled to visit Nassau on January 23, 2027 are being told that their Royal Beach Club passes are being canceled because a charter sailing has reserved the entire beach club for the day.

There is no additional capacity.

The Good News: You Get a Refund

Royal Caribbean says affected guests will receive a full refund to their original payment method.

That helps.

But if the beach club was the main reason you were excited about Nassau?

Your plans just changed.

Three Royal Caribbean ships are scheduled to be in Nassau that day:

  • Allure of the Seas
  • Brilliance of the Seas
  • Utopia of the Seas

According to the episode, Allure of the Seas is carrying the charter group that booked the full beach club.

I understand both sides.

The charter group paid for exclusivity.

The other cruisers also paid and thought their plans were confirmed.

And somewhere somebody is staring at a matching beach hat, asking:

“So I packed this for nothing?”

If you’re affected, do not wait too long to make a Plan B.

Popular Nassau excursions can fill quickly.

Carnival Platinum Cruisers Are Already Losing Some Priority Perks

Carnival Rewards officially launched on September 1.

And just a few days later…

Some Platinum cruisers are already getting emails saying:

“We need to talk.”

Guests sailing aboard Carnival Sunshine and Carnival Vista on September 5 were notified that several Platinum benefits would not be available as usual.

Why?

Carnival says there are simply too many Platinum guests onboard those sailings.

Which Benefits Are Affected?

According to the episode, impacted perks include:

  • Priority embarkation
  • Priority debarkation
  • Priority access at cruise ports
  • Early stateroom access for luggage drop-off
  • Priority luggage delivery
  • Priority Guest Services access in some situations

Carnival introduced its new Rewards system partly because so many cruisers had reached upper loyalty tiers that delivering all the associated benefits had become increasingly difficult.

And now here we are.

September 1.

September 5.

That honeymoon ended quickly.

Status and Operational Benefits Are Not the Same Thing

Guests who transitioned from the old VIFP program and opted into Carnival Rewards can keep their loyalty status through December 2028.

But having the status does not necessarily guarantee that every operational perk can be delivered on every sailing.

That is an important distinction.

A benefit may be listed.

Capacity can still affect how it is delivered.

And Funnel Heads, we already know:

Nothing gets a Platinum cruiser worked up faster than the phrase:

“Priority unavailable.”

That is basically maritime fighting language.

Kidding.

Mostly.

Some Carnival Platinum perks may be limited on sailings with especially high numbers of upper-tier loyalty members. (AI-Generated Image)

TSA Is Letting Some Non-Flyers Go Through Security

Now let’s leave the cruise terminal and head to the airport.

TSA has rolled out a program called Gateside by TSA PreCheck.

It allows certain eligible people to request access through airport security even when they are not flying anywhere.

Yes.

We have come full circle.

Why Would Someone Want Airport Access Without a Ticket?

There are plenty of reasons.

You might want to:

  • Walk a family member to the gate
  • Meet someone during a long layover
  • Greet an arriving traveler
  • Accompany an unaccompanied minor
  • Spend extra time with a loved one before departure
  • Access restaurants or amenities beyond security

The program is currently available at a limited number of airports.

The transcript references airports including:

  • Dallas/Fort Worth
  • Los Angeles
  • Las Vegas
  • San Diego
  • Salt Lake City
  • Detroit
  • Indianapolis
  • Columbus

and several others.

Who Can Apply?

According to the episode, you generally need to be:

  • An active TSA PreCheck member
  • Or enrolled in another qualifying trusted-traveler program with a Known Traveler Number

You must request your visitor pass one to three days in advance.

Approval depends on the airport’s available visitor capacity.

There is no additional fee for the pass itself.

Those of us old enough to remember airport travel before modern security restrictions know this used to be normal.

You could walk somebody to the gate.

Watch the plane leave.

Wave dramatically through the window.

Cry.

Then go eat.

Now we are getting a little bit of that experience back.

With paperwork, of course.

Gateside by TSA PreCheck lets some eligible visitors access secure airport areas without a plane ticket. (AI Generated Image)

Philadelphia Is Putting Out the Welcome Mat for LGBTQ Travelers

Philadelphia is also getting attention as a destination where LGBTQ travelers may find history, community, nightlife, food, and welcoming spaces.

The city’s roughly 25-block Gayborhood near Center City includes:

  • LGBTQ-owned restaurants
  • Bars
  • Shops
  • Nightlife
  • Community spaces

The area is also home to the recently opened Philly Pride Visitor Center.

Philadelphia Has Deep LGBTQ History

Philadelphia has longstanding ties to LGBTQ civil-rights history.

The episode notes that the city was connected to early organizing efforts that helped contribute to the first national march on Washington for LGBTQ rights in 1979.

Philadelphia is also home to Giovanni’s Room, which opened in 1973 and is widely recognized as the country’s longest-running LGBTQ bookstore.

But the bigger point here goes beyond one destination.

Travelers are not only asking:

“What can I do there?”

They are increasingly asking:

“Will I feel comfortable there?”

And destinations are recognizing that feeling welcome matters.

So whether you are traveling for:

  • History
  • Food
  • Museums
  • Nightlife
  • Culture
  • Community

Philadelphia has entered the chat.

And then somebody mentioned deep-fried bread pudding French toast.

Listen.

You had me at bread pudding.

Those are four words I trust.

Philadelphia is drawing attention as a welcoming destination with LGBTQ history, culture, nightlife, dining, and community spaces. (AI-Generated Image)

🌴 Travel Tip of the Day: Screenshot Everything You Pre-Purchase

Today’s Royal Caribbean and Carnival stories give us a practical reminder:

If you pre-purchase something that really matters to your vacation, save the proof.

That includes:

  • Shore excursions
  • Beach club passes
  • Specialty dining
  • Spa reservations
  • Loyalty benefits
  • Premium seating
  • Transfers
  • Other paid experiences

Take a screenshot.

Save the confirmation email.

Keep the refund and cancellation terms.

If the reservation gets canceled, check the refund immediately.

Then start looking for alternatives before everybody else does.

Because a refund is great.

But a refund does not magically create another beach chair.

Sometimes Plan B turns out to be better than Plan A.

Especially when you make Plan B before everyone else.

⚓ Key Takeaways

  • Some Royal Beach Club Paradise Island passes for January 23, 2027 are being canceled because a private charter reserved the whole venue.
  • Affected guests should receive full refunds.
  • Popular replacement excursions in Nassau may fill quickly.
  • Some Platinum benefits on Carnival Sunshine and Carnival Vista may be limited because of unusually high numbers of Platinum guests onboard.
  • Carnival loyalty status can remain intact even when specific operational perks cannot be delivered.
  • Gateside by TSA PreCheck allows some eligible non-ticketed visitors to access secure airport areas.
  • Visitor approval depends on enrollment, advance application, and airport capacity.
  • Philadelphia continues to promote its LGBTQ history, Gayborhood, businesses, nightlife, and community spaces.
  • Travelers should save confirmations and refund terms for important pre-purchased vacation experiences.
  • When a reservation is canceled, act quickly on alternatives.

Cruise News Roundup: Premium Theater Seats, Shore Power and a $100 Million Miami Makeover

Cruise and travel news is serving extra onboard charges, a serious crew-member investigation, sustainability milestones, community projects, and a glamorous new pre-cruise hotel option in Miami.

In this edition of Your Daily Boarding Call, we are unpacking the biggest headlines without charging an overweight baggage fee—or asking you to save an entire theater row with one cardigan sweater.

Grab your coffee or cocktail, your passport, and your emotional-support luggage. Let’s get caught up.

Would You Pay Extra for a Better Theater Seat?

TUI Cruises is testing paid reservations for select seats inside the three-story theater aboard Mein Schiff Relax.

Guests can reportedly pay approximately $17 per person to reserve certain prime seats, while the rest of the theater remains available without an additional charge.

Seventeen dollars for a theater seat aboard a cruise ship?

For that price, the performers need to sing directly to me like I am sitting in the VIP section at an Usher concert.

Cruise lines already charge extra for specialty dining, spa treatments, premium attractions, and certain onboard activities. Theater seating, however, has traditionally been available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The test raises an important question: Is reserved seating a useful convenience, or is it another onboard charge trying to climb into your wallet?

Before Paying for Premium Seating

Find out exactly what the fee includes:

  • A specific seat
  • A preferred section
  • Early theater entry
  • Access to a separate line
  • A guaranteed reservation
  • Refunds if the showtime changes
  • Cancellation terms

Also consider whether arriving early could give you a perfectly good included seat.

Sometimes premium means a better view. Sometimes it means paying $17 to sit three rows closer to the same person, who is holding a phone above their head.

Authorities Investigate an Alleged Poisoning Involving a Disney Dream Crew Member

Spanish authorities are investigating an alleged poisoning involving a crew member from Disney Dream.

Public information remains limited, and it is important not to speculate while investigators gather evidence.

Our thoughts are with the crew member, their family, and the shipboard community.

Cruise-ship employees spend months away from home caring for passengers. Any serious incident involving a crew member deserves careful and compassionate coverage.

This is not the time for internet detectives to grab a magnifying glass and begin filming CSI: Lido Deck.

Travelers should rely on confirmed information from law enforcement, the cruise line, and other official sources rather than rumors circulating online.

Royal Palm South Beach Reopens After a $100 Million Renovation

The Royal Palm South Beach has reopened following a reported $100 million renovation.

One hundred million dollars?

That is not a makeover. That hotel changed its identity and came back with new cheekbones.

The refreshed property gives travelers another upscale option for a pre- or post-cruise stay near:

  • Miami Beach
  • Restaurants
  • Nightlife
  • Shopping
  • PortMiami
  • South Florida attractions

Staying in Miami before a cruise can help travelers avoid the stress of same-day flight disruptions.

Why Arriving Early Matters

Travelers flying to South Florida should consider arriving at least one or two days before sailing.

An extra hotel night can provide protection against:

  • Flight delays
  • Cancellations
  • Missed connections
  • Lost luggage
  • Severe weather
  • Transportation problems

It also allows the vacation to begin without sprinting through the terminal like a contestant on The Amazing Race.

Just remember: South Beach may be glamorous, but your embarkation alarm still needs to be set.

Do not let a late-night mojito make you miss your morning cruise.

Travel Tip of the Day: Know What Premium Fees Actually Include

Before purchasing premium seating or another paid onboard experience, confirm exactly what the fee guarantees.

Ask:

  • Am I reserving a specific seat?
  • Is the fee only for a preferred section?
  • Does it include early entry?
  • Is the reservation transferable?
  • Can the showtime change?
  • Is the purchase refundable?
  • What happens if the performance is canceled?

Take a screenshot of the reservation, purchase terms, and cancellation policy.

Cruise-line apps and onboard schedules can change, so keeping documentation may help if a disagreement arises later.

Before paying extra, ask whether arriving early would give you a good included option.

Premium can mean better access—but it should also provide clear value.

Key Takeaways

  • TUI Cruises is testing paid reservations for select prime theater seats aboard Mein Schiff Relax.
  • Travelers should confirm exactly what a premium-seat fee includes before purchasing.
  • Spanish authorities are investigating an alleged poisoning involving a Disney Dream crew member.
  • Princess Cruises is celebrating 25 years of using shore power in Juneau.
  • Shore power can reduce emissions and engine noise while ships are docked.
  • Disney Cruise Line helped upgrade a school courtyard and basketball court in Nassau.
  • The Royal Palm South Beach has reopened following a $100 million renovation.
  • Arriving in Miami one or two days before a cruise can reduce travel-day stress.
  • Travelers should save screenshots of paid onboard reservations and cancellation terms.
